My name is Flor Tellez and this is your Board Report for December 11, 2012 Shakey's Night • Shakey's night turned out to be a success. Many students and teachers went to support our event. Everyone had a good time and enjoyed their time spent with family and friends. Firebaugh ASB wants to thank Mr. Velasquez and Mr.Gothel for coming and supporting our event. Freshmen Vs Sophomore Pep Rally • Class of 15' and 16' are following up with one of Firebaugh's traditions. They will be having a pep rally that challenges sophomores and freshman against each other in fun games and activities. The purpose of this event is to increase school spirit for our freshman class and sophomore class. • Firebaugh's very first fall play, "Check, Please" debuted last Friday night, and was a huge success! Auditions are already underway for the winter production. The play was organized and produced by Ms. Kate Thomas Drama teacher, and Ms. Han Nguyen. National Hispanic College Fair Field Trip • 84 students attended this trip on, December 5, 2012. The College Fair was held at Cal Lutheran University. Buses were provided courtesy of the NHCF. Shakey's Night

•Shakey's night turned out to be a success. Many students and teachers went to support ourevent. Everyone had a good time and enjoyed their time spent with family and friends.Firebaugh ASB wants to thank Mr. Velasquez and Mr.Gothel for coming and supporting ourevent.

Freshmen Vs Sophomore Pep Rally

Athletics:

•JV Boys' Basketball was victorious against Mary Star of the Sea High School in a homegame on Friday, November 30th. The final score was 40-38. JV also won their way game vs.Buena Park High school on Monday, December 30th. The final score was 52-25.

•Boys' JV Soccer tied 0-0 with Dominguez High School in an away game on Tuesday,December 4tl1

•Boys' Varsitv Soccer was victorious against Dominguez High School on Tuesday,December 4tl with a final score of 3-2. Varsity will also play Colony on Thursday,December 6th.

Upcoming College & Career Center Events:

•Visit from Cal State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) on Thursday, December 6th (bothlunches)

•General Financial Aid Information Session for Parents and Students was on Wednesday,January 9, 2013 at 6:00pm in the Lecture Hall. This session was a general overview offinancial aid options for college, and was presented in both English and Spanish by Cal-SOAP representatives.

•FAFSA Line by Line Presentation will be on Saturday, January 12, 2013 in room 2112.Bilingual staff from Cal-SOAP and FHS will be available to assist parents in completingtheir students' FAFSA forms online.

•Financial Aid for Community College Presentation on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at1:00pm in the Lecture Hall for all community-college bound seniors. This presentation willbe given by staff from El Camino College - Compton Center.

CPR and First Aid Certification

•ASB is working with Inter Driving School is now offering CPR training school wide for alimited time. ASB students received an introduction to CPR training and now are offeringcourses to teachers and administration. Teachers will complete a 2 hour CPR/First Aidworkshop and receive their 2 year certification by the American Health and Safety Institute.The CPR/First Aid training for teachers will be held on Tuesday December 12, andWednesday December 13.

•ASB decided to make it a school wide event because only 1% of America knows CPR andwe would like to change that here at Firebaugh High school. During January, students willbe encouraged to participate in a one hour introduction to CPR course in which students willlearn the first steps into saving somebody's life. Students will learn the right way to call forhelp and the basics of CPR. This course will cost students $5, they will receive a certificateand a button that says "Falcons Save Lives." With this we hope to make our campus saferand make sure that everyone know the correct steps to help save somebody's life.

Blood Drive

•Leo Club will be sponsoring a blood drive this Friday, December 14 at the gym. Leo clubmembers have been working diligently to make sure this blood drive is a success. Studentsand staff have signed up to donate blood. Over 100 students have signed up to donate

Good evening board President Morales, board members, Superintendent Mr. Velasquez,District cabinet members, parents, teachers, students and Lynwood community. I amNathalie Monroy and this is the Lynwood High School student report to the Board forDecember 11, 2012.

