CHAPTER 1: FIBER BYPASS SWITCH OVERVIEW

The Packeteer Fiber Bypass Switch is an external device that connects a fiber optic network’s inside and outside interfaces. When the bypass switch is connected to a Packeteer unit, the switch prevents the Packeteer unit from interrupting network access when the unit is not powered on or is in bypass mode.

If the Packeteer unit is operating normally it supplies power to the Fiber Bypass Switch through a control cable. When the bypass switch is powered on, it pivots internal mirrors to reflect optical signals to the appropriate fiber optic connector, connecting the Inside and Outside ports on the bypass switch to the Inside and Outside ports on the Packeteer unit.

If the Packeteer unit is not powered on or is in bypass mode, the Fiber Bypass Switch’s relay mirrors revert to their default bypass (power off) state. When the switch is powered off, the mirrors connect the bypass switch’s Outside port directly to its Inside port, allowing the fiber optic signal to completely bypass the Packeteer unit.

Installation Requirements

Though Packeteer has released more than one model of Fiber Optic Lan Expansion Module, the Fiber Bypass Switch is only compatible with newer LEMs which use SFP Transceivers and have control ports. With a compatible LEM installed in an expansion slot, the Fiber Bypass Switch can be used with the following units:

•Packeteer 3500 series•Packeteer 7500 series•Packeteer 8500 series•Packeteer 6500 series

The Fiber Bypass Switch can connect to the following Packeteer units either directly through the unit’s built-in control port or through an installed Fiber Optic LAN Expansion Module with an optical bypass control port.

•Packeteer 9500 series•Packeteer 10000 series

There are two models of the Packeteer Fiber Bypass Switch, designed for use with either single-mode or multimode fiber networks. Before installing your bypass switch, ensure that the switch type is compatible with your network fiber type. The installation procedures for both models are the same.

As with all passive optical components, an installed Fiber Bypass Switch introduces an insertion loss, typically 1.4 dB (1.8 dB maximum). Increased insertion loss will reduce the current maximum allowable cable length for your fiber network.

✍ Note: A single-mode Fiber Bypass Switch will not function properly in a multimode fiber network, and a multimode Fiber Bypass Switch will not function properly in a single-mode fiber network. Additionally, a Fiber Bypass Switch cannot be connected

to a LAN or a LAN Expansion Module that has one multimode and one single-mode transceiver.

Additional InformationFor additional information on configuring your Packeteer unit for bypass mode with the setup shaping bypass command, refer to PacketGuide or the Getting Started Guide for your unit, both available for download at http://support.packeteer.com/documentation

CHAPTER 2: INSTALLING THE FIBER BYPASS SWITCH ONTO A RACK

This chapter describes how to install between one and three Packeteer Fiber Bypass Switches onto the Fiber Bypass Switch 1U rack-mount panel. The rack-mount panel described in this section is not included with the switch, and must be purchased separately. Contact your Packeteer representative for details.

Install the Switch onto the Panel✍ Note: This procedure is optional; if you do not wish to install the

switch onto a rack, you may set the switch directly on top of the Packeteer unit.

1. Remove the screws that hold the rack-mount ears on the switch faceplate, then remove the rack-mount ears.

2. Slide the switch into the center opening in the rack-mount panel, until the faceplate of the switch rests against the panel, as shown in the figure below.

3. Secure the switch to the rack-mount panel by inserting the screws through the holes on the switch faceplate and into the panel.

Additional optical bypass switches can be installed without removing the rack-mount panel from the rack.

To install an additional switch into the rack-mount panel:

1. Remove the screws holding one of the removable blank plates from the front of the panel.

2. Remove the screws that hold the rack-mount ears on the bypass switch faceplate, then remove the rack-mount ears.

3. Slide the switch into the center opening in the rack mount panel, until the faceplate of the switch rests against the panel.

4. Secure the switch to the rack-mount panel by inserting the screws through the holes on the switch faceplate and into the panel.

5. To install a third switch into the rack-mount panel, repeat steps 1-4 with the third switch.

Verify Installation

Once the Fiber Bypass Switch has been connected to the network and the Packeteer unit, you should check the following LED and LCD indicators to verify that the switch has been installed correctly.

Switch LED IndicatorsThe green Status LED light on the Fiber Bypass Switch should be illuminated, indicating that the switch is in operating normal mode. In this mode, the bypass switch is powered on and traffic is being passed to the Packeteer unit.

If the LED light is off, the switch is in bypass mode. The switch is not receiving power and is not passing network traffic to the Packeteer unit. Refer to the table below for some of the possible causes and solutions.

Possible Causes Solutions

The control cable has been disconnected

Check your the control cable and ensure it is properly connected to both the switch and the Packeteer unit.

The Packeteer unit is in bypass mode. Bypass mode can be set via the browser interface’s setup tab, or by issuing the command-line interface command setup shaping bypass.

Disable bypass mode on the Packeteer unit. Access the unit’s command-line interface via a console (serial) connection and use the setup shaping command to turn shaping on or off. (Refer to PacketGuide for more details on bypass mode and accessing the CLI using a console connection)

The Packeteer unit has been powered off

Restore power to the unit.

3-4

Page 17: FIBER BYPASS SWITCH - Symantec · The Packeteer Fiber Bypass Switch is an external device that connects a ... Fiber Bypass Switch Control I n side Outside T o Packetee r I nside T

Packeteer Unit LCD IndicatorsThe LCD window on the front of the Packeteer unit should not display any new link or bypass mode error messages. If any of the following error messages appear after installing the switch, the switch may not be installed correctly.

Error Message Unit Condition Solution

? Bypass Mode bypass mode Bypass mode prevents both packet shaping and network management access. Disable bypass mode on the Packeteer unit. Access the unit’s command-line interface and use the setup shaping command to turn shaping on or off.

? In Link Down Network Connectivity Problem

Unable to detect link state of the inside interface. Check cabling on switch and Packeteer unit.

? Out Link Down Network Connectivity Problem

Unable to detect link state of the outside interface. Check cabling on switch and Packeteer unit.

Test the Bypass SwitchVerify Normal Mode

After you have checked the Fiber Bypass Switch’s LED indicators and the Packeteer unit’s LCD to verify that the Fiber Bypass Switch is properly installed, connected and powered, you should check your router and network switch’s transmit and receive lights to ensure that both the router and network switch are sending and receiving traffic normally.

Verify Bypass Mode

Next, you should verify the flow of traffic when the Fiber Bypass Switch is in bypass mode.

1. Power off the Packeteer unit. Turn off the power switch on the back of a 3500, 8500, 9500 or 10000 model, or unplug the power cord(s) from a 6500 model. A 7500 model has two power supplies, each with its own power switch. Turn off both switches to completely power off the unit.

2. Verify that the green status LED light on the Fiber Bypass Switch is no longer illuminated.

3. Check your router and network switch’s transmit and receive lights to ensure that both the router and network switch are sending and

4. Restore power to your Packeteer unit. The switch will again send traffic through the Packeteer unit.

5. Verify that the Fiber Bypass Switch’s green status indicators are illuminated, and that Packeteer unit’s LCD does not display any new link or bypass mode error messages.

6. Check your router and network switch’s transmit and receive lights to ensure that both the router and network switch are sending and receiving traffic normally.
