Getting Better Acquainted With Our Members

by Bobbie Mays Director of Communications

Scott Murray’s family has a longtime and active history with Jackson FUMC. His grandparents who moved from Mississippi to Jackson, TN in the early 50’s raised their family in First United Methodist Church so Scott’s dad, Truman, grew up in this church. His mom, Judy, from Knoxville, was raised in a Catholic family. Early on in their marriage they attended a Catholic church. After they had their three sons, they knew they wanted to be where they could participate in Sunday School and children’s programs. His family joined First United Methodist Church when Scott was in kindergarten and his brothers, Doug and Mike, whom he affectionately refers to as the “Murray Twins,” were one year old.

Sunday School, children’s and youth programs were an important part of Scott’s life. What he learned in his early childhood through high school is a lot of what he draws on today in understanding God in relation to church. As a youth, he was asked to serve on the music committee which allowed him to see how church members work together to carry out a ministry. Participating in Sunday SchoolandConfirmationclassesprovidedthe spiritual guidance to learn and ask questions to build the foundation to further strengthen his Christian and Methodist beliefs.

After Scott graduated from Jackson Central-Merry in 1992, he attended Middle Tennessee State in Murfreesboro for the next four years. During that time, he became involved in the Wesley Foundation and, as a sophomore, met his cute, fun-lovin’ and vivacious future wife, Rhonda Reeves. Both enjoyed drama and music and were very active in theatrical and choir productions serving as a part of the Clown Troupe. Mission trips to Oklahoma, fun times in

homecoming parades and outreach to area churches were a few of the opportunities they enjoyed. Scott worked on sets and Rhonda used her sewing skills to make costumes. Their college life through the Wesley Foundation offered each of them a wonderful place for friendship, fellowship, worship and for learning in a “hands-on” way how to serve Christ in ministry together. With nearly forty others, they regularly attended worship services on Sunday and Wednesday evenings. On Sunday mornings, the group ventured out to various churches to sing in choir performances and to participate in drama productions, adding another dimension to the worship service.

Both Rhonda and Scott worked while going through college. Rhonda’s thirty- hour work week as a waitress while carrying a full course load each semester really kept her busy. Scott chuckled and shared he “fried a lot of donuts, delivered prescriptions and did odd jobs” while studying and completing his academic studies. In 1997, Scott graduated with a BS in Mass Communications with an emphasis in digital animation. While searching for work, he spent a short period in Nashville in production assistance with music videos. He also began a six month study at a technical school to acquire advanced IT skills. Following Rhonda’s graduation in 1998 with a BS in Special Education, they married on June 27th that summer. She continued her education going straight through to get a Master’s Degree also in Special Education.

Rhonda taught Gifted and Resource (all Special Ed) in Murfreesboro City Schools

until 2004, when they moved to Jackson where Scott was hired by Jackson Energy Authority during the E-Plus “Fiber to the Home” telecommunications build out. He eventually moved into technical positions and ended up in the Information Technology Department for JEA.

At the same time, Rhonda worked with the GEMS program for gifted students at JMCSS with Paula Butler as her supervisor from 2004-05. Their next big venturewasthepurchaseoftheirfirsthome in the LANA neighborhood which was also the beginning of their renovation project. Soon after, they learned they weregoingtohavetheirfirstbaby.Together they exclaimed, “we had only ninemonthstogetthishousefinished!”When Olivia was born, Rhonda became a stay at home/work at home mother, and two years later Emma was born. Enjoying her role as mom, she also was looking for ways to supplement their income doingwhatsheloved…sewing!Togethershe and Toni Camp created “Sew Sassy Originals,” designing clothing for children including monograms and accessories, a business they maintained until returning to the classroom in August of 2013.

Shortly after they moved into their new home, one of their neighbors, J.V. Thompson, told them about his Sunday School class at Jackson FUMC. Scott and Rhonda had joined the church after they arrived in Jackson where they enjoyed attending the First Awakening worship service. But, they were so busy at the time with their careers and a new home, that they hadn’t yet gotten involved in a class. So when J.V. extended the

Rhonda, Scott, Emma, and Olivia Murray

Page 9: First Edition Newsletter - March 20, 2013

First Edition March 20, 2013 page 9

invitation to come to the Good Goats class, they began attending and grew to love it. Eight years later, not only have they become active members of that class, but they each have discovered additional areas of meaningful ministry through Bible studies, Wednesday Evening Fellowship, and other activities.

For Scott and Rhonda, both feel a commitment to give back through their talents, presence, gifts and prayers. “It’s important to take ownership with the church and to have community in faith.” Through Scott’s involvement in teaching members how to get plugged in and connected with the church through the Spiritual Gifts Inventory (check this out on the church website at jacksonfumc.org),hesawfirst-handhowpeopleweresometimes amazed at the talents and gifts God had given them for which they were unaware.

