We are fast approaching thatspecial time of the year to gettogether and celebrate. CONVENTION TIME!!!

August 17 – 21 is a time to visitwith old friends and make newones. We will have a multitude oftalent just waiting to be tapped.Remember if you are an FPPmember to register before August11th to avoid a $25 charge at the door.

Many years ago I attended my firstConvention, without the benefit ofknowing anyone there. I volun-teered for the welcome committee

and met so many people... Thatwas the beginning of my journeyalong the FPP path. I have come tolove and cherish my memories andfriends. So many of my friends haveevolved from FPP. Please volunteerif you haven’t and make lifelong friends.

I have watched as the industry hastaken different paths. I believephotography is still a strong andviable business. Buying a cameradoesn't make you a photographer. Itmakes you a camera owner. FPP is here to help our photographersbecome photographers not cameraowners. We offer seminars, Florida

School and Convention to offer theknowledge that is needed.

We need you to come to yourConvention in August with apassion to make it the best one yet.

Bring your smiles, your laughs andyour ummmmmmmm wallets! Wehave a great Trade Show! “Let’sshow our vendors we appreciatethose deals they bring us eachyear”.

Don’t forget to check in at thehospitality room I will be yourhostess this year. Can’t wait! n

The FPP has always had a veryspecial place in my heart. If anyone

out there is reading this and you arenot a member or are a member thathas not yet re-joined, please readthis part. The FPP takes care of itsmembers!! I can personally vouchfor the love and camaraderie thatcomes from joining the FPP Family. Many years ago my I was gettingready to photograph a small Fridaynight wedding when I got a phonecall that my daughter was in a caraccident and being airlifted to thehospital. What is a mother to do! Imade one phone call to the FPPoffice and talked to the FPP Exec.Dir. of that time, Teri Crownover, and was told go to the hospital, WE(FPP) will handle it. Sure enough, three photographers showed up tocover the wedding and when theyfigured out three was too many, one of them came to the hospital tosee how we were doing. CAN YOUBEAT THAT! Yes I can, when mydaughter had a brain aneurism the

FPP could not do anything on itsown since they are a non-profitorganization, but Kaye Newsome, our current Exec. Dir. took it uponherself to help us by organizing afund raiser to help Steph purchaseher meds. They raised enoughmoney for us to be able to buy hermedication, to the tune of $400.00per prescription. There are manymore times the FPP and itsmembers went to bat for themembers of our organization. Ifanyone out there also has a story, send it to me. I will make sure it ispublished. Okay, time to move on.Being Convention Manager is reallya very scary job, but as I startedtalking with our speakers I havefound they are very friendly andvery ready to share. I feel as if weare old friends and I think they willmake you feel that way too. Okayso here is our line-up so far, wemay be adding a couple more.

What I Know...Frank FrostM.Photog,Cr., CPP

Sponsored by Pounds Labs

Young Frank led a mundane life, ate white bread, never put sugar onhis oatmeal, always vanilla icecream and plain cheese pizza. Themost excitement he ever allowedhimself was to put baseball cards inhis bicycle spokes.

All that changed the day he marriedCheri. His life soon became acaffeine induced, coaster ride of

belly laughs (equivalent to the bestCheech & Chong high one couldpossibly achieve) and high impactdrama (think Raiders of the LostArk), rendering his quiet existence athing of the past. To escape themadness, he found solace inphotographing weddings... huh?

His brides had babies, leading himinto the world of family portraiture. Those babies grew up, went to highschool, and suddenly he foundsuccess in the world of senior portraits.

The madness of home life becamethe norm for poor Frank, and todayhe gladly eats pumpernickel bread,Splenda on his oatmeal, Neapolitanice cream, and bacon on his pizza.

Frank will show us how he hassurvived the madness of home lifewhile running a full time, high-endportrait studio for over 25 years -through the digital revolution, aswell as the industry chaos we seemto be surrounded with today.Specializing in Families, Seniors, and Weddings, Frank will covereverything from marketing, posing, and lighting to in-person sales andcustomer service. So, if you're readyto get serious about your business, roll up your sleeves and join us.

The Business of BelliesCindy BehnkeM.Photog.Cr

Maternity portraiture has become agrowing part of the business at

Behnke Fine Portraiture. WhenCindy Behnke attended an openhouse at a local business that catersto expectant mothers, she thought itmight be an opportunity to get afew portraits displayed of her mater-nity work. That event turned into agreat addition to the business sheruns with her husband.

