irstly, don't buy on-line! Go to a

shop where you can get good

advice and try a few guitars

before making a choice.

Even if you've never played guitar

before, it is important that you

buy an instrument that will help

you to learn and not cause

you to give up. A poor guitar is

hard to play and will discourage

you, however young or old you are.

Choose a guitar that is comfortable

to hold - some are smaller than others -

and has strings that are easy to hold down.

Once you have decided on the model for comfort,

you might find there are different colours available,

so it's great to pick one you like the look of.

Electric or acoustic? It's up to you! Both styles of guitar

will get you started though it's true to say that electric

guitars are a bit easier on the finger tips. Think about

the type of music you want to

play. If it's folk or country music

influenced, you should probably

go for an acoustic guitar. If it's heavy

rock, then get an electric guitar and an

amplifier. You can always add the other type later!

And the cost? Well, you can spend as little or

as much as you like, but, like everything, you get

what you pay for so buy the best you can afford.

Reasonable quality acoustic guitars start at around

100 and you don't need to spend more than

300 to get an electric guitar and amplifier.

Finally, go to a reputable shop where you will

get good, impartial advice so you end up with

the best instrument for your needs and budget.
