Dave Pierce is a genius. He was the musical director for the Opening Ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and convinced Executive Producer, David Atkins, that a fiddle number should be included in Canada’s biggest showcase to the world. And by all accounts, it turned out to be a highlight of the whole ceremonies show.

The twelve minute portion of the ceremonies show, entitled ‘Rhythms of the Fall’ featured a huge cast of fiddler stand-ins and a chorus of dancers, but the real stars were some of Canada’s brightest fiddlers playing tunes composed by none other than Canada’s Fiddling Sensation and Alberta Fiddler Calvin Vollrath, who also participated in the ceremonies by playing his fiddle proudly alongside the orchestra.

Five fiddlers representing five different regions were on stage to perform the fiddle style of their region. The number was topped off with the most Canadian fiddle tune of them all, Ward Allen’s Maple Sugar, in an homage to our past. The entire number wrapped up with an energetic performance by celtic phenom, Ashley MacIsaac. --- Continued on page 10

A Word from the President The January General Meeting and

the CGM elections are now behind us, and I am pleased to announce that your Executive remains exactly as it was in 2009, a great team to be sure. It is, however, somewhat disappointing that there were no new nominations to the Board this year. In order to continue to be successful and progressive “new blood” is essential. The tenure for the Board, as elected, will be until the end of August, 2010, when a new Board will be elected for the period September 1, 2010

till August 31, 2011. This time period fits better with the activities of the CGM.

Registration is now in full swing for the August, 2010, “By-the-Canal Fiddle Camp”. For the past several years the camp has operated at capacity, so I advise you to get your registration in as soon as possible if you are planning to attend.

In closing, I wish to thank the 2009 Board and committee members for a job very well done, and it is with great pleasure that I look forward to working with you all again this year. Thank you for staying “on board” and committing to yet another excellent year for the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Association.

21st CGM Competition to be held at the Shenkman Arts Centre in Ottawa East (Orléans)

By the CGMFA Committee

For the last 20 years, the CGM Competition has been held at Centrepointe Theatre in Ottawa West (Nepean) but due to renovations at Centrepointe throughout the summer of 2010, the CGM Competition will be held at the brand new Shenkman Arts Centre in the east end of Ottawa (Orleans).

The 500-seat Harold Shenkman Hall is a fully serviced performance venue. The theatre has a proscenium opening and a 3,640 sq/ft stage. It is a purpose-built facility with state-of-the-art acoustics, seating, equipment, broadcast-ready capacity, sprung floor and back-stage facilities, including a fully equipped green room, dressing rooms and wardrobe room.

There is plenty of free parking in the area for cars and trailers. The Theatre is located at 245 Centrum Boulevard in Ottawa’s east-end and anyone I’ve spoken to has highly recommended it. It’s just a short drive from downtown, an 18-minute drive from the Travelodge West Ottawa and just a few minutes walk from OC Transpo’s Orléans Station at Place d’Orléans Shopping Centre.

The after-party will be held at Darcy McGees Irish Pub at 260 Centrum Blvd. This is a great pub with an excellent outdoor patio and I’ve heard they are looking forward to having fiddlers there to party! Stay tuned for more details in the June edition of the Canadian Fiddler.

Guest Ensemble, When Here Meets There, to perform for CGM 2010

What do you get when you pair an ECMA Award Winner with a Canadian Grand Master Fiddle Champion? You get a dynamic live performance featuring two of the most highly acclaimed fiddlers around! When Here Meets There is the coming together of Shane Cook’s swinging Ontario-oldtime fiddle with Troy MacGillivray’s driving Nova Scotian fiddle and piano. Troy MacGillivray of Lanark, Antigonish County, NS is an accomplished fiddler, pianist and step dancer who has travelled around the world with his talents, including Afghanistan to entertain the troops this past May. With four highly acclaimed CD’s to his credit, his most recent release, Live At The Music Room, won him the 2008 East Coast Music Award for Instrumental Recording of the Year and Music Nova Scotia’s 2008 Traditional/Roots Recording of the Year. Troy made his first appearance as a judge for the highly prestigious Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Competitions in 2008 and is also a winner of the Danny Kyle Stage at Scotland’s Celtic Connections Festival and the Auleen Theriault Young Tradition Award from the Goderich Celtic Roots Festival—both of which are awarded to an outstanding talent who clearly demonstrates a passion and commitment to traditional and roots based music.

Shane Cook of Dorchester, Ontario is one of Canada’s most highly awarded old-time fiddlers: 3-time Canadian Open Fiddle champion, 3-time Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Champion, Grand North American Fiddle Champion, and the only Canadian to win the US Grand National Fiddle Championship. Shane is also a cast member of Bowfire, a powerful group of the leading names in each genre of modern string playing with shows that feature the top violinists and fiddlers on the continent.

Individually, these two fiddlers are virtuosic musicians and dynamic performers; together, stimulating and feeding off of each other and their top-tier back-up musicians, they are inspirational! It’s a mix of East Coast and Ontario, of bluegrass, country and Scottish tradition. In concert, Troy and Shane together provide an astonishing breadth of styles, tunes, and arrangements individually but together there is an obvious excitement and spark between the two players and their ensemble that is infectious!

