Runners, triathletes, walkers and mud runners- we are starting a new year which gives us more time to do the things we love to do to make us feel happy to be alive. One of the main reasons we exercise is to challenge ourselves both mentally and physically and to push ourselves a little to the outer limits of our comfort zone. I think this extra effort makes the stress in our lives easier to handle. This New Year brings us a multitude of opportunities to enhance our training routines.

The shoe companies now offer a great selection of different types of footwear. The minimalist category has continued to grow, but the shoe companies in this group still have not addressed the width issue. If a shoe company doesn’t make widths in a shoe and you have a wide foot, they are telling you that their shoes are not made for your foot. I find, except for a small percentage of runners, minimalist shoes are good for a second shoe, to run off road or for the gym. If you get injured from not having enough support or cushioning,

then you can’t be pushing your limits nor enjoy being alive.

There are a lot of new updates in regular trainers for every day use. These established companies like Brooks, Asics, Saucony, Nike, New Balance and Mizuno have created some nice updates and offer almost everything you need to keep your feet healthy while training. Most of them offer width sizes for a proper fit. Some of the new models also offer a lower heel to promote more of a mid foot strike while still having good stability features. The Saucony Guide 5 is a good example of this with an 8 MM heel drop as opposed to the 12 MM drop featured in most trainers. For the people out there with flat feet, the motion control shoe is still available from most shoe companies. I feel the Brooks Beast does the best job of stabilizing your foot, but if you find that shoe too bulky, try a good stability shoe with a supportive over the counter insert.

Today, not only do we have a great selection of footwear but we also have a great selection of apparel and electronics to make our exercise routines more enjoyable. Garmin and Polar both offer unique ways to track your training and give you complete data on your heart rate and your speed and distance. Nike Plus units coupled with the Apple features offer everything from an app, to speed and distance, to heart rate data all down- loadable to a Nike training site. Most major shoe companies are making quality apparel with very good wicking properties to help keep you dry. Don’t forget about compression wear for everything from leg sleeves for shin and calf issues to thigh sleeves for hamstring and quad issues. There are also many phone apps with training programs and ways to help you record your exercise. With all of this great equipment available, it is time for all us to push the edge a little with our training and that will make us feel more alive.

BEGINNING MARATHON TRAINING MADE EASIER AND MORE PAIN FREE

By Gene Ulishney, B.S. HPE, LMT, C. Ped.

So, you’ve just decided to run 500 miles or more. It’s like running from Tampa to Ft. Lauderdale and back - what an accomplishment! Some of you are doing it for the challenge and others for its weight loss, muscular, cardiovascular and/or stress relief health aspects. The best thing is, even if you are primarily focusing only on one, you still get all the rest. So, how can we help you to continue to achieve your goals and make running the base of your new healthy lifestyle?

The first thing you want to do is find a good coach or training program. There are many out there and based on your interests, your local running store will be the best resource to match you with one. Your coach will provide a plan that will get you to and through your first and subsequent marathons or half marathons.Depending on your current fitness level, your training may take anywhere from 3 to 6 months before that big day.

Secondly, while in your local running store, buy your most important piece of equipment – your running shoes. Here’s where you have the best chance to get a pair matched to your foot shape and stability and fitness levels. These are all extremely important for your protection and comfort levels as you continue your training program. As a rule, especially when beginning, muscle pain is normal especially if you haven’t exercised in a while. But, pay attention to pain in and around any joint. This is not normal, especially if it persists. Running should not cause these types of pains. Bottom line, if it does then there is a better running shoe out there for you. Go back to your running store with your current shoes to have them evaluated (as always)…and you, reevaluated. The best running stores can discuss your pain(s) and other issues such as blisters, numbness, etc., and then make a more educated recommendation based on your shoe wear and concerns. To help keep you from becoming injured (something that requires you to stop running), all aches and pains during and after running should be mentioned. While being fitted with your new shoes, ask your sales person why he or she thinks they would be a better choice. Running shoes that are matched to you will give untold numbers of pain-free and “run happy” miles.