Cindy will discuss how that networking opportunity turned into alucrative line of portraiture that hasproduced some of their largestportrait sales the past few years. She will show how they market toget clients, do an actual maternityphoto shoot showing posing anddraping that flatters the pregnantmothers, and demonstrate bodypositions that work. What better wayto create a client for life, than creatinga piece of art for the mom to be?

Cindy, along with her husband,Bert, own Behnke Fine Portraiturein Mokena IL (established in 1956by Bert's parents!). Cindy has wonnumerous awards in competition. She's a past president of the AssociatedProfessional Photographers of Illinoisand currently serves as a PPACouncilor and a past director ofPPA Charities.

weddings. Rather than get their infoand send a packet of weddingpricing, why not get them to thestudio for an engagement portraitsession? For years, this was justsomething couples did to put anannouncement in the newspaper. Now it's a way to create somethingspecial for the newly engaged coupleand drive business to your studio.

Bert will go into his reason forcreating an engagement portraitsession that has turned portraitclients into wedding clients whichin turn creates lifetime clients. Afteryears of saying "no" to weddings, his son joined the studio anddecided to get the family businessback into the wedding market. Sothe engagement session guest bookhas created a buzz for the studioand helped them to book weddings. There will be a live posing andlighting demo as well as a sessionshowing what sells and how tocreate a fun book that couples love.

Why Make it Harder Than it Needs to Be?Landon Day

Sponsored by Full Color Lab and FPP

Photographers spend hours uponhours researching the latest camerasand gear, but the gist of photog-raphy has been and will always belight. Light is everywhere, so why isit so hard to see? There is a timeand place for many lights andcomplex set ups, but I feel this isthe extreme minority of what wedo. You may have heard it said thatGod lights the whole world with amain and a reflector, so Why MakeIt Harder Than It Needs To Be?Landon will be covering how to seelight the way your camera sees it.How often do you find yourselfsaying “That looked better in myhead?” He will cover outsidesessions using one speed light onTTL and once a base is builtincrease in difficulty from there. With a good base, the rest comesnaturally. He will cover how towork alone and how to use “mom”as an assistant.

Landon will also cover inside studiolighting with constant lights andstrobes and how to know when touse which one; there is a method tothe madness. The question he willbe covering throughout will simplybe, Why Make It Harder Than ItNeeds To Be?

Shoot to ThrillMichael MowbrayM.Photog.Cr

Sponsored by ACI and FPP

It's not enough in today's ultra-competitive market to createquality, standard portraits.

You have to separate yourself fromthe competition and motivate theclient to choose you over theirother options. Put simply, you haveto Shoot to Thrill. You must amaze, stun, and astonish your market withbreath-taking portraiture. Use cool, dramatic lighting, nail your posingand direction and make your clientlook awesome. The images on yourmarketing materials, web site, andFacebook page need to grab theviewer and refuse to let go. But itdoesn't stop there; you have tothrill the client at every turn. Yourediting, your service skills, yourstudio ambiance, your interactionwith your client, your product mix -ALL must contribute to an incred-ible experience that turns yourclients into motivated fans.

On the technical side, MichaelMowbray will show you how heleverages speedlites to createimages that thrill his clients. Everwonder if speedlites could work forlighting everything at your studio?Michael says "YES!" Michael usesspeedlites for 99.9% of his lightingwork. In the studio, on location -EVERYWHERE! As a senior andwedding photographer, Michael hasfound that it fits his working style toa T. He adds, "The funny thing is, Iown a complete set of studio lightsthat sits in the closet gathering dust.I've found that as I've built mylighting style around the mastery ofspeedlites, my work has gottenbetter. I've crafted a unique style,my sales have increased, and myworkflow has gotten simpler. Plus,I've gotten my evenings back in thesummer - I schedule my seniorsessions between 10am and 4pm! Ino longer chase light... I create it!And I no longer fear the sun... Iembrace it."

Note that dues must be paid beforeentering and the entry fees must bepaid on line. Jeff Burton of Proofcastis hosting the website again thisyear and will handle all entries.

As the same as last year, that doesnot mean you can’t compete withprints but you must still enter digitalfiles for our record keepingpurposes. Prints may be enteredinto any category except albums.

