Infartssignal…

In an edition that hints of doom and gloom, I shall try to offer some light! This journal serves to report on the progress on the FLMJ, and whilst there is little progress to report, it has been impossible to keep up with that task. This is largely due to a severe lack of funding, and this will be ongoing for the foreseeable future. In order to escape the negativity that my hobby represents at this time, I have devoted more time to the 7¼” gauge (184mm) “Acton Miniature Railway,” which although themed on the London Underground, and not the Swedish railways, it has been a great source of enjoyment for me, and with the resignalling of that railway reaching a critical stage, I was only too happy to devote even more time than usual to it. Also, of course, AJK is very low on active members turning up, and without whom it is very difficult to maintain and operate! But more on that further in this edition!

Tom Birch

It is with much sadness that I report on the passing of Tom Birch, the founding Chairman of the Scandinavian Railways Society. Tom’s personal interests were with the Danish railways, and we enjoyed a good deal of humorous banter at the various events that we attended together. Even after Tom passed the Chairmanship to another member, his input and enthusiasm continued unabated and it was a fitting tribute for him in recent years to become recognised as the Honorary President of that Society. Tom had visited the FLMJ on a couple of occasions, and despite our Swedish theme, he took a great interest in the railway and the people, even the young ones to whom he gave much inspiration. Little over a year ago, Tom became quite unwell and had to step down from a number of activities. His recovery appeared to be in good pace, but alas he was defeated in the end. My condolences go to his wife and family.

Modell Järnvägar / Svenska Järnvägar

SJ News. A train with 180 passengers got stuck in a tunnel outside Söderhamn, east central Sweden on 11th August, after a torrential rainstorm with those stuck inside describing the situation as the 'worst action film.' The train was travelling from Stockholm to Sundsvall when it got stuck in the tunnel at approximately 13:30 on Sunday. There was a heavy downpour and the water ran into the tunnel and dragged a lot of rubbish and debris with it. The train was unable to continue so rescue services were called in to clear the debris so the train could continue. Passengers had to remain on-board the train as the tunnel is long and emergency services have said it would be hard to evacuate. They would have had to go about 1½km. The Norrala tunnel is one of the longest in Sweden at approximately 4 kilometres. Rail traffic came to a stop for several hours Monday morning, 26th August between Uppsala and Gävle because the overhead electrical wires had been stolen. The theft, near Tierp, was probably for the copper in the cables. The line has double tracks, and one of them was restored to service quite quickly. Just after 5:30 PM Saturday 31st August, the last train left Kiruna station. Traffic resumed immediately from a temporary station that is expected to be in service for several years. The plan is to build a new Kiruna station, although the exact location is still uncertain. The local map is being transformed as the town centre is being moved, to make room for an expansion of the mine that is the economic foundation of the community. The old station has been in service for more than a century, but the local authorities have withdrawn monument protection, and the building is scheduled to be torn down. The much-delayed project to relieve a major bottleneck on the Göteborg – Malmö line reached an important milestone on September 4, when tunnel boring machine ‘Åsa’ emerged into the daylight at the northern portal of the 8.7km Hallandsås tunnel, marking the completion of tunnelling works. The first bore of the SEK 10.5bn twin-bore tunnel between Båstad and Förslöv was holed through in August 2010. Tunnelling originally started in 1992 but was halted in 1997 when the project was one-third complete because of serious environmental concerns. Tunnelling restarted in 2005 and the project is now scheduled to be finished in 2015. The tunnel is a key element in upgrading Sweden's West Coast Line replacing a steeply-graded single-track section on the line with a new double-track section. The tunnel will allow the number of trains to be increased from four to 24 per hour, while doubling the maximum permitted weight for freight trains. It will also allow the maximum speed of passenger trains to be increased from 80km/h to 200km/h.

