Transcript of Film posters

Font and Title locationBar a few franchises (Alien) it has become convention for

the film title to be located at the bottom of the poster. This

means whilst it doesn’t interfere with the main image it is still able to draw the eye.

As stated previously the font must be unique to the franchise, with “Chappie” it is immediately evident that this is a sci-fi film. As for inception whilst it seems to take on the design of a neon sign it is actually reflecting the idea of mazes (Within the film they create mazes in the mind).

Director and achievementsWhilst the location of this can vary It is often found at the top of the poster. As it is unlikely that people will remember a directors name they rather list their most recent or most memorable achievement. In this case Neill Blomkamf is represented through his most memorable film “District 9” and “Elysium” which starred Tom Cruise. Cristopher Nolan being represented through “The Dark Knight.”

The Tag Line

A film’s tagline is often the most memorable part of the poster. It must be able to sum up the entire premise of the film in an easy to remember one liner. Probably the most famous and memorable example of this is Ridley Scott’s ‘Alien’ who’s tagline read “In space no one can here you scream” thus setting the genre as a sci-fi horror hybrid set in space. The location of this can vary but it is generally located under the films title.

“Star Factor”In order to attract a wider audience and avoid the film being marketed to a much smaller ‘niche’ audience a film will often employ the concept of Star Factor. This means hiring actors with a sizable fan-base as to bring them to the film. Leonardo Dicaprio being the star in Inception and Sigourney Weaver and Hugh Jackman being the stars in Chappie.

Main ImageThe main image is utilised to present the main idea of the film and create interest. It will display the main actor/ actors and often show the location of the film. Whilst it will vary from genre to genre, the conventions are as follows: • The poster will feature either the main

protagonist or antagonist.• The poster will be laid out in such a way

that the image is dominant. • The image will be doctored and not

actually take place within the movie.