FIRST QUARTER RECQGNTIQN ASSEMBLY - On November 28th we held ourfirst recognition assembly of the school year. The school wide assembly took placein the gymnasium. Our students were seated by grade levels, with the awardwinners and performers sitting on the gym floor. Our students were excited andvery spirited throughout the assembly. Our performances include our marchingband, color guard, drill team, dance ensemble and our cheerleaders wearing theirbrand new uniforms. Students recognized were those students that had excelledwithin the first quarter of the school year. Each teacher selected one top studentfrom their class to be recognized. We also recognized our Fall Sports athletes fromFootball, Girls Volleyball, Girls Tennis and Boys and Girls Cross Country. Duringthe assembly we also had the opportunity to recognize two clubs that have createdsome great opportunities for our students to get involved in during this first quarterof the school year. Junior State of America, advisor Mr. Barroso was recognizedfor organizing various interesting debates for our students, two presidential debateviewing and a student mock election. La Raza was also recognized for organizingthe Dia de los Muertos event and a campus clean-up day. With all these amazingthings our students are doing, we are in full swing of a great school year.

COLLEGE APPLICATIONS - Cal State and UC applications have now closed. Wehave preliminary numbers collected by our College and Career center. We have atotal of over 200 students that have applied to the Cal State Universities and over60 students that applied to UCs. Seniors are now working on private schoolapplications. Some of those deadlines are coming up this month.

"YOU CAN GO TQ COLLEGE" WORKSHOP - On Thursday, November 15th, the

Lynwood High School College and Career Center organized a workshop to helpstudents with their college applications, focusing on private schools and out ofstate schools. Information was given to student on how they can attend out of stateschools and still pay in state tuition. We had administrators, counselors andteachers available to help students work on their personal statements andcomplete their applications. There were over 50 students at the workshop.

FINANCIAL AID - Now that the college application process has ended for most ofthe students, Lynwood High School will begin working on helping students applyfor financial aid. The Cash for College overview meeting will take place onThursday, January 17th and the Cash for College workshop will be on Saturday,

January 19th.

WINTER SPORTS - Boys and Girls Soccer and Boys and Girls Basketball are nowin preseason. Our Boys and Girls Basketball team have been doing very well inseveral tournaments and preseason games. The Girls Soccer team is currentlyundefeated. Tomorrow afternoon our Boys Soccer team will take on the FirebaughFalcons in "El Clasico." Game time is at 3 PM on the LHS Stadium.

TOY DRIVE - The On Campus Ministry Club, in collaboration with ASB is holdingthe annual school wide toy drive. We are collecting new, unwrapped toys to helpmake a deserving child smile this holiday season. The toy drive will run fromDecember 3rd to December 14lh.

SENIOR BEST - Whether they are the school's nerdiest senior or the party animalof the class or the senior with the worst case of senioritis, seniors are now runningfor our Senior Best of the Class of 2013. Last week we had self-nominations.Seniors were encouraged to run for at least two categories. Yesterday we beganthe elections. The elections are being held online during lunch. Students can nowdownload an App on their smartphones and vote directly from the App or stop byroom 7101 during lunch and vote on our computers. The App students downloadcan now be used for this and all future elections held at Lynwood High School. Wewill announce our senior best winners in January, after we come back from breakin our Senior Awards Knight.

CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING KNIGHT - We are beginning a new tradition atLynwood High School. Tomorrow night we will host our very own tree lightingceremony at sundown. Beginning at 4 pm our students will decorate our Christmastree in the Quad. Clubs and organizations will be creating their own Christmasornament to hang on the tree. Each class will also be decorating a smallerChristmas tree to represent their class. We will have pan dulce and hot chocolateavailable for our students. We are excited to begin this holiday tradition for our

students.

PARENT MEETINGS - Lynwood High School is hosting parent meetings for eachof the grade levels. We held our senior parent meeting earlier in the school year,as seniors prepared for the college application process. Last week, on Thursday,December 6th we held a parent meeting for 11th graders. With almost 100 parentsin attendance, many important topics were discussed and tons of importantinformation was given out to our parents. Counselors and administrators werepresent to give parents information regarding high school graduation requirements,a-g curriculum and school policies. This week, on Thursday, December 13th we willbe hosting a parent meeting for 9th graders. Our counselors and administrators willprovide similar information to our parents and also give them information on how tohelp their 9th grade students be successful in school. The 10th grade parentmeeting is tentatively scheduled for January 9th, when we come back from WinterBreak. We will also be scheduling 2nd semester parent meetings for all gradelevels.

