Baptist History #27
The First Great Awakening, Part 4
Baptists experienced their earliest surge of
growth in the six states of New England. In
areas where the Congregational Church was
established by law, Baptists faced legal re-
strictions and opposition which varied from
harassment to severe persecution. In spite of
this, however, Baptists increased from 60
churches in 1740 to 979 churches in 1790; and
from 3,142 to 67,490 members in the same
half century.
In Rhode Island Baptists never quite lived up
to early expectations. They formed the first
Baptist church in America in Providence in
1639 and in 1764 located their first college
there, thinking that the state would be predom-
inantly Baptist. Perhaps their extreme diversi-
ty hampered growth, for Rhode Island Baptists
included Regular, General, Six-Principle, Sev-
enth-Day, and Separates. For a time, the Sepa-
rate churches outnumbered the Regulars, but
their reluctance to participate in associations
and the tendency of Regular Churches to re-
claim some of the Separate members hampered
their witness.
The progress of churches in Massachusetts
entitle them to be placed “at the head of the
American Baptists.” Of 91 Baptist churches in
the colony by 1790, 73 were Regular and they
contained 82% of the Baptists. Of 46 Separate
Baptist churches formed in Massachusetts, 20
had switched to Regular Baptists by 1790.
A leader of high visibility was Hezekiah Smith
(1737-1805), a pastor who combined pastoral
duties, evangelistic tours, and denominational
service, particularly as a trustee of the Baptist
college in Rhode Island, within his overall
ministry in the colony. Converted and bap-
tized by John Gano, Smith entered the
Hopewell Baptist Academy in New Jersey in
1756 and graduated from Princeton in 1762.
At the time, he was one of only five college-
educated Baptist ministers in America, only
three of whom (Smith included) were consid-
ered orthodox in theology. Following his
graduation, Smith did a 15-month preaching
tour of “the Southern governments” and
formed a firm friendship with Oliver Hart, a
pastor in Charleston who ordained Smith to the
gospel ministry in 1763. During the Revolu-
tionary War, Smith served as a chaplain and
won additional Baptist converts. He preached
for several months at Haverhill in a New Light
Congregationalist church and by 1765 those
who preferred the Baptist way withdrew to
form a new church right in the center of town.
Hezekiah Smith served as pastor of that church
for the next 40 years. However, he preached
mission tours constantly and is credited with
forming 13 additional churches. In 1802
Smith helped to form the Massachusetts Bap-
tist Mission Society, the fir st of its kind in
America and the forerunner of the nationwide
Home Mission Society (now North American
Mission Board) formed in 1832.
As we look forward to our Annual Meeting
of our Association on Sunday, October
22nd at Caney Fork Baptist Church, be plan-
ning now to BE THERE! Not only is it
going to be a great time of fellowship, but
we will get to see the newly built Caney
Fork Baptist Church! It should encourage
us, wherever we are, to know that our oldest
church is still growing and reaching out
beyond their walls to the community around
them! It also means that if we continue to
do as we should and must in our communi-
ty, we too will see a great harvest. There is
a lot to be said about keeping our lights on
and shining for the Lord in our various
communities.
Associationally together, we can accom-
plish more than we can by ourselves as indi-
vidual churches. As we are beginning to
plan for next year, let us continue to be a
vital part of Stone Association. As you as
individuals and your particular churches do
well, so will the Association prosper. Mon-
ey is but a small part of this equation. Your
prayers and personal help for all of our
churches will provide valuable assistance to
each of us. Ultimately it will also help us in
reaching those without Jesus both locally
and abroad. May the Lord provide what
you need and bless you daily.
Joe Wiles, DoM
Jesus Loved Me
Jesus loved me-yes, He did.
He died to set me free.
He gave His life that I might live
And died on Calvary’s tree.
Jesus conquered death and then
Went to His heavenly home.
Now He gently calls to all
Will you no longer roam?
Now He is with me all the time;
He’s with me now each day
May you know His saving grace
And walk within His way.
Jesus loved me, yes, He did
He died to set me free.
So I will follow Him and try
Always like Him to be.

COLONIAL VIEW
As summer ends and schools return to class,
a new session of “Trail Life” and “American
Heritage Girls” has kicked off with a busy
bang. The Trail Life Program began Septem-
ber 1st with an Open House and they have
grown from twenty young men last year to
already thirty-four enrolled in the program
this year. The American Heritage Girls
kicked off the year with a pool party and they
had their first meeting August 31st. They
have also grown! Last year they had twenty
girls and this year they are starting with twen-
ty-five. Nothing like starting off with new
faces, what a blessing! Please feel free to
contact: [email protected] or
[email protected] for more infor-
mation. We would love to have your young
men and ladies be a part of these awesome
programs.
Colonial View attended the “Religious Or-
ganization and Church Fair” at Tennessee
Tech and handed out 300 bags of candy and
church invites to new incoming freshmen. It
was a wonderful outreach and fun was had by
all who attended. Hopefully we planted some
seeds, even if it was in the form of a sugary
confection.
Our pastor, Marc Burnett, will kick off the
“City-Wide United” Conference on Septem-
ber 10th at Avery Trace Middle School. It is
great to see area churches in Cookeville, Ten-
nessee, working together for God...What an
awesome event to do our part! We are so
proud of our pastor and the role he plays not
only in our church but in our community.
Our church will have a Deacon ordination
service on September 17th. Robert Reid and
Barry Bohannon will be ordained as Deacons.
We know they will both be of great service to
God and our church. We are so thankful for
their commitment. The success of God’s
Kingdom on earth depends on us...Keep
Working!
Our pastor is Rev. Marc Burnett

From time to time churches need someone
to supply or an Interim Pastor and do not
know who to call. The following men have
indicated their willingness to supply (some as
Interim Pastor) and would appreciate an
opportunity to serve.*
“I charge thee therefore before God, and the
Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick
and the dead at his appearing and his
kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in
season, out of season; reprove, rebuke,
exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.”
