Blessed to be a Blessing! As this goes to printing our annual stewardship drive is coming to a close. We hope that you have had a chance to reflect on the joy that comes with giving and sharing in your stewardship of God’s bless-ings to you. Many of you reading this have already returned your cards and renewed your commitment to share the blessings God has grant-ed. On behalf of the stewardship commission, the church council and leadership I would like to say thank you for your commitment and gener-osity. If you haven’t had time yet to fill out your card, it’s not too late to send it in or, if you prefer to stop by the church office and submit your pledge for the next year. Time flies and Thanksgiving is soon upon us. We all have mem-ories of sharing good food, comfort, and the blessings of family that come with the holiday season. It should come as no surprise that most churches, as well as other non-profit and charitable institutions, receive a large portion of their annual donations during this time. If you read the financial report elsewhere in these pages, we are behind in our budget-ary goals for giving this year. The year is not over however so can we all come together and “go the extra mile” in the next few months and we can reach our goal. This is especially important as we work on the budg-et for next year, as we base much of it on the previous year’s giving. We are all members of First Lutheran Church because we be-lieve the church has an important role in renewing and strengthening our faith and in spreading the Gospel of Christ to others. Our church pro-vides a place for us to come together to worship, to renew our faith, and to provide a springboard to spread that message into the world. We hope that you will all take a minute or two to pray and renew your com-mitment to share your time, talents, and treasures to further the mission of First Lutheran Church. ~ Steve Schulz, for the Stew-

Rejoice in the Lord! Dear Friends in Christ,

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than

the one who is in the world. (I John 4:4)

Recently I have been meditating on this verse again. The context of this verse is the Apostle encouraging us to recognize what messages (thoughts, ideas) are from God, and those that are not from God (i.e., from the world, the sin-ful self or the evil one). In God, we find inspiration, truth and life. The key is acknowledging Jesus Christ (I John 4:2).

An old song, based on this verse, goes, “Greater is He that is in me; Greater is He that is in me; Greater is He that is in me, than He that is in the world.” I have found it very helpful to let it waft through my consciousness when I have faced negative thoughts, temptation or weariness. It acknowledges the presence of Jesus in my life. And in that reality, He strengthens, blesses and gives me confidence! So, I would recommend this verse to you as a way of ac-knowledging Jesus in your life. If, in case, you don’t know if Jesus is in your life, simply invite Him in through prayer. In Revelation 3:20, Jesus says, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”

I hope you all will participate in one of the congregation informational meetings coming up on Sundays, Nov. 8 & 15, and Thursday, Nov. 12. Then, our FLC Church Council has called for a congregation meeting on Sunday, Nov. 22, in or-der to move forward with electing a Call Committee for the Associate Pastor position.

In these last two months of the year, please, faithfully and joyfully give your generous tithes and offerings to First Lu-theran Church. They are needed!

May the Lord direct our steps together.

MUSICAL NOTES MUSICAL NOTES (cont.) In Isaiah 49: 15b-16, we are assured by God, that although others may forget us, He will NOT! He goes on to say "See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands." What blessed assurance! We ARE in the palm of God's hands. He made us. He sustains us. He loves us. He protects us. He guides us--when we let Him. HE HEALS US. HE gives us the path to Eternal Life-Eternal Light-Everlasting Heaven! WOW! We should not have to go through health scares or medical issues or trials of any kind to realize that God is always there. In my recent hospital stay, I honestly did ask God, "Where are You? I need You!". He was there all the time. Even in the darkest night, He is there and His grace comes through when all else fails. Alleluia! God's mighty grace planted seeds of inspiration for a song in my heart. It is called "In the Palms of His Hands". I am working on the music and the lyrics and will share the song soon. Meanwhile, the Body of Christ in Albert Lea, MN, known as First Lutheran Church, has been very, very good to me. In 2013, you took me in when I was a stranger. You have essentially housed me-fed me-accepted me-loved me. Now, as I have begun my third year here, you have also helped me, comforted me, and prayed for me at a time of a serious medical issue. Saying thank you is not enough. From the bottom of my heart, I want you all to know that your caring hearts, love, support, nurture, and prayers keep me going-every day! There are ups and downs in life, but when you have God and the people of First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea in your corner, you are on SOLID GROUND. If God is for us, who can be against us? Right? Praise His Holy Name!

Report from... “Happiness Is A Blanket”

On October 10, 2015, the “Happiness Is A Blanket” quilters sent 168 quilts on the Lutheran World Relief Van.

During the year we also have given the Salvation Army 8 quilts, 5 throws, 20 afghans, and 16 baby quilts, and donated 2 quilts to the Good Earth Village Quilt Auction.

