Typography• The font used in horror posters can differ depending on the type of horror

and the time is was made.• Some posters will use bold Script or Serif fonts as they are both quite

formal and in an old style.• Using an old style with the right colours, etc. instantly gives something an

air of mystery and creepiness.• Another style which is more popular now is the idea of children.• Fonts such as Bradley Hand or Chalkboard might be used because they

look similar to that of a child’s handwriting.• The writing may also be uneven and not in a straight line.• Modern horror films use the idea of children because, when dressed in the

right costumes and using the correct music, they put an audience on edge and give the film a creepy atmosphere.

Colour• Popular ‘horror’ colours include; black, red, grey & (dull) white.• Black, grey & white are dull and connote mystery, as opposed to

bright colours, such as yellow, which suggest happiness and joy.• Red connotes blood, death and decay which are commons themes

used in horror films.• Dark colours, like black, can make horror posters stand out against

others which brighter colours. This means the eye is drawn to them whilst also suggesting darkness, mystery and fear.

• Dark colours are also linked to loneliness which is a common trait of characters in horror films and is often the reason they go ‘mad’.

Characters• Horror posters create a lot of enigma by keeping

the identity of the character hidden.• This adds an element of mystery and, ultimately,

makes it look scary.• Sometimes the poster won’t show any characters

and the image will just be of a location, maybe showing a prop which hints at the narrative (e.g. The Conjuring).

• Usually, the character shown in the poster is the main antagonist and the colours, etc. used make them look creepy/terrifying/mysterious.

• Also, the character will usually take up most of the frame. This shows that they dominate the film and are the strongest character.

Background• The background used in horror posters differs depending on the film.• For example, most will use an isolated location in the background with

the main antagonist in the foreground to show the type of location used in the film.

• However, horror film franchises such as Scream won’t use a specific location in the background and will just have an image of the iconic mask because it is easily recognised.

• Linking to the colours used, the background will be dark, sometimes foggy, to create mystery and enigma.

House is more in the background than the foreground, suggesting you wouldn’t want to go near it.
