Bishop and cabinet announce reduced number of districts with new boundaries and names by Lane Gardner Camp, Director of Communications

The Memphis Conference of The United Methodist Church (West Tennessee and Western Kentucky) set new district boundaries and names effective April 23, according to an announcement by Bishop William T. (Bill) McAlilly and the conference’s district superintendents. The Memphis Conference is an area that includes 421 churches (269 charges) in West Tennessee and Western Kentucky. The new district configuration reduces the number of districts from seven to five and down to four by June 2016. New district names also are part of the changes.

To help explain the changes, below is a Q&A with Rev. Sky McCracken, superintendent of the Paducah District (being renamed Purchase District) and newly named dean of the Memphis Conference cabinet. QUESTION: Why are we making these changes at this time? ANSWER: The cabinet realizes we must begin now to live into the changes decided at the 2014 Memphis Annual Conference. These

immediate changes in number, boundaries and names of districts allow time for complete and seamless execution by June 2016. We know the transition will be less than perfect, but this action at this time gives us 14 months to address questions and any unintended consequences. This is not about our districts, but about how the Memphis Conference will be organized to best carry out its mission of offering Christ to a hurting world.

Reprinted with permission from the Circuit Writer Memphis Conference newsletter (memphis-umc.net)

Beginning April 23, 2015, the Memphis Conference is composed of FIVE districts: Metro-Asbury, Metro-McKendree, Mississippi River, Purchase and Tennessee River.

We are in the process of reorganizing teams for our home communion servers. It is a once a quarter commitment, which entails a visit with some of our shut-ins and serving them communion.
