SATURDAY, JAN. 30, 1892.

And Mr. Waterhousc still persists. In the face of the objections to biscandidature of such men as Hon. C.R. UMiop, Hon. J. O. Carter, Messrs.C. M. Cooke, V. "V. Hall, andothers of the party from which hehails, he persists in running againsta ticket that had been generally ac-

cepted as a representative one in theconservative interest. He persistschielly by virtue of the fitful and fan-

tastic backing of the Advertiser. Hisreward will be humiliation for him-

self, if not damage to the best inter-ests of the country.

Many people would like to hearfrom the candidates on the questionof the constitutional amendment

legislation on the labor ques-

tion. When it 'passed at last sessionit was deemed in as good form ascould be devised. Certainly it is all

that can be obtained now withoutwaiting two years more. There hasbeen talk about its being inadequateto its purpose. This talk may, how-

ever, have been started by those whodo not desire the amendment in anyform. The electors may as well in-

sist on its passage finally by thecoming Legislature. They cannotget anything better within two years, and nobody can assure them tboywill get anything as good by waitingthat period.

SETTLED DOWN.

The Advertiser seems to have set-

tled down at last to a definite aim in

the campaign, It makes its fightagainst Mr. Neumann on the NationalReform ticket for Nobles. The Ad-

vertiser knows full w.ell that Mr.Waterhouse cannot be elected, yet itpits him against Mr. Neumann. Itsobject is to defeat Mr, Neumann, evenat the price of electing a Wilcox fol-

lower. This position it cannot evadeby the llimsy device of throwing res-

ponsibility for the success of its ob-

ject on the National Reform party. That trick is simply a cunning em-

ployment of an argument against itsprevious position of supporting twoindependent candidates, which itcould not answer on that occasionbut now dishonestly utilizes. Doesthe Advertiser have the assurance tomake itself believe that any consider-able number of the Noble electoratetake slock in its spiteful assault onMr. Neumann? Brains are not sucha superfluous commodity in our Leg-

islature that the Advertiser can placea man and a legislator of Mr. Neu-niaun- 's

ability under the ban of thebodj' politic by its bull of excommun-ication. The greatest curiosity ofjournalism evolved by the Advertiserthe past few da3's will be very com-

monplace, it may safely be predicted, beside the confession of its blunder-ing that will be due from it nextThursday morning.

AN OPEN LETTER

To Mk. RouEitT W. Wilcox.Honolulu, Jan. 29, 1892.

My Dkau Wilcox :

While your associate Ashford islooking over a few questions andthe public awaits his replies I takethe liberty of giving you a few wordsof advice.

Let me at once assure you that theadvice is better than you have orcould ever receive from your presentcompanions.

Your fondness for appearing inpi hit, and the general all round

of your political record, have rather disposed me to pass youover in silence than to attract the

of decent people to you.A slight incident at the Armory

meeting the other night, however, weighs the balanco in your favor andyou will get the advice and mayyou benefit by it.

It was at your attempted meetingoutside the Armory while "Boodler"Dillingham and the "Missionarygang" were holding forth on the in-

side. Your worthy leader had beenranting away to a lot of your open-ja.we- d

followers about the deadlyMissionary, and the insidious wilesof the railroad builder until thecrowd got sick and choked him offwith cries for "Wilcox I" "Wilcox!"

You arose, and, pointing at oncetowaids a ciowd of noisy opponents, cried out in English: "Don't beMissionary hoodlums try and beMissionuiy gentlemen. " A smile ofenjoyment at your own wit playedupon your lips, and for a momentyou looked quite a gentleman, andcertainly the supeiior of the shiftlessloafers about you. The snarling, ranting, lying, treacherous dose thathad been received by the crowd wusfor a moment forgotten.

A man who can look the gentlemanonce, friend Wilcox, can look it, andnot only look it, but be it always. The stuff is in him. It rests withhimself to bring it out.

You have started off wrong youare partly to blame and Gibson therest. You were educated at the ex-

pense of this Government, but so far

thti oced sceths lo have fallen In verypoor soilsoil that sprouts big1

weeds, big empty cabbages, butnothing substantial or useful.

Your head swelled to such largedimensions while in Italy, that whenyou came back you wanted the king-dom and have been wanting for itever since. They tell mo now, how-

ever, that you are willing to dividewith Ashford, and possibly a fewothers.

The time will come, my boy, whenyour wants will be so small, andyour head will have so shrunk thatyou will be willing to turn in andearn an honest living. And nowwe have reached the point of mystory: Go to work. My dear fel-

low, you talk about making nowConstitutions, dividing up other peo-

ple's lands, establishing paper cur--

icncy, and doing all kinds of non-

sensical things with a gllbness thatis amusing. You can't do it. It isall rot, and if you think you can itonly pioves that you are simply anignoramus.

What 'do you know about makingConstitutions? Why put you, Ash-

ford, Ross, Malic, Thomas and Gayat work making Constitutions, andin a week you would all bo makingbrick for Thomas, catching fish forMalic, or punching cows for Gay.