We want to thank all the quilters and people who have donated to this project. We can always use fabric, drapes, quilt fill, thread, bedding, (including sheets, and pillowcases) blankets, quilts, com-forters, bedspreads, bed skirts, and mattress pads.

We welcome anyone interested in helping with the quilting. We meet on Tuesday mornings from 8-10:30. You do not need to know how to sew as there are various steps to make a quilt.

If you have any questions call Audrey Christensen 373-2770 or Bonnie Trampel 373-1665.

International Survivors of Suicide Loss Event The International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day is one day a year when people affected by suicide loss gather in their local communities to find comfort and gain understanding as they share stories of healing and hope. The loss of a loved one from suicide is painful and is a challenging grief journey. For many loss survivors, attending a Survivor Day event is an opportunity to discover that they are not alone in their experi-ence of losing someone they know and love to suicide. For those who are unable to attend an event in person, the American Foun-dation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) hosts a Survivor Day program online at survivorday.org. A local International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day event will be held in Albert Lea on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at Bon-nerup Funeral Services, 2210 E Main Street at 1:00 PM. There is no charge for this event. This year’s program will include a local panel of survivors and a screening of Family Journeys: Healing and Hope after Suicide, a new documentary produced by the AFSP that traces the ripple effect of a suicide through families and communities, and explores the challenges we face as we cope and heal. You are invited to join with a community of suicide loss sur-vivors to find comfort and gain understanding as we share stories of healing and hope. To learn more about the International Survi-vors of Suicide Loss Day, visit survivorday.org. To ask about the local event or to register call Judy Popp-Anderson at 507-373-2461 or e-mail [email protected].

Upcoming Healing Prayer Class Level 1 One third of Jesus’ ministry was dedicated to healing peo-ple. Yet, in the church I find many people think in terms of black and white when talking about prayer. They think if they pray for healing and it doesn’t happen as they thought it should, God didn’t want healing for that person. This simply isn’t true. God takes de-light in bringing healing to His creation. There are many dimen-sions to prayer, the first one being: God is the one who heals. Sec-ond, God loves you His created, and longs to heal. Third, we are God’s vessels to bring healing to each other. If you have been drawn to understand healing prayer in greater depth, please come to this class. On November 15, I will offer a presentation to help you understand some of the things we will cover in the Healing Prayer class. Reverend Joel Erickson and I will start a healing prayer Level I class in January. ~Pastor Diane Odermann

The Special Outreach Cause offerings for November is:

Noisy Offering for the Salvation Army Food Shelf. This will be received during worship on Sunday, November 8,

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT FLC?

EVANGILISM with MUFFINS & Y.F.C.! Many FLC members have heard the need for muffin donations

to support Youth For Christ's Middle School programming. Dee-Ann Bergland has provided an update for us:

“Things are going amazing! For those of you who don't know, Youth For Christ is conducting programming in rented space at Southwest every Wednesday morning. They serve muffins to the students who show up, and give a lesson on how Christ fits into their lives and all the good news that comes with loving and knowing him.

Weekly attendance at "Wednesday Morning Breakfast Club" has been outstanding! The program has seen over 212 differ-ent students this year, and attendance at single sessions has been as large as 160 Youth For Christ also has programming in the High School and a couple of the Elementary schools!”

The evangelism commission will be launching a more coordinated effort to provide donated muffins from congregation member's kitchens to the breakfast club serving platters. They need around 15 dozen muffins each week to make sure there are enough to go around. Please watch for an opportunity to help with this amazing

ministry of Youth For Christ. ~The FLC Evangelism Commission

Thank you to Ginny Thompson for the diligence in producing the

2015 First Lutheran Church Directory together with Janice Hammer, the Life and Growth Commission and volunteers who registered members at the photo sessions. Months of work and organization were involved to result in the final directory.

When you need prayer...Call the prayer chain coordina-tors, Jo Hanson 763-257-9018 or Julia Tonder 373-9594

All prayer requests are handled confidentially.

To support people at the time of illness or injury we pastors do make personal visits in the hospital, homes or Care Centers. We occasion-ally check local hospital lists, but sometimes names do not show up on the list. So, please, call, if you want us to know. Do not hesitate to call the church [373-6424], if you have not seen a pastor and would like to request a visit. We try to be available in emergencies. ‘After hours’ the church phone system will automatically put your call through to the pastor ‘on call’ by keying #3. We ask permission before we include a name on our printed prayer list. Please let us know if you want to be on the list or be visited.

~ Your FLC Pastors
