Plastics make excellent jacketing materials for electrical cables because of their flexibility, chemical resist- ance, insulation resistance and dielectric properties. While plastics can be formulated to be somewhat fire resistant, they can degrade under fire conditions. Cables may provide a source of fuel for a fire. The addition of industrial or utility contami- nants, such as paper pulp dust or coal dust, add to the dangers by providing fuel that is readily ignitable by welding sparks or even spontaneous combustion. FlameSafe ® C700+ Elastomeric Spray is designed to limit the propagation of fire on elec- trical conductors such as cables in trays, loose cable bundles and other cable installations. For over 25 years, major utilities and corpora- tions have made RectorSeal’s products the Benefits Factory Mutual approved Passes IEEE 1202 Flame Testing of Cables for use in Cable Tray Resilient/UV and weather resistant No ampacity reduction Halogen free; no solvents or inorganic fibers Higher solids, better coverage, greater economy Description FlameSafe C700+ Elastomeric Spray is a water-based, ready-to-use, spray. Factory Mutual approved, it is designed to prevent vertical or horizontal propagation of fire along grouped or single cables. C700+ is suitable for interior or exterior applications. It is UV resistant and virtually unaffected by radiation exposure. C700+ adheres to almost any surface and is safe for all types of cable insulation. It does not contain solvents, plasticizers, asbestos or other hazardous inorganic fibers. FlameSafe C700+ Cable Coating Elastomeric Spray Application FlameSafe C700+ Elastomeric Spray may be applied to the entire cable run or, if specified, at intervals of 10 to 20 ft (3 to 6 m) to serve as fire breaks [3 ft (1 m) coated length for horizontal trays; 5 ft (1.5 m) coated length for vertical trays]. C700+ can be used in applications such as generating stations, substations, transformer vaults, manholes, power distribution systems in high rise buildings, fire hazard areas of oil refineries, paper mills and industrial complexes. Installation FlameSafe C700+ Elastomeric Spray is conductive until dry. Do not apply to ener- gized electrical conductors. Always apply under supervision of plant electrician or safety manager. C700+ is supplied in 5 gal pails and 55 gal drums (19 L pails and 208 L drums). It is specifically designed for application by airless sprayer. However, small or touch-up areas may be brushed or troweled. C700+ should be at room temperature for best appli- cation. Surface and air temperatures should be between 40°F to 90°F (4°C to 32°C) for storage and application. All surfaces to be protected should be free of loose dirt and oil. standard industry.

Apply C700+ in thin layers. If applying morethan one coat, allow 2 to 4 hours drying timebetween coats. Under normal conditions,C700+ dries to touch in 2 hours andcompletely dries in 48 hours. Time requiredfor drying will vary according to environmen-tal conditions.Airless Spray ApplicationCare should be exercised in selecting theproper equipment. All wetted parts of thespray pump should be specified to resist abra-sion. The use of high-density polyethyleneseals in place of the standard PTFE seals willgreatly extend the service life of the pump andreduce downtime. The following represents atypical unit suitable for use with C700+:

Titan: E20/G55 or largerHose: 50 ft x .375 in. plus 6 ft x .25 in. whip(15.2 m x 9.5 cm plus 1.8 m x 6.4 mm whip)Guns: LX 80 or similarPressure: 2500–2800 psiFilters: NoneTip Orifice Range: 0.031–0.035

Equipment PreparationRemove inlet filter strainer, outlet filter andfilter support. Set pressure to 1,000 psi(6895 kPa) tip pressure, 100 ft (30.5 m) of.375 in. (9.5 mm) airless hose is the maximumlength. Clean all equipment with water imme-diately after use. Any unused C700+ shouldbe resealed tightly in original container.EstimatingOne gallon of C700+ will coat 18.5 ft2

(0.4 m2/L) at a recommended dry filmthickness of 63 mils/0.063 in. (1.6 mm).The wet film thickness required to yield therecommended dry thickness is 85–90 mils/0.085–0.09 in. (2.1–2.3 mm). When applyingby airless sprayer allow for material wastedue to overspray. All exposed surfaces shouldbe coated. Calculate all exposed surface areaas follows:

A = [W+H] x 2 x L whereA = Area to be coated (ft2 or m2)W = Cable tray widthH = Cable tray heightL = Cable tray length