The tunnel is being constructed by a joint venture of Skanska and Vinci, and involves the installation of around 40,000 concrete segments. Since being launched in autumn 2005, Åsa has drilled through a varied and unstable geology consisting of gneiss, amphibolites and dolorite. In order to drive the TBM through the Mölleback zone, a highly-decomposed and water-bearing fissure, a 230m horizontal rock section had to be frozen. Trafikförvaltningen Stockholm has awarded Ballast Nedam, Netherlands, a contract to supply a de-icing system, which will be used to keep the Stockholm Local Transport (SL) suburban train fleet ice-free during the winter. Ballast Nedam says the fully-automated system is developed from those it has already supplied to German Rail (DB) and sprays the entire underside of the train with warm water. The amount of water applied to each wheel-set varies according to the degree of ice accumulation. The modular system will be manufactured in the Netherlands and Sweden in collaboration with Ballast Nedam's Swedish partner AWI Maskin, which will install the equipment this December. Ballast Nedam will maintain the system for at least two years after delivery. However, as one observer noted, "GCSE level physics tells me that as (soon as) the water supply is turned off the water will cool and ultimately freeze - which is the one thing that isn't needed!" There has been a dramatic increase in the number of people injured working on the railways. Swedish Radio's investigative programme "Kaliber" has looked through incident reports at the Transport Agency from 2003. Until 2007 there were a handful of incidents every year, which rose by 30 to 40 in the period 2010-12. During 2010-2011 four workers were killed by trains, something that never happened in the earlier period. Kaliber talked to the widow of one killed worker; an investigation concluded that the track should have been closed; instead the workers were told to shovel away snow between fast-moving trains, which arrived every few minutes. The northern extension of Stockholm's Tvärbanan light rail line from Alvik to Solna was officially inaugurated on October 27. The 7km extension runs through an 800m tunnel between Alvik and Johannesfred stations, and serves the districts of Ulvsunda and Sundbyberg before terminating at Solna Centrum. The second phase of the extension to Solna mainline station is due to open next year. The journey time between Alvik and Solna Centrum is 15 minutes. Stockholm's T-bana trains will be equipped with alcohol ignition locks. The new devices will be installed on all lines by 2020. The device measures a driver's blood alcohol content through a breath test. Some buses in northern Sweden have also had “Alcolocks” fitted, but alcohol-based hand cleansers had the same effect! _

6 … FLMJ-Nytt

Sweden 2013 Over the last few years, trips to Sweden have taken me to see friends in Stockholm, and I often find myself travelling on the Pendeltåg lines between Centralstation and Sollentuna! It is a rare occasion that I get on an SJ train, and that happened this year, only due to the stupidity of the UL staff at Uppsala station! Although the Stockholm Pendeltåg service now extends to Uppsala via Arlanda (alternating with the service terminating at Märsta), a surcharge is payable beyond Arlanda. (There is also a surcharge to be paid for using the station at Arlanda, because the organisation operating the shuttle service feels that it is losing out on revenue when other operators call there!) My journey included onward travel by bus to Östervåla and this ticket was purchased for 60 crowns. The return journey cost 90 crowns and there was some uncertainty about whether it would be valid on the train! So, at Uppsala, I “took a number” and waited for my turn. I was not impressed by people being allowed to push in, bypassing the number-turn system altogether. When my turn did come, my ticket would have been valid, except that it had only just expired (they’re time-based in a lot of areas in Sweden)! So I complained about the people pushing in but UL

didn’t care, they just wanted another 90 crowns. Too bad, suckers, the SJ fare to Märsta was 68 crowns, and I went by SL from there! The moral is don’t use the number-tickets, they’re not enforced! The FLMJ gained two new locomotives, Rc2 1103 and Ue 592, one passenger carriage B12 4972, and one Roco ‘Habis’ goods wagon in “Skandiatransport” livery. The Rc2 has the later cab window surrounds and ‘flying sausage’ logo, but original roof profile. It is due to be changed to Rc3 1063 (with the ‘meat-stamp’ logo), because this locomotive was in this condition in 1987, as pictured in ‘Nordens Järnvägar” from that year (see page 14). It gives us a second good quality pre-Rc5 in Epoch-IV condition! The Ue-loco had been on back-order, and had arrived whilst I was in Sweden, so I collected and paid for it then. The carriage has gone into the 1960s InterCity set, releasing one of the other carriages there to go into the 1980s InterCity set. The wagon is a replacement for a very poor quality Lima version that we sold a few years ago. Oh, and a minibus for the

