First , is to be aware of where your family is within the deployment cycle. The first two months of a deployment are the hardest compared to a family who have been separated for 6 or 8 months. Whatever phase your family is experiencing it will help to take the holiday season one day at a time rather than as a full season. Try to break the holiday season into days, such as Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Years Eve Day and New Years rather than the entire holiday season as a whole. Avoid overspending and impulse buying in order to compensate for the absence of a family mem- ber. More gifts are not going to alleviate the family’s feelings of sadness and loss or lessen how much the service member is missed. In addition, the extra spending can lead to high credit card bills and financial stressors. Consider economical gifts such as dollar store items, homemade baked goods, and framed photos. Try a gift exchange with family members. Rules for gift exchanges include two family members that exchange, a wish list and an agreed upon cost limit. Another way to help reduce the holiday blues is to not overeat. Food is a big part of holidays and it is easy to over eat. One tip to reduce over eating is to put all food on a plate and sit down to eat it. Don’t stand and pick up items that you will pop in your mouth. The one plate and one serving rule will reduce overeating. Limit yourself with alcohol consumption. Alcohol is a depressant, which can disrupt your thoughts, feelings and actions. Alcohol makes you feel good in the moment but the next day you may feel sadder due the affects of alcohol on the body and mind. Exercise is very important for physical and emotional health. Try to exercise every day. Go for daily walks, take classes at the gym, bike around the block, go for a hike, lift weights, and march in place in front of the TV. There are many websites you can find that provide a quick efficient exercise routine in the comfort of your home. Finally be aware that the feelings of sadness and loss during a holiday when your loved one is de- ployed are normal. Allow your close family, friends and military programs help you during the deployment. The Mobilization and Deployment Program offers many benefits that can help ease the stress for military families with a deployed family member. Also if you have young children consider home visits with the New Parent Support Program. If you need a confidential ear, seek counseling through your Military and Family Life Counselor (MFLC) or talk with your physician to determine other options. Try these steps and hopefully they will ease some of the sadness due to the absence of your loved one. Sadness and feeling blue are normal and they come and go as our life circumstances change. Depression lasts longer and affects a person’s quality of life. Seek immediate help from your doc- tor or emergency room if you have thoughts of hurting yourself or others. http://www.army.mil/ article/116294/Beat_the_holiday_blues/