Here’s the entry site: http://print-competition.com/ The entry portalis open now! When you go there,

you will see it is a“Proofcast” sitefor professional print competitionmanagement. You will need toregister as a new user the firsttime and select the correct organi-zation. I strongly encourage you toregister well before the deadline ofAugust 9th, so that if you have anyissues whatsoever there is time toget it straightened out. Otherwiseyou’ll be paying a late fee.

You must use the email address inthe FPP database. You will receivea password immediately so you canaccess the site and update yourinformation, then you can changeyour password to something youcan remember.

If you want to enter prints to bejudged or to hang as display prints,no problem. There are two ways toget them to us:

You can ship them or hand-deliverthem to Reedy Photo in St.Petersburg no later than 5 PM onAugust 14th. Debbie Alcorn will bebringing them to Convention; or

Hand-deliver your case no laterthan 8AM, Saturday, August 17 inthe Salon Room at the OrlandoRosen Plaza Convention site.

Updates and IMPORTANTRevisions to the Rules:

Images Files: Image files must besized so the maximum dimensionin any direction is 3,000 pixelsincluding presentation mats (8inches at 200 ppi). In the rules, Ihad previously stated they were amaximum of 1,600 – that isINCORRECT.

File Naming: File names for imagesis now very, very easy. You do notneed to go through the namingagony of last year. You will nowsimply enter your name when registering your print, the title ofyour image, and that’s it! This istrue for Photographic entries, EIentries and albums.

Albums: Digital albums can now

be uploaded as a single zip file intothe Proofcast system. You willname the zip file the album name. Each page of the album should benamed with a two digit number, i.e.01.jpg, 02.jpg and so on.

A quick checklist for you:

• Confirm your membership in FPPby logging in: https://www.fppon-line.org/access/• Review the rules on FPP’swebsite:https://www.fpponline.org/user-files/RULES%202013.pdf• Title your images, this is a greatexcuse to get together with friendsand brainstorm. • Select the correct categories foryour entries. Don’t forget that wehave eliminated a few categoriesthis year. Please also keep in mindthat the category you enter yourprint is where it will stay. Judgesand Moderators cannot and will notmove your entries for you. Thecategory you choose is where itneeds to be best suited for thehighest score.• Preregister on Proofcast’s websitebefore August 9th: http://printcompetition.comandupdate your profile (such as enteryour cell phone number if you wantto be notified of your scores by text, designate your memberships andaffiliations, etc.)• Double check your print sizes, color profiles, and quality beforeentering your images on thewebsite. Once your images havebeen uploaded, you cannot changeyour submissions.• Print your labels from the websiteand affix them to the back of yourprints if you are submitting printsfor judging.

A word about print sizes...The minimum print entry size is320 square inches. This is the tradi-tional 16x20 but not necessarilythat shape. Since the maximumdimension of any print entry is 24inches in any direction, it can be24”x13.33” - that’s still 320 squareinches. The maximum entry size is576 square inches, which means

you can enter a 24”x24” print. Thelarger size is a great benefit forthose entering prints in theElectronic Imaging category, givingthem more room for required guideimages. The above dimensions arethe physical size of the entry. Theactual image (not including presen-tation mattes) on a print entry mustbe a minimum of 80 square inches. That means the image can be assmall as an 8”x10” or it can be a24”x3.33” print (like a panoramic),since 24 inches is the maximumdimension. And can also be24”x24”, which is where themaximum of 576 square inchescomes into play.

A Review of Electronic Imaging...All digital manipulation must havebeen done by the maker in the EIcategory. Please do not enter thiscategory if any of the work hasbeen out sourced in any way. Tocompete in this category, the maker is being judged on digital manipulation.

Also please remember that anyentry in EI that was produced froman existing image done by someoneother than the maker must beaccompanied by written permissionfrom the original creator of thatimage. There is an exception to thisfor entries in the Restoration categories, it may be impossible toobtain that permission.

A New and Completely DifferentSalon Experience in 2013!Please see the other article in thismagazine about our brand spankingnew Proofcast Lounge! We hopethat the PCL will be a great way tohave it both ways – you can hearthe judges, you can see the imageup for judging, but you can alsodiscuss it freely with friends!

Cheering, discussion, groaning andagonizing is acceptable and encour-aged.

Good luck to all entrants this year!I look forward to working with youall and making this a successfulyear in Print Competition! n

New for 2013 The ProofCastLounge ROBIN ADAMS,COMPETITION MANAGER

New this year, FPP will have anopportunity to watch print competi-tion in a completely new way.Sound interesting? We think so.