Lastly, there are a number of other protective and comfort-enhancing elements to running. The ever important foot support – something I recommend to everyone for both performance and injury prevention; comfortable, nicely padded, protective, wicking socks; synthetic-fiber, wicking apparel – no cotton; invaluable energy foods; leg compression sleeves for improved circulation, especially for recovery; and a sports watch or GPS watch (you can now get a good GPS for about $100). Your running store can explain the benefits and guide you to which will be best for you. If you need additional help, have an unresolved pain issue or are interested in a personal consultation, email me at [email protected] pain is not an inevitable consequence of running, so don’t expect it.

PLANNING FOR 2012: what you need to know about insuring your safety

As most of you know, in addition to being involved in the multisport lifestyle for the past twenty nine years, I have been a practicing attorney for more than thirty seven years. I’ve periodically written pleas to all triathletes and cyclists to under-stand how the insurance laws work for anyone riding the roads of Florida. Here’s a recap of some of the more important facts to know to protect yourself when on the road: 1. Have the highest limits of uninsured/underinsured motorists’ coverage you can afford to buy on your automobile insurance: yes, your AUTO insurance policy covers you while on your bike (or, for that matter, if running/jogging) if struck by a motor vehicle. Don’t depend on the irresponsible driver to be responsible about car-rying adequate limits of liability insurance themselves. This UM/UIM coverage will act as the at fault driver’s liability coverage if they either don’t have enough cover-age to pay for your damages, or, even worse, if they have no liability coverage. The estimate is that currently in the Pinellas/Hillsborough area, between one quarter and one third of the drivers on the road have NO liability coverage. 2. Always ride to the far right side of the road, unless a parked car or debris prevents this; or unless to do so would in itself create an unsafe condition (think the Snell Isle/Shore Acres bridge, where you have to take the whole road for safety); 3.Whenwithagroup;alwaysridesinglefile;driver’salreadydislikeus;theythink we should be on the sidewalk, not on THEIR road; don’t give them an opportu-nity to take you down; 4. Remember when you are driving your vehicle that Florida law mandates you give a three foot buffer between your vehicle and a bicyclist; give more if you can; 5. When at a controlled intersection (light or stop sign) follow the law that ap-plies to you when driving; that same law applies to all of us on our bicycles, cycling club gang techniques notwithstanding. Just because cyclists in front of you had a green doesn’t give you the right to run the red to stay with the group. 6. If you are hit by a motor vehicle, even if you think you’ll be ok (“I expect to be sore, I just got hit by a car!”), get yourself checked out by a doctor; it’s better to not need a record later than need one and not have it. This is especially true if you strike your helmeted head (because NO ONE should ever ride without a helmet) on any object. Brain injuries are the most overlooked injury in a car/cycling accident. 7. Ignore your auto insurance agent’s statement that as long as you have health insurance, you don’t need UM/UIM. Health insurance will pay the doctor to patch you up, but won’t pay you a dime for living with an impairment (think: loss of a limb, brain damage, or, for that matter, any injury that takes away from you your ability to live your active lifestyle). It’s great to have health insurance; it’s essential you have good UM/UIM coverages. 8. Lastly, hope you never need any of these coverages, and never have an accident. Unfortunately, as we know, sooner or later, we probably will be in one; be prepared to economically survive yours.

That Smell Isn't You; It's Your Clothes! Did you know? Technical clothes that wick sweat can also whip up a powerful sweat-driven smell. Workout clothes are under constant attack from "funk", aka bacteria, starting with their very first use. Why? Technical fabrics are made from hollow fibers designed to channel moisture and heat away from your body. Body oils accumulate within synthetic fibers more easily than in natural ones. These body oils provide a welcome home to bacteria, and the bacteria are what actually cause your clothes to smell. And a hot-water wash? Well that just invigorates the little biota. So your clothes come out of the wash smelling fresh and clean, but as soon as you add heat and moisture, in other words, as soon as you start to sweat, the bacteria bloom and reactivate! That’s why you can sometimes smell like @#%$* within just a few minutes of exercise. Just remember, that smell isn’t you; it’s your clothes! You can do three things to help fight the funk! 1. Dry your clothes ASAP after working out.

