General Dentistry
Dentistry has long suffered a miserable reputation filled with drills, molds, and metal hooks. Fortunately modern dental technology, and a new process called CAD/CAM, is taking a lot of the pain out of a once difficult and uncomfortable process.Utilizing CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) technology, dentists use computer imaging to design and manufacture the intricate surfaces of inlays, onlays, crowns and bridges used in dental restorations. The computer creates a fractal image of the patient’s teeth to make a “map’ of the surface to be restored. The resulting specifications are then used to produce seamless dental fittings. The porcelain ceramics used in the manufacturing process create high strength and natural looking dental work.In addition to a perfect fit and natural looking results, another advantage of the CAD/CAM technology is
the time cut from the old process of creating aphysical mold, and then fitting a temporary crown for the patient to wear for a week while waiting for the permanent crown to be manufactured. If the CAD/CAM equipment is on site, permanent crowns can be measured, fabricated and manufactured while the patient waits. Being fast and painless is not the reputation for which dental work is known – but technology is changing that for the better. If you are looking for a more natural appearance to your dental work, including crowns, inlay, onlay, veneer or bridge, then talk to your dentist about the advantages of CAD/CAM technology, and whether or not you are a candidate.

High-intensity interval training (HIIT), or sprint interval training, is an exercise strategy that uses short, intense sessions to improve over all performance.
Interval training's start-and-stop motions, with periods of sprinting or close-to-sprinting speeds, followed by light jogging or rest are an excellent way to condition athletes. The high-intensity bursts with lower overall effort is an affective cardio program which keeps the body burning calories long after the workout is over.
What’s more, recent studies have shown that as little as two weeks of HIIT can substantially improve insulin action in young, healthy men. So HIIT may be useful in the prevention of type-2 diabetes.
FitMemphis founder and publisher Drew Roberson – a former collegiate 400/800 meter runner – shares some of his most grueling (and affective) HIIT workouts.
I’ve performed these HIIT workouts on the track, on the street, in a park, and on a golf course. They are pretty short, so intensity of the work interval is the key. This first rest/pause time trial was designed by Rolf Krumann and Paul Schmidt of Germany to help 400-meter runners moving up to 800 meters get in some quality distance work, to which they aren’t accustomed. This workout helped me to gain some much needed overall conditioning. It could benefit anyone looking to get fit quickly.
“...HIIT may be useful in the prevention of type-2 diabetes.”
2 minutes (1 minute rest) 4 minutes (1 minute rest) 6 minutes (1 minute rest) 4 minutes (1 minute rest)2 minutes:The intervals are run at a medium hard pace. You can manipulate the intervals anyway you want. For example, I prefer to do: 2 minutes (1 minute rest)3 minutes (1 minute rest) 4 minutes (1 minute rest) 3 minutes (1 minute rest) 2 minutes.
One minute hard (1 minute easy):First, always, warm up (for me, usually a mile run) and then nail 1 minute hard; followed by an easy 1 minute jog.In my younger days, I tried to maintain a 60–70 second, 400-meter pace for the 1 minute hard interval. Now, my goal is to not vomit in front of my neighbors. It is a basic running workout, but is brutally affective – the most I ever did was six sets. Some distance runners can do it all day. Most people will see a benefit from as little as 2–3 sets.
Three minutes medium: 1 minute hard: 10 seconds all out:The creator of this workout, Loren Seagrave, claims it hits all three energy systems. I think he means the lactic acid, glycogen system, and oxygen system, but don’t quote me. An example would be: 3 minute jog at 8 minute mile pace;1 minute run at 4–4:30 mile pace; 10 seconds, all out.The 10 second burst after 1 minute hard is a real gut check, and it sets you up for a challenging 3 minute recovery into the next set. The most I’ve ever done of this is about six sets, covering about three miles. Anybody could get a good workout from as little as 2–3 sets.

Do as many reps as possible in 20 seconds.Rest 10 seconds.Repeat seven times.Very intense, very affective, and very brief. Some of the most popular exercises are body weight squats or front squats, as well as push-ups or alternating push-ups and step-ups. As a weight training exercise, you’ll want to go light on the weights for a workout this intense. The dead lift – Tabata style – is a good way to hurt yourself.
As an running workout, you’ll want to do a warm-up jog of anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes, then stretch until your heart rate returns to 100 beats per minute. At that point, perform the protocol.
Nearly every rep exercise known to man has been tried with varying degrees of success. Just start out easy and find what works best for you.
“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.”
Tabata workouts have become one of the most popular workouts in the world over the last five years. It is a high intensity version of simple, honest drills that are brutally affective for weight loss and stamina.
The protocol gets its name from Dr. Izumi Tabata at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo, Japan. Dr. Izumi conducted a six-week study comparing the affects of moderate intensity endurance (aerobics) and high endurance intermittent training (Tabata training intervals) on VO2 max (maximum lung capacity) and anaerobic capacity.
With both groups working five days a week, the moderate intensity group increased VO2 max by about 10%, with little to no affect on anaerobic capacity. The high intensity group improved VO2 max by 14% with improved anaerobic capacity of 28%.
Originally a Japanese speed skating workout, Tabata is a very flexible protocol, and nearly any exercise done in reps can be used. Be warned, just because it is simple, does not mean it is easy.

Sinusitis is one of the most common chronic health problems in the United States, affecting some thirty seven million Americans. A new, clinically proven and minimally invasive procedure makes relief easy as a tiny balloon. Sinusitis patients typically suffer from headaches, congestion, drainage, and fatigue. The daily toll of these symptoms can seriously impact a person’s physical, functional, and emotional quality of life. Traditionally, sinusitis patients were treated with medical therapy, or conventional sinus surgery known as Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery – in which the removal of tissue and bone to open up blocked sinus passageways. A new technology for treating chronic sinus disease called Balloon Sinuplasty offers a new alternative to invasive surgery and long recovery times. The procedure utilizes a small flexible balloon catheter, placed through the nasal passage, to quickly and gently open the sinus passageway, restoring normal drainage and function without the removal of tissue and bone. Balloon Sinuplasty results in less postoperative discomfort and faster recovery times. Multiple studies have confirmed the safety and efficacy of Balloon Sinuplasty. An international, multi-center study, CLEAR1,published in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery2, confirmed the efficacy and safetyof the procedure. The CLEAR study reported: • 91.6% functional patency rate at one year3
• No serious adverse events at two years4
• Symptom improvement for 85% of patients across the two year postoperative period5
Sinusitis patients who are considering theiroptions can learn more about Balloon Sinuplasty by contacting DeSoto ENT for an evaluation by one of our experienced physicians and by visiting www.balloonsinuplasty.com1The Clinical Evaluation to Confirm Safety and Efficacy in the Paranasal Sinuses (CLEAR) – multi-center, prospective, non-randomized study.2Bolger, W., et al, Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery 2007; 137:10-20.3Kuhn, FA., et al, Balloon Catheter Sinusotomy: One–year follow-up, Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery 2008; 139, S27-S37.4Weiss, RL., et al, Long-term outcome analysis balloon catheter sinusotomy, Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery 2008: 139, S38-S46.5As reported by patients using SNOT-20.