Jeff with Proofcast will be settingup the ProofCast Lounge (or ifyou’re cool “the PCL”) downstairsnear the Trade Show. The ProofcastLounge will be a gathering placewhere you can watch print compe-tition via a live internet feed. Youcan watch images come up, hearthe judges discuss the print and seethe final score. Competitors andnon-competitors are welcome tothe PCL and questions are encouraged.

The best part of the PCL is thatnoise is allowed, applause isencouraged and cheering, groaningor sounds of indignation are toler-ated.Finally... a place where youcan ask questions and talk freely asthe print is being judged.

From Jeff Burton of Proofcast:“There is no need to suppress yourfeelings of joy, excitement, or evenfrustration. If you are frustrated, what better environment to expressyourself than with your fellowartists? If you do well, what betterplace to be as your friends congrat-ulate you on your success!”

FPP’s PCL will have a hostess . . .none other than our talented andbeautiful Carol Walker! She willmake sure the party is going strongin true FPP style with games andcontests for your chance to winvaluable prizes. Details are comingsoon... Check our website! n

See you at the Convention. n

Our HistoryIn 1933, A convention was orga-nized by Kodak and some of thesuppliers of photographic equip-ment and chemistry (yes, chem-

istry), and held on campus at theUniversity of Florida. The attendeesdecided to form an organization torepresent the professional photogra-phers in attendance from all overFlorida. The Florida PhotographersAssociation was officially formed

during that convention on May 3,1933, with approximately 30members, each paying $2 for theirannual dues.

During WWII, due to gas and foodrationing, the FPA did not hold aconvention for three full years ('42-'44). They resumed their conven-tion schedule in 1945, foreverputting the number of conventionstwo years behind the actual age ofthe association. in 1985, the FPPcelebrated the 50th Convention, butthe association was 52 years old.

In the 1950's, the organizationchanged its name to the FloridaProfessional Photographers andhave continued to educate itsmembers through conventions, seminars, and schools. n

Do you feel like you're not gettingeverything out of programs or semi-nars as you should? Here are sixways to maximize your involvement:

1. Arrive early. This gives you thecontrol to make the seminar work foryou. Arriving early gets you "in themood" for learning and helps youavoid the stress of rushing in at thelast minute. 2. Remove yourself from officepressures. Nothing's worse thantaking the studio with you every-where you go. Let the office functionwithout you for one day; ask yourassistant to leave messages or makean appointment at a set time tocheck-in. 3. Bring business cards. Attendingan educational seminar gives you anedge, both intellectually and profes-sionally. It's a great place fornetworking and you'll want to havebusiness cards ready for those peoplewith whom you'd like to keep intouch. 4. Introduce yourself to at leastthree people sitting near you. Youobviously have something incommon with them; they all work inthe photographic industry and theywant to learn - there's no better wayto make new contacts. 5. Take notes. It helps yourcomprehension to make a few notes, even on the handouts. Write downquestions as they pop up so you'llremember to ask them later. 6. Participate in the discussion. You'll remember more of the mate-rial if you participate in the discus-sion. If you have a suggestion thatworks or had a similar problem andsolved it, share that information soothers can learn from your experience.

New FPP Members

The FPP is just one branch of aprofessional hierarchy in the photo-graphic industry. In the "trickle up"explanation, it would begin withyour local guild, section or affiliate. There are several professionalphotography associations called"sections" or "guilds" within the stateof Florida. Each has earned thedistinction of being called an"Affiliate" of the FPP. Some are alsoseparately affiliated with PPA(Professional Photographers ofAmerica).

The FPP is a state organization whichis an "affliliate" of both the regional(SEPPA) and national (PPA) organiza-tions. Do you want to find an FPPAffiliate in this area? Go to fpponline.org to find one near you.

SEPPA (Southeastern ProfessionalPhotographers Association) is ourregional association, and if you're amember of the FPP, you're also auto-matically a member of SEPPA. SEPPAis one of five "districts" of PPA andits membership is comprised of thestate memberships of FL, GA, MS/AL,NC, SC, VA, TN, WV, MD, DE, andWashington, DC. SEPPA holds aconvention every two years (the oddnumbered year) in Athens, GA and isonly $49 to attend the conventionfor all SEPPA members!

PPA is our national organization andthe largest photographic associationin the world.

Each of these organizations worktogether to assist its members inachieving their business and artisticgoals. To become a member in onewill likely lead to becoming amember in all of them. We're justone big 'ol happy family! n
