FRIENDS OF AMUNDSEN HIGH SCHOOL PROPOSAL
Mission Statement:
The mission of the Friends of Amundsen High School (FAHS) group will be to encourage more of the students who live within the school boundaries to aJend AHS. This will be accomplished by publicizing the achievements and acNviNes currently in place at AHS and by encouraging the development of improved academic success and programs which will support it.
Short Term Goals:
1) Recruit interested community members and parents of current and potenNal students.
2) Establish a partnership with AHS and all appropriate related groups including the administraNon, LSC, Parent Advisory CommiJee and alumni organizaNon.
3) Heighten the local community’s awareness of posiNve programs currently in place at AHS via public relaNons, social media, and direct communicaNon with the aldermen’s offices and the local elementary schools, public and private. Topics to be highlighted may include the following:
a) IB Program
b) Service Learning Programs (orphanage in Mexico and annual trip, volunteering at local food bank, work with senior ciNzens, the “Build on” program in Nicaragua
c) Theater group
d) AthleNcs
e) Academic success (City Science Fair winners, Posse scholarship recipients, etc.)
4) Explore fundraising opportuniNes which can support the school’s academic growth.
5) Analyze low community enrollment factors and suggest ways to raise these numbers. This may include the following:
a) StaNsNcal break out of census and scoring informaNon
b) RecommendaNons of programming changes to aJract more high achieving students
Long Term Goals:
1) For FAHS to become sustainable community group capable of providing support to the school for many years to come.
2) To help raise the community profile and academic success of the school to a level which encourages many more high achieving local 8th graders to aJend Amundsen High School instead of private or selecNve enrollment schools.
