The Role of a Noun in the Sentence

While we have talked about “classifications” of nouns (common, proper, collective, etc.) we also need to talk about a nouns FUNCTION in the sentence.

-Function means how a noun can be used in the sentence

The Role of a Noun in the Sentence

A NOUN can be any of the following “pieces” of a sentence:

Subject- The person, place, thing, or idea a whole sentence is about.

Direct Object- The person, place, thing or idea that receives the action from the verb (an action verb)

Object of the Preposition- The person, place, thing, or idea that comes at the end of a prepositional phrase

Predicate Noun (nominative)- A word that is found in the “predicate” portion of the sentence and renames the noun.