HEROES of the Month - Beginning with the month of December, ASB is beginninga HEROES of the Month program. Every month, a word will be selected andteachers will be able to select a student that has demonstrated the definition of thatword. The words selected are from our school's ESLRs. December's word is

RESPONSIBILITY. Students will be recognized next week during our morningannouncements.

HOLIDAY SHOWCASE - On Friday, December 14th our Music Department will behosting the annual Holiday Showcase concert. Students and community areinvited to attend an amazing performance by our Lynwood High School PerformingArts. The concert will begin at 7 pm. Admission is free and snacks will be soldduring the show. You are all invited to attend and enjoy our holiday performances.

CAMPUS BEAUTIFICATION - On Saturday, December 15th the Interact Club andthe Squires Club will be hosting a campus clean-up day at LHS. We invite ourcommunity to come out and help beautify Knight City.

LA PASTORELA - MEChA will host a holiday performance of "La Pastorela" onSaturday, December 15th and Sunday, December 16th. This production will be heldin the PAC and it will be free of charge to everyone.

We invite you to attend and make it a family weekend at Lynwood High Schoolwith the Holiday showcase Friday and La Pastorela on Saturday or Sunday.

Good Evening Board Members, President Alfonso Morales, Superintendent Mr. Velasquez,Deputy Superintendent Mr. Gothold, LUSD staff members, and the Lynwood Community,my name is Angela Del Real and I am a Senior at Vista High School and the StudentRepresentative to the Board for the 2012-2013 school year.

Christmas Food Drive: Vista students are donating canned foods and non-perishable items tocollect for the Holidays. The goal is to provide at least 10 families in our community with itemsthat will help them have a great holiday. If anyone would like to donate, you may drop the itemsoff in the front office.

Tzu-Chi Foundation: The Tzu-Chi foundation sponsored a holiday gift basket which includedspecialty items such as blankets, toys and a $100 Visa Gift card to 4 of our Vista families. Thefoundation visited our school and met with recipient families in a special reception.

Blood Drive: Vista will sponsor a blood drive on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 from 8:30a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Anyone interested in donating blood are welcomed to participate. You maycome to Vista on the 19th with a valid ID.

Holidav Celebration: Students will celebrate the upcoming holidays by having a doordecorating contest and candy grams will be available for purchase through ASB.

Parent Meetings: School councils will meet this Thursday, December 13, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. AllVista family/community members are welcome to attend.

Members of the Board of Education, Superintendent Velasquez, Lynwood Unified SchoolDistrict officials, fellow students, Mends, and family members. Good evening.

My name is Ramon Martinez, and I am the student body President from Lynwood CommunityAdult School.

Registration for our second trimester began on November 26lh. To date, over 1600 students havechosen to take advantage of our flexible schedule and the variety of classes that the Adult Schooloffers. Included in this enrollment were over 200 concurrently (high school) enrolled studentswho needed to make up credits as part of the credit recoveiy program. Students from Vista,Lynwood High School, and Firebaugh High School are taking classes such as Chemistry,Algebra2, World History, Geometry, U.S. Government, and U.S. History to fulfill graduationrequirements. In addition, the Adult School is offering the GED examination to students onDecember 11th, 12lh, and 13th. Over thirty students have registered to take this exam.

During this holiday season, the Adult School will reach out to the community by giving foodbaskets to needy students. The Associated Student Body has organized a food drive to collectnon-perishable food items to give out on December 20th. In addition honorable mention goes toAdult School students and staff who participated in the Lynwood Candy Lane Parade. As part ofthe commitment to reach out to the community, information about all the Adult School programswas made available by the Adult School parade spectators.
