GATHERING AROUND GOD’S WORD

Introit

*Call to Worship How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts!

My soul longs, indeed it faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh sing for joy to

the living God.

Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself where she may lay her young, at your

altars, O Lord of hosts.

Happy are those who live in your house, ever singing your praise.

*Hymn 220 (Glory to God Sampler 20) All People That on Earth Do Dwell *Call to Confession *Prayer of Confession Holy God, we have tamed your words. We have grown so accustomed to the comfort provided by your teachings that we dismiss the radical nature of your message. We have sanitized your teachings so that we are rarely ever offended by the call to faith, much less caught off guard by the magnitude of what we are called to do in this world, or the way that we are called to live in response to the needs of others. Forgive our timid way of Christian life. Help us to hear the true nature of the gospel this day, O God, and let the Spirit light a fire within us to truly be transformed by Christ’s radical call of discipleship. Time for silent confession. And all God's people said: Amen.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD

*Creed The Creed, adapted by members of FPC

We believe in God, the Father Almighty, and in Jesus Christ, His Son, our Lord, and in the Holy Spirit. We seek to know God's will, to walk in God's ways, and to proclaim the Gospel to all people, by our lives as well as by our words. We work and pray for the progress of knowledge, the promotion of justice, the reign of peace, and the realization of human unity in our time. And we look with faith for the triumph of righteousness in our community and in our world. Amen.

Summer Choir Reminder that choir will meet at 9:00 a.m. on Sundays instead of Thursday for a short re-hearsal before worship at 10:00 (Thursday rehearsals will resume September 6). All wel-come! All ages and levels of experience are encouraged to come when you can. We will learn the introit and psalm for the day, and perhaps an easy anthem. Also, let me know if you are willing and able to offer an anthem in worship, as a soloist or part of an ensemble. I have lots of music for duets, trios, etc, and singers who enjoy singing in a small group. Come by the choir room to browse through music (or bring your own) and select a date. Instrumentalists are also welcome! The Guitar Workshop is meeting on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. in the Choir Room. The Guitar Workshop is led by Steve James, who provides instruction for both guitar and bass guitar, as well as conversation on a number of music topics. All skill levels are taught, beginner to ad-vanced. New members are always welcome. For more information, please contact Steve James at 705-0742 or Randy Pietrzak at 310-7808. .

Announcements Continued -

An Oak Ridge Community Prayer Service will be held on Sunday, September 16 at 6:30 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church (Turnpike at Lafayette). Singers and instrumental-ists from several area churches are participating, including Grace Lutheran Church, First

United Methodist Church, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Unitarian Universalist Church, and First Presbyterian Church. The public is invited to attend the service.

Holden Evening Prayer was written by Marty Haugen (b 1960) while he was musician-in-residence at Holden Village in 1985-1986. Holden Village is a year-round Lutheran Chris-

tian Center in the North Cascade Mountains of Washington, and is the largest retreat cen-ter in the nation. His lovely setting of vespers follows the traditional form while using con-temporary and inclusive language.

Sunday, August 26th following the 10 a.m. worship service, youth and their families are in-vited to head an hour North to Kentucky Splash for an afternoon of fun, fellowship and water slides. Cost is $15 ($10 admission to Kentucky Splash and $5 towards gas costs). Friends can be invited, but a health form/consent form and youth covenant must be in Hannah's hand be-fore we leave the FPC parking lot. We will be back at the church by 5:30 p.m.

Members of Grace Covenant Church invite community friends to a gathering on Monday eve-ning, August 27 to discuss the formation of a friendship group for people who are LGBT or who desire to be supportive of friends and family who are LGBT. Initiated by three LGBT mem-bers of our congregation with the support of the church’s ministers and council, we anticipate something on the order of a monthly gathering for fellowship and conversation about issues and concerns confronting people who are LGBT. Although the group will be welcome to meet on a continuing basis at Grace Covenant, if the group desires, gatherings may be rotated among the various congregations of those participating.

The first meeting will be at 6:30 p.m., Monday, August 27 in the library at Grace Covenant Church at Trinity, 320 Robertsville Road. Please park in the upper parking lot and enter the building through the doors of the drive-through. The library will be just around the corner to your left after you enter the building. For more information call 865-483-6752.
