Pete Whitman: Saxophone, Flute, and ClarinetPete has toured the US, Japan, and Brazil with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, and is the leader of the
award winning jazz sextet Departure Point. Other credits include: Minnesota Orchestra, Jack McDuff,
Randy Brecker, and the Woody Herman Orchestra. Pete has received both a B.M. and M.M. degrees in
Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas. He heads the Brass & Woodwinds Department at
McNally Smith College of Music.
Gary Gratz: KeyboardsGary has worked with Herb Wigley and Manfredo Fest and performed with
Tony Sandler, Marilyn McCoo and Othello Molineaux. He spent six years performing with the National
Football League, and has scored national commercial spots for Coca Cola, Discover Card, Target and
Porsche. Gary studied both music and electronics at Southwest State University. He heads the
Keyboard Department at McNally Smith College of Music.
Gordy Knudtson: Percussion
Gordy’s touring and recording credits include: Roy Buchanan, Ben Sidran, Patty Austin, Leo Kottke,
Sergio Mendes, Peter Ostroushko, Dave Brubeck, Ernie Watts, Phil Woods, Eddie Harris, Kevin
Mahogany, Diane Schuur, Jack MacDuff, and Chuck Berry. As the drummer for the Steve Miller Band,
he has performed extensively in the US, Europe and Japan, appeared on The Late Show with David
Letterman and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Gordy heads the Percussion Department at McNally
Smith College of Music.

Terry’s extensive performance and recording credits, include: Linda Rondstadt, Dewey Redman, Lee
Konitz, Jane Monheit, Freddy Hubbard, David Benoit, Stanley Turrentine, David "Fathead" Newman,
Billy Hart, Ray Bryant, Billy Higgins, Steve Slagle, and Billy Rodgers. Terry heads the Bass Department
at McNally Smith College of Music.
Dave Jensen: Trumpet Dave Jensen is a member of the Hornheads, a Billboard Award-winning jazz group. The Hornheads
have released two solo albums, and recorded on over fifty albums in the U.S., Argentina, Portugal,
and the U.K, including thirteen albums with Prince and the New Power Generation. Dave’s other
credits include: the Artie Shaw Orchestra, Aretha Franklin, Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole, Frank Sinatra Jr.,
and Rosemary Clooney. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Berklee College of Music. Dave is on the
faculty at McNally Smith College of Music.
Cliff Wittstruck: Guitar Cliff’s performing and recording credits include James Brown and Chet Atkins. He is regularly featured
on the popular public radio program ‘A Prairie Home Companion’. He holds a B.M. degree from
Berklee College of Music and a M.M. from The New England Conservatory of Music in Jazz
Performance. Cliff is head of the Guitar Department at McNally Smith College of Music and co-chair of
the Music Performance division.
Jeff Rinear: Trombone
Jeff has performed with Dionne Warwick, Burt Bacharach, Marilyn McCoo, the Temptations, and toured
extensively with the Artie Shaw Orchestra. He holds a B.M. degree in Trombone Performance from
Berklee College of Music and a second degree in Music Education from the University of Minnesota. He
is on the faculty at McNally Smith College of Music.
workshop program(daily schedule – 10:10 a.m. – 3:50 p.m.)
Ensembles: 90 minutes of daily ensemble reading & improvisation. Styles, grooves and repertoire will be selected according to ensemble level and need. Reading and improvisation are emphasized.
Improvisational theory and strategies: Learn to create effective improvised solos through the study of chords, scales, ‘licks’ and riffs, which can then be applied to tunes studied in ensemble class.
Master Classes: Group master classes meet with a specialist on the following instruments: trumpet, trombone, woodwinds, piano, bass, guitar and drums.
Jazz history symposium/Faculty showcase performances: Study some of the most influential musicians in the history of Jazz. Presentations alternate daily with staff live performances.
Finale Saturday Concert: Open to friends, family and the general public, all ensembles perform the tunes they have studied all week. Performance is recorded live and CD copies are available to workshop participants for a nominal fee.
All levels welcome: teachers and/or students. Applicants should be at least 14 years old and have previous playing experience. Returning participants eligible for discount.
