On Sunday September 11, 2016 the Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation (CARILEC) along with country’s co-host SKELEC, officially opened the renewable energy conference at the St. Kitts Marriott Hotel, Frigate Bay under the theme ‘RE Ready...Are We ready?’. This conference was held during the period September 11-15. Seated at the head table were the Minister of Energy Hon. Ian ‘Patches’ Liburd, SKELEC’s CEO Mr. Cartwright Farrell, Mr. Jose Maria Figueres Olsen former President of Costa Rica now Chairman of the Carbon War Room and CARILEC’s Chairman Colin Cover .

Also in attendance were board members of SKELEC, NEVLEC and CARILEC, Regional and International utility companies representatives. CARILEC’s associate member ABB was the platinum sponsor, with Catepillar, SOL and BWSC as the other sponsors.

Hon. Minister Liburd and SKELEC CEO Mr. Farrell spoke on the importance of renewable energy for the people of St. Kitts and Nevis and the Caribbean on a whole. The importance of weening Caribbean utilities from the dependency of oil and the volatility of oil prices on emerging markets like ours were also covered. Chairman of the Carbon War Room, Mr. Jose Maria Figueres Olsen spoke on how as part of the government of Costa Rica he has seen the country’s

utility infrastructure run on 100% renewables and how it has reduced its carbon footprint tremendously. He also gave remarks on how the reduction in energy costs have led to an increase in the manufacturing sector, plus positive growth in internet business server hosting.

The first two days consisted of several sessions conducted by companies involved in the Renewable Energy market, along with member utilities giving remarks about the state of renewables in their existing environment.

Our sister island of Nevis utility company NEVLEC representative, gave

brief remarks on geothermal and the grid code of Nevis.SKELEC presented on its own Solar Farm and the intended introduction of wind energy into the grid shortly.

Renewable Energy Company, NorthStar Development which currently has an MOU with the Government of St. Kitts- Nevis and SKELEC, presented their findings on wind as an energy resource in St. Kitts, the

development of their 5MW (megawatt) wind farm along with the technologies they will use to provide reliable renewable energy into SKELEC’s existing grid and the necessary upgrades needed to do so.

The conference was deemed a success with CARILEC giving high commendations to SKELEC and its team for a job well done.

Messrs Roger Flemming, Dwyer Edmeade and Ms. Sanshe Thompson traveled to St. Louis, Missouri to attend the annual Daffron UGM Conference/ Training session over the period September 26-29, 2016.

This training is part of SKELEC’s ongoing efforts in providing practical training to staff across all fronts.

The training is geared towards the advancement of all users of the Daffron system.

Daffron is the Customer Information System (CIS) that handles our Billing, Accounting and Customer Fault reporting.