station carpark, somewhere, completed my railway purchases! I did have a look in Harambee-Hobby but wasn’t tempted to part with any cash, but due to poor planning, I didn’t get to Eskader. I have often thought of Stockholm as my second home, and this was perhaps the reason why I didn’t really think much about remembering to take photographs! With a personal shift towards Epoch-IV, encouraged by the poor service and drab liveries carried by SJ trains, I don’t have the same sort of enthusiasm as I used to have. So you will have to forgive a rather poor selection of photos, mostly from an over-bridge near Karlberg and from Älvsjö (but Stockholm Ö was also visited)!

My journey home was probably the most horrible travelling experience I have ever had, thanks to the belligerence of the staff at Arlanda airport. Their scanning equipment couldn’t read my boarding pass, so they effectively told me to get lost! In the panic that followed (there was nobody who would help me, even though this was not my fault), I was taken ill; and rather than have to put up with their responsibilities to their passengers, including all the paperwork, they got me onto my plane just as the door was closing! _

Left Upper: Some trailer cars on the Roslagsbanan have been modified with a middle set of doors at platform level, to be of use to disabled passengers. Left Lower: Spotted at Södra station, a sign over a pub or restaurant (didn’t investigate too thoroughly) featuring a locomotive with an unfortunate coupling rod situation! Below: Old and new just to the north of Centralstation. The X40 set is in SJ’s corporate foggy-grey livery, and the train comes in two varieties, two-car and three-car, and it is usual for one of each to be coupled together to form a five-car train! Adjacent to it, there is a classic X10 set in SL’s later livery. Only a few of these remain in service (all X1 units have been withdrawn, with only one (X1 3019) saved for preservation). X10 units cannot work on the route to Uppsala, apparently, and will certainly not be able to work in the new City Tunnel line when that is opened. More new X60 sets are on order, apparently.

FLMJ in Operation

Despite the unhelpful weather, the FLMJ was open for invited guests October 19th & 20th. Between the many rain showers, our new models from Sweden did get a turn on the railway, along with some more regular models. As usual, there were guest models, this time including new blue Ue 716, and F 1202 (like our F 1207 but in the more familiar black livery).

The Siljansbanan was closed for the weekend, due to engineering, but there was no sign of the replacement buses on the Sunday! There were also very few trains stopping at Månstorp station, mainly because this is a difficult place to stop at when we have so few members present (until we find an affordable CCTV system). We had about 15 guests over the two days; and raised some revenue by parting with some modern models that we hardly ever ran (see page 15)!

One AJK member and five guests attended the FLMJ's limited run in December. All of the routes were open to traffic eventually, but a failure occurred in track 3 at Lövhöjden, so we had to work around that. The FLMJ provided a local passenger train for the Siljansbanan, the InterRegio train, and an ASG block goods train; and one of the guests provided a goods train and a passenger train. _

DVD Review

1435 Elloksveteraner, del 2 LEG Video; Citronvägen 4, SE-293 33 OLOFSTRÖM, Sweden. Web: www.legvideo.se DVD, 65 minutes, Swedish narration. © 2012. Colour.

This is a delightful programme about veteran Swedish railways … not quite so much the locomotives that the title suggests … but it does not disappoint! A few minutes to start on the Nynäsbanan in the 1960s with D-locos and Hb-locos (the latter very similar in appearance to Hg—a point worth making as Jeco has proposed a model of the latter)! It is very interesting to see these loco-hauled trains (each with only 3 carriages) on this line, which is now served by double X60 units! Moving forward to October 1972 and a SJK railtour from Göteborg to Gävle, with BJ O 214 (aka SJ Bk 734) in its original orange and brown livery.