An element is needed for makingConstitutions which doesn't exist inthe crowd bruins; straight brains, not crooked brains. So, my boyUo to wow.

If you really know anything aboutmilitary matters, go to Guatemala orChile. But if you are man enough, you can find work enough here. Eventhe "Missionary Gang" would giveyou a show if you went about it inearnest and showed that you were notafraid of work. Between you andme, u fellow who is afraid of work isgenerally a poor hand to luce gunpowder.

You don't really take much stockin this man Ashford, do you? Why,no "haole" in this country hates the"kanaka" as much as Ashford does.He hated you openly and above boardbefore the revolution of 1887, and,to show his opinion of your courage,it was his open boast that fifty whitemen could "wipe all the d ned ka-

nakas off the Island." He despisesyou all now, and just as soon as heis done with you somebody will fallinto the soup. You arc no longer aleader. You have boen tried andfound wanting. Ashford is on tiialnow. Give him a fair show, but keepan eye on him.

Above all thou poor, restless, misguided foolish - ? shake offyour bad companions and heed theadvice of the sage.

Diogknes.

AN ASHFORD ADVOCATE.

Editor Bulletin:Mr. Thos. Wright warmly advo-

cates the election of Mr. Ashford, and argues that all "white" mecha-nics should vote for him in prefer-ence to Mr. Dillingham. Mr. Wrightsays that the profits of the plantersmust be cui tailed ; that they are fill-

ing the country with slave labor thatwill eventually banish all whitemechanics. Mr. Wright expressesdeep sympathy for the aforesaidmechanics. The wages of wagonmakers in Honolulu range from $4.50to 85.00 per day. Mr. Wright em-

ploys only the descendants of plan-tation laborers at very low wages, thus competing with other shops thatemploy skilled white labor. He em-

ploys no kanakas. Query : Are Mr.Ashford's expressions of "aloha" forthe downtrodden native and the whilemechanic as sincere as the politicalclap-tra- p of Mr. Thos. Wright?

"GerfnanSyrup"

The majority of well-rea- d phydIcians now believe that Consump-tion is a germ disease. In otherwords, instead of being in the con-stitution itself it is caused by innu-merable small creatures living in thelungs having no business there andeating them away as caterpillars do

the leaves of trees.A Gorm The phlegm that is

coughed up is thoseDisease. parts of the lungs

which have beengnawed off and destroyed. Theselittle bacilli, as the germs are called, are too small to be seeu with thenaked eye, but they are very muchalive just the same, and enter thebody in our food, in the air webreathe, and through the pores ofthe skin. Thence they get into theblood and finally arrive at the lungswhere they fasten and increase withfrightful rapidity. Then GermanSyrup comes in, loosens them, killsthem, expells them, heals the placesthey leave, and so nourish andsoothe that, in a short time consump-tives become germ-proo- f and well.

THE LUAU.

The luau given in the Palace yardwas the largest native feast evergiven here, modernly, unless theKalakaua coronation luau be except-ed a question that present deponentis not in a position to decide. Therewere seats in the lanai for about 600persons, and the feast lasted from3:30 to 5:30. Then there was asmaller lanai, holding from 100 to200, devoted to aged people and chil-

dren. Allowing half an hour forrelays on the average, there musthave been from 3000 to 400G people, who brought keen appetites to bearon the inexhaustible supplies.

Col. John Richardson of II. AI.'sstaff and lion. W. II. Rice of Kauaihad general supervision of the luau.Their great experience in such tilingswas not discredited by the result. Itwas suprising to find, even at the fagend of the feast, that fresh arrivalsof caters could be waited on withfair promptness. There was a trans-portation corps hard ut work all thetime between the service shed andthe lanai, carrying in fresh piles ofdishes cooked in the natie style andcarrying out the remains of finishedrepasts. As to the feast itself, it isenough to say it was a luau of thebest. Residents and visitors willunderstand this ; others will have tolearn it otherwise than from printeddescriptions.

There were five bullocks, fifteenhogs and twenty-tw- o pigs slaughter-ed for the feast. What the quantityand the variety of food drawn fromthe ocean and from the soil, or thesize of ship the ginger ale and sodawater would float, could not be ascer-tained. The supplies came from allthe islands of the group, some ofthem as gifts to tlte Queen. HerMajesty and suite initialed the feast-ing, seated nt a crescent-shape- d

range of tables at the head of thelanai. Bishop Willis offered prayerbefore the eating. The lawn wasdotted with marriuees for post-prandi- al

rest and refreshment. Therewas an animated scene on the groundswith the hundreds of grouped andstraggling people.

The Royal 'Band, conducted byProf. Bergert played, with very shortintervals, from 0, in the morning till0 in the evening. What is anythingwithout the band? Everybody washappily disappointed Unit the threat-ening weather of the moiuing didnot materialize, but kept a'.oot frominterference with any of the eventslaid down for the day's celebration.

God Save tiii. Quken.
