Welcome from the Dean of the College of Education at Florida State University

It is my great pleasure to offer this word of welcome from the Florida State University College of Education to all of you attending the 2013 Southeast Regional Conference of the Comparative and International Education Society. The College has a long history in international and comparative education, offering master’s and doctoral degrees and engaging in various research and development initiatives around the world. Many education faculty members are collaborating with international scholars, and internationalizing education is a prominent theme threaded throughout the College’s strategic plan. In addition, approximately a third of graduate students in the College are international, hailing from over 40 countries,

including Korea, China, Turkey, and Israel, to name only a few. We are proud of this rich diversity that provides our students to unique perspectives and ideas. We are delighted to co-sponsor this conference and to support the scholarly conversations on global issues in education that will take place over the next couple of days. Enjoy! Marcy P. Welcome from the Director, Learning Systems Institute

On behalf of the faculty and staff of Florida State University’s Learning Systems Institute, particularly its Center for International Studies in Educational Research and Development, welcome to this 2013 Southeast Regional Conference of the Comparative and International Education Society. The conference organizers have put together what promises to be a stimulating program of sessions addressing educational developments in the Muslim world, the fate of African school dropouts, and a wide range of topics of interest to scholars and students of international and comparative education. The Learning Systems Institute has a long and distinguished history of engagement in international educational development. Since its founding

in 1969, LSI has attracted more than $400 million in support from organizations such as the U.S. Agency for International Development, the U.S. Department of State, UNICEF, the World Bank, and many others for educational research and development projects in Africa, Latin America, and East and Southeast Asia. In that time generations of LSI faculty and researchers contributed to the improvement of education in the developing world, both through their work here at LSI and in their service to a broad range of international governmental and non-governmental organizations in the United States and around the world. While we are proud of LSI’s legacy in the field, we are equally excited about our ongoing contributions to international educational research and development. Under the auspices of the Center for International Studies in Educational Research and Development, LSI faculty are currently helping to improve primary grades reading achievement and instruction in Ethiopia and Tuvalu, providing training for future community college administrators in Indonesia, and working to better align university research and instruction in the Philippines with that country’s economic development needs. We are constantly on the lookout for new opportunities to collaborate with individuals and organizations here and abroad to bring LSI’s expertise to bear on the search for solutions to educational problems around the world. We are delighted to support this Southeast Regional Conference of CIES to help reinvigorate the scholarly dialogue and professional relationships that support all of us in our efforts to improve education around the world.