Only a couple of minutes are given to trains meeting at Bor in 1975, featuring Du-locos. This feature also gives an insight to the signalling of trains before CTC / Fjb or even full local hardware was installed. Next, we have a more modern film with Da 800 with a journey from Hagalund to Tillberga along some since-closed permanent way! This recording was made in 1992 and there are some modern liveries in the background! It is somewhat alarming (having never travelled in the cab of a Da-loco,) to see just how much it bounces! Next, we see Da 889 being turned and then put on shed with the assistance of a so-called “Tekla” because the wires don’t extend into the shed. This clip also gave evidence of locos keeping their pantographs up when being turned on a turntable, although we have been assured that the official line is that they should be lowered! This is followed by a cab-ride (very bumpy—probably due to the camera being hand-held) in an Rc-loco along the former Eskilstunabanan in 1992, westbound passing Taxinge Näsby and Läggesta (this section now 600mm narrow gauge as part of the ÖSlJ), before arriving at Åkers Stykebruk, where local operations are shewn, including operational views inside the signalbox!

Du 109 — not just another Du, but this time a timber-body one — is seen on a journey from Kattarp to Höganäs in 1992, complete with a rail-fan photographer running across the track in front of the approaching loco! The programme closes with a “cavalcade” of passing trains, at different locations and different epochs, capturing D (with metal and timber bodies), the solitary Dg2, Da, Hg (topping and tailing with B6 coaches in and around Alingsås), Mg, and Rc locos (the only locos not brown)! In fact there are some views with the original blue livery (with the red ‘flash’) applied to these locos. Two interesting trains in this final feature, are a goods train headed by one Rc and two Hg locos; and a blue Rc with a goods train, the first wagon carrying a Ue loco in orange and blue. As the credits roll, we are back in the cab of the Rc loco returning eastwards along the former Eskilstunabanan, and just to the right can be seen the narrow gauge ÖSlJ rising on the gradient to cross over the standard gauge line, as indeed it used to do! _

FLMJ-Nytt into 2014 2013 has been a difficult year for the FLMJ and for this journal. Funds are at an all-time low, and investment has only been possible with revenue raised by the sale of some models. Whilst development is not possible upon the railway, there is no news to report from the railway, and this is a large part of the reason why the schedule has been so badly disrupted. Naturally, in order to enjoy his hobby (railways generally), the FLMJ’s Director General has diverted his interests to a railway where there is development possible, and thus the FLMJ became almost obsolete! The work at the other railway included a thorough resignalling programme, and this is ongoing, but the most demanding phases are now completed. Thus, in 2014, work will hopefully balance out between these two interests. However, it is doubtful that FLMJ-Nytt can continue in its present format, and so the decision has been taken to reduce it to only three editions each year, but slightly bigger editions. (Also, the internal journal, “AJ-Nyheter” has been scrapped indefinitely!) The press stop dates for the editions shall be the first of March, July and November, with publication dates 15 days thereafter. Readers who have paid an advance subscription will have the renewal dates modified to reflect these changes. Considering that the physical work of producing the prints and then binding and proliferating them is a much bigger task than compiling and writing them, we will also be asking recipients of the complimentary copies if they would favour the online edition? _

Rc3 1063 Rc2 1103 arrived at the FLMJ on 26th September, following purchase two days earlier at MJ-Hobbyexperten in Stockholm. It is the ‘other’ orange Rc-loco produced by Jeco (we took delivery of Rc2 1100 almost as soon as it was released), and the technical differences with this newer one are the later cab widows (metal framed instead of rubber) and the so called “flying falukorv” (falukorv is a Swedish curved sausage) logo. As advertised, it should have also had the modified roof profile, but this did not make it onto the model.

Pre-Rc5 locos started to receive modifications such as the new windows during the late 1980s, but not really gathering pace until the 1990s. The logo, however, was a much later alteration. Nevertheless, “Nordens Järnvägar 1987” carries a picture of Rc3 1063 with the modified windows, “meat-stamp” logo, and orange livery; thus giving us a perfect excuse to have a second orange pre-Rc5 loco at the FLMJ. All we need is to change the number and the logo. _

The picture above (from NJ-87) shews Rc3 1063 passing Alingsås on 4th April 1987. Although built for 160km/h, and therefore used with InterCity and CityExpress services, they were also at home on duties such as the Volvo container train between the Torslanda car plant at Göteborg and the plant at Olofström. Storm Damage

Britain seems to be battling against unpleasant weather at the moment, with storms and floods in the news every day. So far, the damage to the FLMJ is minimal, and the railway remains in service. _
