Im hungry! Putting this pizza issue together took a lot of self control to not eat all of the pizzas. We

went out and found some of the most unique pizza pies in the area and wanted to highlight them. The biggest challege was choosing which ones. There are so many great places to grab a slice and I hope next time we run a pizza issue we can include more. As for the rest of the content,

I am extemely proud of how it all turned out, especially with the extra work our other two publications made for us this month. You might not know this but we also publish Stride Magazine and Bison Illustrated. Oh yeah, next month we add the Design and Living Magazine to the mix. Between the four publications, I am confident to say that we will be making a substantial impact on the

communities we live in. And I will tell you, our mission has always been to put out high quality magazines that actually provide the area with opportunities of happiness. Back to this issue though. Check out our interview with Karen Stoker (owner of the Hotel Donaldson.) She provides this community with so much and it was a privilege to have her in our magazine. On top of that

>> What is Rhyme or Reason all about?Koth: We’re about rocking dude! (Laughs) We like to think that with our shows, each song is a freight train and every song is an engine. There’s no dead weight. If a song doesn’t work, we dump it. Rock and country are our two main genres, but we’ll try any genre if we think it’ll work.

What’s your favorite part? The recording, performing or writing?Svenby: For me it’s the live performance. That’s what makes the less entertaining parts bearable.Koth: The studio stuff can definitely be a pain. It’s like labor pains though. You know you’re giving birth to something, so it’s worth it in the end.

>> Why do you write originals instead of strictly being a cover band?Koth: We know that the market up here is

that if you want to make any money and attract crowds you play what people know and want to hear. It all comes from within though.Jelleberg: It’s like a creative outlet for all of us.

>> Talk about making the new music video and some of the challenges with that.Koth: It was fun. I’ve gotten into photography and videography, so I had a really good DSLR

and I thought, “What the hell?” The only reason we did it was because it was fun and for a promo for the new album.Svenby: It’s cool promotion for the band to take advantage of Youtube and Facebook. Josh does a lot of 2-3 minute clips of studio or live performances. It’s so cool to have that out there so people can see what’s going on.

>> So what’s next for Rhyme or Reason?Koth: Summer is our busy season so we’re try-ing to play as many shows as possible… We try to bring the fun each time we perform.

>> So you’re energetic performers?Koth: We come from the school of Arena Rock. We don’t stare at our shoes. We try to interact and rock out as much as possible.Svenby: Making it a show is a big part of what we do. From how our stage looks to the song list and how the show flows from song to song. We’re all about the performance.

>> Spotlight: Best concert story?Jelleberg: Last year a big storm came through so we tarped everything up and waited it out so the crowd had time to get a little tipsy. After-ward we’re waiting to play and we see this kid running down the street full-bore. He stumbles, falls and gets back up and takes off running. I see him smoke the side of the truck, the side that I can’t see. So Brad goes over and says, “Holy, there’s a big dent in your truck.” I think he’s joking so I go over there and there’s this great big dent about the size of a basketball from his head in the side of my truck.

As the owner of the Hotel Donaldson she is involved with fundraising events that support breast and prostate cancer, is dedicated to providing first class dining, drinks and living and is devoted to bringing Fargo together. Whatever she does she commits herself 100 percent. This month she committed to sitting down with FM Spotlight in one of her first class hotel rooms.

You’ve done so much already, what more would you like to accomplish in your life?Stoker: I love to travel and I love travel with adventure and purpose, so Andy (friend) and I have traveled quite a bit around the world to some obscure places, so we’d love to go and help. I think if I would have known what the Peace Corps was in high school I would have done that. I’m glad it worked out the way it did, I have no regrets. I’ll probably be doing grown up Peace Corps when my kids are out of school. The world gets a lot smaller very quickly when we think outside of ourselves. I have a friend who has been building schools in Af-ghanistan and Pakistan for the last 15 years and he was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. He’s a wonderful human being and I agree with his philosophy that if the world can read, our other problems will be taken care of. It’s the old seven-generation thing but once the world is literate, just think about the changes that can come.

What does Fargo mean to you?Stoker: Since I’ve lived here a lot longer than where I lived where I grew up, Fargo really is home. You don’t choose where you grow up as a kid but I chose to be here. I choose to be here because it is a great place to be. We’re a small enough community where we can make a difference. It’s big enough with the universities and all the great things we get to experience, whether it’s food, entertainment, low crime, more bike paths... it’s all of those wonderful things. We’re a small enough community, small enough state, we only have 680,000 people in the state, that’s the size of Lexington, KY. You can make a difference, whether it’s something as simple as volunteering or starting a new venture. Eighty percent of life is showing up. If you show up in a town our size you can really make a difference.

Describe your philosophy with the HoDo.Stoker: We opened nine years ago. I’ve always called it a “come as you feel” kind of a place not a come as you are. It really depends on the mood you’re in. With being a small community, we have over 70 regional artists represented, our list of purveyors is really long, musicians, writers and the people that work here, just about everyone in the area knows someone that has a con-nection here. We work very hard on our mission to create memorable experiences. We do our best to make people proud of the fact that we’re from here.

Why did you decide to open a fine-dining restaurant and hotel in the heart of downtown Fargo? Stoker: It was part of my mid life awakening... I like awakening more than crisis. (Laughs) I’d had a wonderful “first half”. I didn’t want a crisis to take some time to stop and figure out how to be smart enough to be happy. I wanted to create memorable experiences in and with the community that has been such a wonderful place for me and my family. I’ve loved downtown since I was a kid. Fargo was the big city we came to get back-to-school clothes. I hoped to make something the community could be a part of and enjoy. I wanted to create one of the best places to “play” and celebrate our community: our art, music, food, mattresses and more are from here. It’s good to do business with your neighbors, know where your food comes from and enjoy being here. Some say the grass is greener…I like to fertilize the side I’m on.

Can you tell us about your history with Fargo and what made you decide to stay here? Stoker: As I mentioned, Fargo was the big city when growing up in Clearbrook, MN – my first escalator and elevator ride in one day. So, when I came to Fargo to play volleyball at NDSU, it felt good. Getting a job at Great Plains Software when there were about 15 people is what kept me here…for over 30 years…it seems crazy to say that. I don’t feel that old!

The HoDo does a lot of work with cancer and other charities. Why is this important to you? Stoker: We are a mission driven, socially conscious organization. If everyone helps each other along, it’s a better place. It’s great to be part of a community. We’re not many generations from the pioneers who knew the importance of working together to get things done and help each other out.

What do you want people to remember you for someday?Stoker: For being helpful, curious, kind and collaborative. Being a good steward. Being a good mom. It may seem the hotel would be an answer, however, the hotel is a collection of many good things in our region. It’s an honor and pleasure to be a part of, I see it having a life of its own.

How long have you been bartending?I’ve been in the industry for 24 years, nine years at Rooters.

Why do you stay with it?I like interacting with the people. You can be yourself and be goofy. I like to run around. I wouldn’t do well behind a desk. I have too much energy for that.

Favorite joke?It’s so bad: A horse walks into the bar and the bartender says why the long face.

First date advice?Leave your cellphone in the car. It amazes me how many people will be at a table as a group and they’re all on their cellphones. Why’d you waste a shower on that?
