report published this week on the number of slaves around the

world. The Global Slavery Index reports that around 45 million

people worldwide are held in slavery. This is an increase of 15

million people since 2012. The organisation behind the GSI has

asked richer countries to fight modern slavery more. Which

More than 45 million people around the world are living as slaves according to the latest

study by the Global Slavery Index. The survey is published annually by the Walk Free

Foundation, a multi-national Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) based in Australia. The

2016 survey found that India has the most number of slaves of any country in the world – 18.3

million. Although North Korea has the highest percentage of slaves, where one in 20 of the

Slavery Act, which has aimed to reduce the number of modern slaves in the UK and European

Union.