One of Scott’s favorite studies since being a member here has been Disciple I. “Going through the entire Bible as the “whole story” opened my eyes for a greater in-depth understanding of scripture. He would really like to see more Disciple studies offered by the church so that he and others can grow even deeper in their faith and relationship to God.

Rhonda has always had a keen interest in Children’s Ministry. As a child, her family, strong Methodists, attended a small church in Goose Pond where she and her sister, Jamie, grew up just outside Manchester, TN. The church had a total membership of around fourty, so there were no children’s programs or activities

available. Not until she was older did they move their membership to Manchester FUMC where she was so excited to join the youth group for activities. Now, as mom to two daughters, Olivia, 7 and Emma, 5, she is even more interested in children’s programming offered at Jackson FUMC where she has enjoyed serving on the Children’s Council, helping in VBS, participating and leading Mom’s on Mondays, sewing Little Dresses for Girls in Africa, and serving as one of three founding leaders of the Girl Scout Daisy/Brownie Troop # 43088 sponsored by the church. She has also found parenting classes, Bible studies, Soul Sisters events and the Women’s Retreats as other avenues that have nurtured her life.

Together, Scott and Rhonda appreciate the variety of opportunities at their church. They enjoy not only their community of faith but activities with “villages of families” in their neighborhood and beyond. They love having friends in and planning spontaneous family activities such as pumpkin carvings. A Mardi Gras Parade for Kids has become an annual event for the Murrays that they helped spearhead and coordinate as a part of downtown Jackson. Scott enjoys working with the LANA Community Victory Garden, initiated by retired Lambuth art professor, Lendon Noe, a passion that he and some neighbors have enjoyed each spring and summer as they plan and care for the garden together. That experience in turn led to his active involvement with the Jackson Community Gardens (JCG) sponsored in part by FUMC.

“Bringing faith into everyday life” is what Rhonda and Scott Murray are all about. This is their life. They participate, they lead, they serve, they give back, they pray and they look to God for guidance and direction each day. It’s those “natural times of discovering God moments” through their church, family and friends that enrich, inspire and sustain them daily.

We are pleased to introduce our Habitat recipient family, Shanda Crayton and her son, Antonio. Shanda is employed by Support Solutions, working in a group home for adults. She assists these adults with recreational activities, learning life skills, and taking them shopping. Shanda has enjoyedthispositionforfiveyears.Antonio, who is eleven years old, is in the 6th grade at North East Middle School. He enjoys playing basketball and is looking forward to the construction of his new home!

Although Shanda has been in Jackson since 1998, she is originally from Greenville, Mississippi where her mother and her sister are also Habitat recipients. Shanda helped them both in the building of their homes and is looking forward to having her friends and family come be a part of her own home construction! Shanda and Antonio attend Deliverance House of Prayer.

At completion, Shanda will have 500 hours of “sweat equity” invested in her home. She has already earned over 100 hours and continues to

work toward her goal. She is attending classes on budgeting, home maintenance, etc. and meeting with her Nurturer, our own Bettye Labry, who will help answer questions and offer any support she may need through this process. Of course, we will also see Shanda, Antonio and their friends and family on the work site as well!

We are excited to get to know Shanda and Antonio better as we work side by side in the building of their home. Please introduce yourself and take a minute to visit with them!

It’s finally time! Join us atHabitat House Kick Off Saturday, March 23rd at 972 East College Street!

This will be Jackson’s 101st Habitat House. It is the 18th house FUMC has had the privilege to be a part of and it willbethefinalhomebuiltinHabitatMeadows. A blessing of prayer will surround this site all day on Saturday beginning just before 8:00 a.m. Our recipient family’s Pastor will be there with a few opening remarks and a blessing as the building starts. The work crew will break for lunch at noon. Around 12:30-12:45 p.m. Mary Beth and Dan will help with a short prayer service. There will be a few remarks from them, followed by a community reader/response community prayer. We would like to encourage as many members of FUMC to attend this service and show our support and belief in this effort for the family who will live in this home.

Please DON'T pass the salt!!Saltcausesourbodiestoretainfluid, making our hearts work harder. An overworked heart is not a good thing - it doesn't become stronger like the muscles in our arms and legs - it becomes enlargedandflabby.Highbloodpressure, heart disease, and stroke follow a tired heart. 1500 mg of Sodium (the ingredient in salt) is the recommended daily allowance for adults. As Americans, we average DOUBLE this amount.

An easy way to keep up with your intake is to read nutrition labels to avoid high sodium foods. Take salt shakers off the table, and discourage youngsters from adding salt to foods. Eat fresh when possible and avoid fast foods. If you must salt your food, sprinkle a little in your hand and add to your dish. Don't pour from the shaker. Your heart will thank you!
