Fifth Sunday of Easter May 10, 2020

“Let Not Your Hearts Be Trouble”

We are not promised an easy life and may even suffer for our faith (Acts 7:55-60).

Call out to God in the midst of shame and confusion, trusting in God's steadfast love (Psalm

31:1-5, 15-16). Jesus is the cornerstone of salvation that was rejected on our behalf. Through

Him, we have received mercy so that we may proclaim the mighty acts of him who has called

us out of darkness into light (1 Peter 2:2-10). He is the way, truth, and life who has promised to

prepare a place for us in the presence of the Father (John 14:1-14).

Jesus prays that we all be one. The tensions in today’s Gospel is that Jesus knows that he is about to go

away. How are his followers to stay together? He wants them to flourish. They flourish best together. He is

the Way. If they remain focused on him, they will stay together. They are about to be handed an important

mission: to be Christ to the world. They need that focus. So do we.

So our world focus has changed and as of last Monday, manufacturing and distribution opened and this

Monday, May 11th, retail will open and as of May 15

th, salons, barbershops and some outdoor dining are open.

On May 22nd

indoor seating dining is open. For many of us these openings cannot come SOON ENOUGH,

however, we are REMINDED of social distancing and personal protection for others and for ourselves.

We still have not received a DIRECTIVE for HOW the opening of our Churches will look like on the

weekend of May 30th and May 31

st – Pentecost Sunday. I am still sure that social distancing will NEED to be es-

tablished, which means every few pews will be OPEN for seating. We will continue to suspend the distribution

of the Cup; there will be no Offertory Procession, no Sign of Peace, and Communion in the hand and PERHAPS

our leaving the Church from the VARIOUS DOORS of the Church so as to remain socially distanced. If there’s

something else we need to be aware of, I will inform you.

Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is observed in different forms

throughout the world. In the United States, Mother’s Day 2020 occurs on Sunday, May

10. The American incarnation of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and be-

came an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Jarvis would later denounce the holiday’s commerciali-

zation and spent the latter part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar. While dates

and celebrations vary, Mother’s Day traditionally involves presenting moms with flowers,

cards and other gifts.

History of Mother’s Day

Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and

Romans, who held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele, but the clear-

est modern precedent for Mother’s Day is the early Christian festival known as “Mothering

Sunday.”

Once a major tradition in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, this celebration fell on the

fourth Sunday in Lent and was originally seen as a time when the faithful would return to their

“mother church”—the main church in the vicinity of their home—for a special service.

Over time the Mothering Sunday tradition shifted into a more secular holiday, and chil-

dren would present their mothers with flowers and other tokens of appreciation. This custom

eventually faded in popularity before merging with the American Mother’s Day in the 1930s

and 1940s.

Fr. John’s Classic Cheesecake Recipe

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Cover 9 inch spring-form pan with aluminum foil, sprayed with Pam Baking Spray.

Graham Cracker Crust:

1 ½ cups graham cracker crumbs (substitute ½ c of ground nuts)

½ c sugar

2 teaspoons cinnamon (to taste) 5 Tablespoons melted butter

Pour melted butter over first 3 ingredients and blend together in a bowl and

then pat crumb mixture in the bottom of the prepared spring-form pan. Bake

in oven for 5 minutes and set aside.

Consider: ginger snaps, Oreo cookies, vanilla wafers, or other favorites as a

base to the cheesecake. You can also inverse crust ingredients – 1 cup of nuts

with ½ c graham crackers.

Basic Cheesecake:

3 8 oz blocks of Cream Cheese (room temperature) 1 can Sweetened condensed milk and blend well in your mixer

Add 4 large eggs (room temperature) one at a time and blend well

Add 2 Tablespoons lemon juice (or other extracts depending on additional ingredients)

Add ¼ cup flour and continue to blend well.

At this point you can ADD other ingredients to the batter: crushed pineapple, pumpkin, peanut butter, cocoa powder,

crushed heath bar, peanut butter cups, M&M’s and on and on. BE CREATIVE! You get it! You try it! BUT REMEM-

BER replace lemon juice with other extracts to highlight the ingredients you are using.

Pour batter into prepared spring-form pan and bake in 350 degree oven for 50 minutes.

Remove cheesecake and cover with 1 container of sour cream.

Return cheesecake to oven and bake an additional 10 minutes.

Remove from oven and let cool before refrigerating cake for a few hours.

Remove spring-form and with a long off-set spatula, lift cake from its base and slide on to a serving dish!

Decorate, Serve and Enjoy!

MOTHERS’ DAY

Happy Mother’s Day! I send out my best wishes out to all mothers in appreciation of the work that you do! No one except you

will know just how much you have sacrificed due to the love of our children, but we can definitely thank you for the love and

kindness you have spread! If you’re able to, it might be really neat to call up your mom and say hello, especially if it’s been a

while! If that’s not possible, you can always send a prayer up for her as well. Let’s take time to give thanks for the ladies in our

life who have raised us to be the people we are today!

Of course, we also include our holy mother, Mary, on this day as well! There are several days in May designated specifically for

Mary, and each feast day holds a slightly different aspect of the Blessed Virgin. In calendar order, first off are the feasts of the

Most Blessed Sacrament and Our Lady of Fatima, both which land on May 13. On the 24 th, we celebrate the feast day of Mary,

Help of Christians. The feast of Our Lady, Queen of Apostles is a movable holy day, and always lands on the Saturday after the

Ascension. Since the Cleveland Diocese celebrates the Ascension on the weekend rather than Thursday, this year the Mary feast

is May 30th. To end with a bang, the feast of Mary, Mediatrix of All Graces and the feast of the Visitation both land on May 31 st.

Definitely take some time to research these feast days if you have some time!