Bacteria multiply in moist environments. 2. Wash with WIN or Penguin Brand detergents and air-dry.

Using WIN or Penguin Brand detergent helps reduce bacteria density in hollow fibers and creates a less bacteria-hospitable environment within the fabrics. Regular detergents actually block the fibers.

Odor-producing bacteria that live on synthetic fabrics are invigorated by heat, so don't machine dry, which adds extra heat and re-activates those stinky little biota.

3. Replace clothes after two years.

After two years, it is almost certain that bacteria will have established a permanent beachhead in any fabric.

Elasticity and other important fabric characteristics will also likely have deteriorated to the point of deserving replacement.

Rich Wills is the owner of FITniche, a group of 3 small community running stores located in North Tampa, Clearwater and Lakeland. You can replace your workout clothes at a FITniche near you.

MINIMALIST SHOES: the simple truth

Simpler really can be better sometimes. Certainly you've seen or read about the rise of the seemingly very simple minimalist shoes like Vibrams, Newtons, Nike Free and others. They're the fastest growing category of shoes in all three of FITniche stores and show no signs of letting up. So many of you are adopting the shoes (or at least talking about them), and so much information is swirling around out there (some of it dangerous), that we thought it important to share with yu our thoughts on the key pros, cons and best practices for using minimalist footwear.

DEFINITIONMinimalist shoes eliminate much of the weight and most of the structure, as well as the downhill slope from heel to forefoot in shoes. Traditional shoes usually have a 10-14% downhill pitch from the heel. Minimalist shoes usually have a 0-4% pitch from the heel.

MINIMALIST PROS• Makes it likely you'll land closer to midfoot, or at least less heavily on your heels. • The more impact force the midfoot absorbs, the more lightly your overall strike--usually! • Minimalist shoes are also lighter, and that means you'll usually run faster. (Shaving ounces in a shoe is equivalent to losing pounds from

your torso!) • You'll also use more of the foot's smaller muscle structures, theoretically making you stronger and less injury prone.

MINIMALIST CONS• You'll need more elasticity in your calf and achilles to handle the close-to-flat heels, so it's important to gradually work them in to your

training. • Many of the shoes have no cushioning. Most have very little structure. So form and technique are critical to ensure your long-term health.

More on that below. • Because of the lack of cushioning and structure, you'll need to stay more focused on your form and technique. • Running on engineered surfaces (uniformly hard, flat surfaces like sidewalks and paved roads) should be done with more engineered

(traditional) shoes. The bare foot works best on natural surfaces where every footstep is a little different from the one before it and the ground is softer. Running on uniformly hard, flat surfaces where every footstep is just like the one before it requires more structure and cushion in a shoe to protect you from overuse-type injuries. Fat pads in the foot break down faster, stress fractures are more likely, and weak infrastructure links can occur more readily over time when running in extreme minimalist product on roads and sidewalks.

BEST PRACTICES!1. Gradually get your body used to running in minimalist product. Start with 5 minutes and add just a couple of minutes more each time out--until you

get to a total of 30 minutes. 2. Wear extreme minimalist shoes on natural surfaces only! If you don't have access to a trail, run in the grass beside the sidewalk or road. It's more

fun there anyway! 3. When you want to put the earphones in and turn your brain off, wear traditional shoes. Traditional shoes stabilize the foot extremely effectively

when fitted correctly. 4. When you want to be fully engaged with your environment and focused on your form and technique, wear minimalist shoes, which will strengthen

your infrastructure and help make better form more likely. 5. Keep both types of shoes in your arsenal. 6. Use minimalistic shoes to enjoy running lighter, faster, and with better form! 7. Let trained professionals (like us at FITniche!) help you select the right minimalist product for your training needs, body type and biomechanics!
