20th European Meeting of Environmental and Engineering Geophysics

Having received over two hundred extended abstracts for the 20th European Meeting of Environmental and Engineering Geophysics, the conference will accommodate a range of interesting topics that is sure to make the upcoming Near Surface Conference the success it has been over the years.Apart of the great number of traditional participants, the am-bition of the conference in Athens is to attract geoscientists from nearby region (Balkans, Middle East, North Africa) and from far away (Americas, China, Australia) in order for new contacts to be created and new technologies to be announced at a place where science was served from ancient times.

The 20th European Meeting of Environmental and Engineering Geophysics aims to highlight the importance of state-of-the-art techniques and to trace the road ahead of the applica-tion of geophysical methods to a variety of engineering and environmental problems. The continuous growth of the Near Surface Geoscience Division and the increasing interest toward the application of geophysical methods represent a stimulus and a challenge for a continuous scientific and tech-nical improvement. Innovative approaches, relevant case studies, theoretical developments and technological new im-plementations will be shown and discussed in workshops and technical session. For more info: www.eage.org/events/nearsurface-2014

Welcome to Athens!

Athens has been chosen to host Near Surface Geoscience 2014. It will be held on 14-18 September 2014 at Hotel Divani Caravel.

This year the event has been expanded with conferences that run parallel to the 20th European Meeting of Environmental and Engineering Geophysics of EAGE’s Near Surface Geoscience Division. This edition will also incorporate the First Applied Shallow Marine Conference and the First International EuroGPR School.

The conferences have their own technical programme and will attract people specialized in the conference topics as well as people with a broader Near Surface Geoscience focus. The combination of conferences offers participants from the dif-ferent disciplines a chance to follow a technical programme specialized in their area of expertise whilst also being exposed to other disciplines.

Delegates can register for the conference of their interest. The registration gives them access to the technical programme of that specific conference. Moreover they are free to also at-tend the technical programmes of the other conferences and visit the exhibition. The social programme, consisting of the Icebreaker reception and the Conference dinner, is also inclu-ded in each registration.

The exhibition becomes the central place where companies from all disciplines display their products and services. The coffee breaks and Icebreaker reception take place in the ex-hibition and provide excellent networking opportunities in an informal setting.

Short Course

Satellite InSAR Data: Reservoir Monitoring from Space (EET 9)Sunday, 14 September 2014Mr Alessandro Ferretti (Tele-Relivamento Europa (TRE))CPD Points: 5

Course DescriptionThis one-day course provides a step-by-step introduction to satellite radar sensors, SAR imagery, SAR interferometry and advanced InSAR techniques. Rather than a tutorial for remote sensing specialists, the course starts from very basic concepts and explains in plain language the most important ideas related to SAR data processing and why geoscientists and engineers should take a vested interest in this new information source.

Participants’ ProfileThe course is for anyone who would like to understand how satellite sensors can measure surface displacements to a fraction of a centimetre from space. Reservoir engineers, geophysicists, geodesists, geologists should all be interested in this new tool for surface deformation monitoring that is becoming more and more a standard. Radar data are still largely unknown but their impact on oil & gas and civil protection applications can be huge.

Near Surface Geoscience 2014 15 14-18 September 2014, Athens, Greece

This one-day field trip will bring the participants to the region of Lavrion, east of Athens. The tour will be centered around the mining activities that have taken place in this region from ancient times up to recent years. Both the tunnels and the technological park related to mining and metalurgical activity will be visited.During the trip, additional presentations will be given on geophysical methods for underground storage of toxic products, the detection of ancient tunnels and marine resistivity for the preservation of the old iron French bridge in the hall of the Technological Park of Lavrion. The field trip will be concluded with a visit to the beautiful Poseidon Temple at cape Sounion.

Field trip 2: SantoriniThursday 18 September - Saturday 20 September 2014The field trip to Santorini Island will cover geological and volcanic issues as well as the geophysical methods used to monitor the volcano. The three day trip will also include a visit to the small Kammeni Island (in the Caldera) which has volcanic activity and to the archaeological site where a village was covered after the eruption of the volcano.NOTE: The Hellenic Geophysical Union is responsible for the organisation of this field trip. EAGE is not involved in the planning and/or execution of the Santorini trip.

For more information and to register for this field trip, please contact Mr. Spiros Lianos.([email protected])The registration deadline is 13 July 2014.

Near Surface Geoscience Parallel Conferences

Participants of the 20th European Meeting of Environmental and Engineering Geophysics are free to also attend the technical programmes of the First Shallow Marine Geophysics Conference and the First International EuroGPR School.

First Applied Shallow Marine Geophysics Conference

This meeting has attracted papers covering a wide range of topics. Where several papers

focus on particular case studies from a wide variety of geo-graphical locations, others are more topical or address specific methodologies. The common aspect for all papers is the move towards a better characterization of the seabed, the sub-surface and the active sedimentary and fluid flow processes, using essentially seismics and EM methods.

The aim of the first Applied Shallow Marine Geophysics confe-rence is, therefore, to bring together practitioners and research-ers who develop and apply geophysical methods to enquire into and resolve issues of seabed and overburden geology.Whilst offshore development projects have historically been in coastal or shallow waters, interest has moved towards ever

deeper waters on the continental slopes worldwide, where various geohazards have become of critical concern.

The focus of the conference lies in understanding the current state-of-the-art and presenting lessons learned from case stu-dies. This will set the scene to identify new trends and technol-ogies required to help in geophysical site characterisation and geohazard assessments: from survey design and acquisition to quantitative and integrated data interpretation techniques. For more info: www.eage.org/events/shallow-marine-2014

First International EuroGPR School

The European GPR Association (EuroGPR) is an organization which is looking to change the

fractured approach to GPR training by engaging on a long term plan to provide its own European wide training program. It is a not for profit Eurocentric organization; with no overriding ties to anyone country, state, education system, equipment manufactur-ers or academic institution. It therefore offers a neutral centre from which to set a viable European-wide training standard to-wards which other interested parties may migrate without bias.

On this basis it is offering an opportunity to attend a two day programme, taking place during the Near Surface Geoscience conference an introduction to the rudiments of GPR will be provided.

The two day programme will comprise of two sessions per day. Day 1 will be based around GPR theory and Day 2 will focus on practical application. The programme will be aimed at those who are new to, or have limited experience of GPR. More in-formation about the content of the programme will be pub-lished nearer the time. Participants can visit the technical programmes of the First Applied Shallow Marine Geophysics Conference and the 20th European Meeting of Environmental and Engineering Geophysics on the third day.

The lectures will be given by Mr. Alan Jones of PipeHawk plc and by Dr. Raffaele Persico of the Institute for Archaeological and Monumental Heritage IBAM-CNR, both members of the Committee of the European GPR Association.

All those attending the EuroGPR school will be given the op-portunity to submit themselves for on-line assessment to ob-tain the new EuroGPR Core Skills certificate, at a discounted price, should they wish to do so.For more info: www.eage.org/events/EuroGPR-2014
