Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome back for term 4, the final leg of the year! It’s been wonderful to see
everyone back again and raring to go!
What a term it is shaping up to be. This week being Field Days has been quite
frantically busy for us all with long days and late nights. I’m sure we will all be
grateful when things return to normal next week.
Yesterday, we went for a walk along the Campaspe River as part of our Inquiry
into Water. Aside from being plagued by mosquitoes, it was a lovely walk in the
sun and we were amazed to see just how high the water level of the Campaspe
was.
Next Monday, we are hoping for great weather so we can finally head off to
Yalooka Farm! I would strongly recommend that students pack a pair of
gumboots to change into whilst we are there, as it could still be quite muddy. If
the weather is wet and rainy we will cancel again and I will inform parents via
text message.
On Tuesday we will be heading out to the Field Days site and meeting up with
students from OLSH to help with the final tidying up. Please make sure your
permission form has been returned.

Tiddaliks
Literacy- We haven't had a slow start in the Tiddalicks, it has been straight back to business! Our spelling focus this week has been looking at spelling rules when we add the suffix -ing and our phonological awareness focus was syllables. Grace (our speech therapist) taught us that syllables are the beats in a word and she showed us some fun activities to help us improve our syllabification. Our grammar focus this week has been learning about imperative verbs (or bossy verbs) and we decided that Miss T is really good at these. It includes words like sit, stand, mix, stir and fold. The reason why we are learning about imperative verbs is because we have started a new writing genre, procedural texts. Procedural texts give us instructions on how to do something. A recipe is a great example of a procedural text, another example is the instructions you find when you play a board game. My favourite example is the Ikea furniture directions, always so successful! Maths has been busy too! We have been learning how to write numbers in numeral and word form. We have learnt a few tricks and cheats to make it easier (Benjamin helped us out a lot with this). We have also had a little refresher course on 2D shapes but we have been focusing on trickier shapes such as a pentagon, parallelogram, trapezium, heptagon, dodecagon, octagon and hexagon. We also touched on symmetry and the children made beautiful 'Symme-trees' to show their learning. I will put them on display soon. I know you all must be exhausted after your huge week at the Field Days! Thank you for all your time and effort, it is greatly appreciated. Have a well-deserved rest over the weekend! Jess

Welcome back to term four everyone!
It’s been a very busy start to our term already. Our students have arrived back to school excited to see one another and
eager to learn which has been very pleasing to see.
Last term our students submitted some wonderful hats to the Field Days for the ever popular Ag Hat Competition. We had
very creative and unusual hat designs produced by our students, and as a result we had some great school achievements!
Summer Richardson was awarded first prize in the grade 3 & 4 category for her wonderful hat titled ‘Holden Together’. Zara
Ciise also received an encouragement award for her creative design which caught the eye of many judges. The feedback
that I received noted that all our student entries were of very high creativity and ingenuity. Unfortunately the judges were
not able to award everyone with a prize based on the amount of entries from all the schools involved. Well done to all our
students on their fantastic designs.
Students have been focusing on developing their knowledge of a range of two and three dimensional shapes and their
features. Pentagon, Hexagon, Octagon, Rhombus and Cuboid are just some of the shapes students have been identifying
and analysing.
In literacy, students have been working on developing their understanding of instructional texts and the features of this
writing process. We have discussed where we may find instructions and the reason why clear and easy to follow
instructions are beneficial for our understanding. Lego has been used as an example, but please feel free to provide
students with other examples at home, as instructions are found everywhere in our world!
This week we have also begun our inquiry topic for the term on Waterways. Students have been looking at a range of ways
that water is collected, stored and used in both natural and unnatural environments. Flora and Fauna have been two
specific words that the students have been learning about through this topic, feel free to test their understanding so far!
Have a great weekend,
Sam

There is a saying "If you can teach it, you
know it" and Benjamin you definitely
proved that saying correct. Thank you for
sharing your learning and tricks of the
trade with us this week. You are a star!
Literacy Award
Riley Taylor for your wonderful listening and insightful response to questions during our guided reading sessions. Well done Riley on your fantastic attention to detail during the river kids documentary.

Thank you
Our huge community of volunteers for Field Days amaze me every year, but this year we had
particularly trying circumstances to deal with thanks to the weather. Regardless, we had
parents and family members out there every day, teachers and parents out there after school
in the rain and hail, all sloshing around in the mud, volunteering their time purely for the
benefit of our students. The money raised through Field Days plays a major role in our budget
and usually covers our laptop lease for the whole year. Without it, we would genuinely
struggle to afford them. What an amazingly generous community we have at Elmore Primary
School.