The ensemble, When Here Meets There, includes New Brunswick mandolin player Ray Legere, Nova Scotia guitarist Skip Holmes and Troy’s sister, Sabra MacGillivray who dances during the show.

Ray Legere • is one of the best musicians that exist who is definitely proud of his East Coast roots and it shows in his personality and his music.

Skip Holmes • was a regular face on “Up Home Tonight” for a number of years and has played with hundreds of fiddlers from around the world”.

Sabra MacGillivray • is a highly acclaimed highland and stepdancer, not to mention plays a mean bodhran!

Martine Billette was born into a family of great traditional fiddlers from Ste-Barbe, Quebec. She put on her first pair of dancing shoes at the age of four while taking lessons with Serge Mathon. After spending a couple of years with Serge, Martine continued to learn the art of dancing from other notable dancers like Martin Duheme and Gilles Roy. With a strong foundation established from years of hard work, Martine has become one of the most respected young professional Quebecois dancers. She has performed for seven years with Montreal based trio, Rapetipetam, with Pierre Chartrand and Marie-Soleil Pilette.

Martine credits her father, for introducing her to this rich traditionnal music. Along with her talents as a dancer, Martine also possesses great credentials as a piano player. After receiving her Bachelor of Music from the University of Montreal, Martine has found herself in high demand for both recording and performing engagements with many well-known Canadian artists. She played with Andre Brunet for about four years. To date, Martine has toured the USA, England, Japan and France with such talents as Menage a Trois, Manigance and The Pierre Schryer Band, all representing the rich traditionnal music that Canada has to offer. Martine completed her second Bachelor’s degree at the University of Quebec, in Montreal, a three- year Music Therapy program and is now working in two retirement homes in the Lanaudière area.

the Eastern Division Bluegrass Awards in the categories of Mandolin and Fiddle Player of the Year, honors which have distinguished him with a Masters Award for each.

Ray’s talents continue to be recognized and sought out. As an ongoing performer of many styles, Ray plays great stages like the Grand Ol’ Opry and Carnegie Hall. Not only does Ray perform on his own, he also performs with the group, Bowfire.

Knowing Ray’s credits and television experience, CBC asked him to be musical director for a Country music television series called Fiddlehead Country. Ray is now the house fiddler for the French music show Pour l’Amour de Country. Because of his busy schedule Ray has been transcribing his solos to be printed in tablature and music notation. When time permits, a video of the solos will be broken down and will be available so one can learn the musical ideas that Ray has picked up over the past 25 years. Ray has recorded on hundreds of sessions and presently has five solo projects of his own.

credit, over 50 of his own albums, numerous music books of his original tunes and an instructional DVD.

Just recently, Calvin was commissioned to compose 5 fiddle tunes for the Vancouver Winter Olympics 2010 Opening Ceremonies to represent the various styles of fiddling our country has to offer. Alex Lamoureux Performs at 2010 Olympics

By The Lamoureux Family

Courtenay fiddler Alex Lamoureux was recently chosen as one of only six fiddle players from across the province to perform at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.

The main stage performance under the Olympic epicentre was part of a Victory Ceremony at the 2010 Olympics on February 14. The ceremony was the first night of medal awards and was attended by 22,000 plus people and was witnessed by some of the greatest athletes in the world.

Each night, a different province from Canada organized a half hour showcase of talent. The performance was a collaboration with Victoria-based musician Daniel Lapp. He said, “The criteria that I’ve set forth in my talent search is to find talented, enthusiastic and dedicated young players but also those whom embody the infectious spirit of fiddle music and who I foresee having an impact on our BC fiddle culture for years to come”.

Alex Lamoureux, a grade 12 student at Highland Secondary, is the 2008 & 2009 BC Fiddle Champion, and was thrilled to have been chosen.

“It’s an honour to be able to perform at the Olympic Victory Ceremony, and I’m really pumped to have had this opportunity to work with Daniel and the other 5 BC fiddlers. It was a blast,” said Lamoureux. Alex was a junior showcase performer at the CGM in 2007 and a competitor in 2008 and 2009. Other CGM notables who performed with Alex at the Olympics included: Sydney Wilson of Prince George, who was a junior showcase performer in 2005 and a competitor in 2006 and 2007, and Sarah Tradewell who will be invited to compete in 2010, her first invitation to the CGM competition.

Canadian Fiddle strikes Gold at the Olympics continued...Fiddlers included past CGM Champions: André Brunet from Québec representing the French

Canadians; Pembroke’s April Verch representing the Ottawa Valley; Daniel Lapp of Victoria represented the West Coast; Sierra Noble of Manitoba represented the Métis fiddle; and Samantha Robichaud of New Brunswick represented East Coast/Acadia. A career highlight none of these fiddlers will soon forget.

With autumn colored maple leafs filling BC Place, from big fold up leaves to colored leaves projected on the audience to falling leaves from the sky, it was a tribute to one of Canada’s most recognizable symbols. CTV claims that 3.5 billion spectators worldwide watched the show and it was the biggest Canadian viewing audience in history. What an incredible boost to Canadian fiddle music.

If you missed it, you can always go online to to watch the entire opening ceremonies:
