any device that takes water from any source, such as public or private mains, tanks, ponds, or
reservoirs and increasing the pressure of water for the purpose of supplying the necessary flow
to any fire protection system such as sprinkler standpipes, water spray or foam system.
Types of Pumps: (According to Purpose)
1. Suction Pump : Is a type of fire pump that supply the necessary flow and pressure ofwater for fire fighting system from water reservoirs , ponds ,well and river.
2. Booster Pump: Is a type of fire pump that increase the water pressure, which is drawnfrom a public service main or private-use water system.
3. Jockey Pump: Is a type of fire pump that maintain system pressure without turning onthe fire pump.

2 .Positive Displacement Pump: It is used on fire trucks, water mist system
that require very big pressure and as a foam concentrate pump in foam/water system
Types of Centrifugal PumpsThe pumps divide into two types according to shaft position, pump divide to:
a- Horizontal:
a. End Suctionb. Horizontal split case pump
It is not used for suction lifts from water reservoir (NFPA) but it is used for NPSH not
more than 5.38m and suction head 3.7m and it need a priming tank capacity 100-500 liters
(LPC).

1- pumps for rating over5000 Gpm are subject to individual review by civil defence2- A centrifugal fire pump shall be selected in the range of operation from 90% to 150 % of it
is rate capacity
Fire Pump Application
a. According to NFPA the fire pump are used for sprinklers and hydrants system
b. According to BS5306 part 2 (LPC) there are two sets of pump one for sprinklersystem and other for hydrant system
