Past &Present

Past & Present is a treasured tradition for Hall 3. This annual event provides a platform for the graduated players to come back and play against the existing players, imparting invaluable insights and their valuable experiences to our players.

The JCRC members couldn’t resist but join in the fun, actively p a r t i c i p a t i n g in the various games including Tennis, Basketball, Othello, Contract bridge and Carrom. Softball definitely stole the spotlight for this year’s Past & Present. Many of the experienced, graduated seniors including Han Wei and Yuan Chyi showed their support and returned for a good game of Softball. I overheard them saying, “It has been two years since I ‘batted’!” Despite their long hiatus, the seniors certainly put up a good show displaying

explosive power and sharp expertisein their attempts to score for their team.

Not forgetting the recreational games of course, the session

provided fruitful learning lessons to the majority

of the participants. When some of the non-carrom players encountered a road block, Kyle and Feroz helpfully explained some of the rules, for one, the function of the

red carrom seed. Seniors were patiently

decoding strategies to existing players and it

was definitely an afternoon filled with warmth and I am not

talking about the afternoon heat.

Truly, Past & Present 2013 was an eye-opener where everyone displayed applaudable sportsmanship and great skill. Well, until Past and Present next year!

The sun blazed merrily in the sky,and our players streamed out of the bus, ready to play against our sister hall Sheares. Hospitable as ever, Sheares hall had their own players and committee ready to greet us. After the exchange of plaques between Sheares Hall and Hall 3, to the applause of the residents, our players got ready to head out to play their respective games. The start of the morning was blazing, the fields were still wet and muddy from the rain the night before. The residents enjoyed playing tennis, softball, basketball, sepak takraw, soccer and touch rugby. Although it was rounds

of friendly matches between the halls, there was still and edge of competition to the games. The sun started to fade disappointingly as the day dragged by, and the dark clouds threatened, we were able to complete the games in time. We retreated back into Sheares Hall to enjoy delicious light refreshments kindly provided.

We enjoyed the day in the spirit of camaraderie, further bonding the sister halls. Until next year!

12 DaysOf

Christmas

On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me, a very festive hall 3. Hall 3 and our friendly neighbours 16 geared up for our joint christmas festivities in the comm hall. A snowman on a pale blue banner overlooked the event, while the respective committees, in Santa hats for hall 3 and gold glitter for hall 16, scurried around spreading the Christmas cheer.

Residents from both halls dressed to the twelves in their most festive sweaters in red and green, adorned with nordic snowman prints, reindeer and grinning santas.

Contributing to the festive atmosphere was an acoustic set performed by Eugenia and Mervyn.Of course there was also delicious fruit beers kindly provided by Sweet Touch Taiwan Beers to accompany our Christmas meals.

Ending off our 12 days of Christmas event was the mass phototaking. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Ho Ho Ho!

Hall 3 Wonders

Inter-Hall Cheer Competition“The greatest pride a coach could have is when he sees his students overcome their own limitations. Thank you for always believing in me Hall 3 wonders! This journey has been an amazing one!” ~ Coach Winston

Words by Kum Jia Ming Photographs by Joy Leow and Aw Li Jun Design by Joy Leow

The Inter-hall Cheerleading Competition (IHCC) 2014 fell on Wednesday, 5th February - the hopeful and decisive day the Wonders had marked on their calendars months earlier. With this year’s theme being festivals and prominent cultural occasions, the Wonders decided to put up a performance routine based on the Japanese Taiko Drum Festival, symbolic of the rally for war and a call to battle. Coach Winston Soh conceived a bold performance routine that was much more theme-centric and which radically deviated from those of the past, and this novel approach was undoubtedly well-received by judges and spectators alike.

Under the expert guidance of returning senior Cheerleaders including Boulder Loong and Charmaine Ann Thio, the Freshies progressed quickly to match the physical and mental demands required to put up a flawless performance. Training schedules intensified from the December holidays all the way through Chinese New Year, with all team stakeholders dedicating countless hours to practice and to perfecting every minor

Technicality of their stunts. Much time was also invested in making the props and banners some of the best Hall 3 has seen in recent years, kudos to creative directors Deanna Lee and Darryl Lim.

With one final prep talk and team huddle right outside the performance hall, the Wonders were all pumped up for competition. As Bernard Lau enthusiastically recalled, “I could literally feel my hair stand on its ends the moment I stepped on the mats. The deafening roars of the crowd; the overwhelming emotions – I knew that all the injuries and effort all this while has been worth it!” The Wonders put on an energetic performance and proved that though the team was small in numbers, they were big at heart. Team captain Ethel Sim remarked,” In my opinion, this year’s team is the strongest hall 3 has ever had. Despite the staggering setback only days before competition which necessitated last-minute modifications to the performance routine, we never gave up and fought till the end. It was pure epitome of the spirit that our Taiko drums theme embodies. To my teammates, you make me proud to be a part of Hall 3 Wonders!”

Transcendance, the idea that dance could transcend boundries and produce meaning beyond itself. Our hall’s Absolut3 truly expressed the theme, telling an eloquent story of a couple in and out of love (played by Kenneth and Angela).

The performance started with going through the cheerful experience of a flight (Singapore does house a world class airport after all), to the catchy tune of the Virgin Airlines safety song. Suddenly, a plane crash, and the ethereal movements of Asolut3’s contemp dancers, and the tragic ending, all too the sounds of Beyonce’s Halo. It was truly touching and exemplified the time and effort that our dancers dedicated (training up to 3am at night at HSS).

From the male ballerinas from Hall 4 to the synchronization of Hall 1, the ceremony had its audience captive.

At the end, definitely, our Hall had much to root for, cheering for all our medal receivers. Good job and well deserved to all our sports and recreational players! Thanks to the effort of all our players, and support from all our residents, we achieved the sports championship and the overall championship!

Until the Hall Olympiad 2015!

It was the night of the annual super hop. The turn-out was great with both seniors and freshies coming down to relax and enjoy delicious food. It was a great break from the hectic schedules during this IHG/IHRG period.

Our first stop was Chinatown Food Street in a bid to drink in the festive Chinese New Year mood. Not sure if we were lucky or unlucky, but we were able to beat the usual crazy crowds partly because most of the stalls were closed for the night upon our arrival. Many of our residents thus retreated to Maxwell Food Centre across the street and started our first supper meal there. Many would be familiar with the famous and numerous chicken rice stalls located in the food centre, like Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice. With several stalls still opened, such as the likes of Ho Kee Pau, it was enough to please us. While some of us dined at Maxwell food centre, some preferred to try the frog leg porridge along New Bridge road, and Kko Kko Nara fried chicken, all of which were within walking distance and well recommended. Although Korean food has been a hit lately with youngsters, Kko Kko Nara fried chicken came as being too pricey, while the frog leg porridge has been received well by those who ate there. That concluded the short but satisfactory food hop at Chinatown, which brings us to our next stop.

The next destination was Geylang. What comes to your mind when someone speaks of “Geylang”? I don’t about you, but what I do know is that it houses many mouth watering food places. Along the whole stretch of Lorongs (alleys/streets), one can be greeted with religious temples, coffeeshops still sprouting with people in the wee hours of the morning. The food places here should sound familiar to many, such as 126 Dim Sum, our first stop at Geylang. While many graced Swee Choon dim sum, this was an alternative. Residents were intrigued by the hand-made drinks like Wintermelon Barley, Sourplum and many more. Due to the time limit we were given, some of us decided to scurry off to our next and the most anticipated food place – Rochor Beancurd located at Lorong 39, although the late night caused some decided to settle for Yong He Beancurd house along Lorong 27, strategically located about the corner.

As this might be the first time that some residents have been to these food streets to eat, it was undoubtedly a good experience and one that is not to be missed especially with great company. Thank you residents for supporting this hall event although some of you had morning lessons the next day, I guess this is what hall life is all about!

Final Year Night

The theme of the night was back to school. The hall was decorated with coloring papers and crayons on the tables, and hopscotch decorating on the floors. It was a burst of nostalgia for the graduating seniors.

The night, hosted by Bo Zhong, started off with performances by the Rebounds jam band featuring the cultural secretary, Chrissy, playing popular songs such as “Say Something” by Christina Aguilera. There were dedicated and touching videos showing prepared for the seniors, showing heartwarming well wishes from their fellow residents. Amidst the festivities, there were also games, such as an arm wrestling competition between

seniors Boon Rong and Johnnie, as well as Nikki and Joannas. It was followed by a limbo match between Sanjay, Billy, Kenneth, Shi Ying and Wee Ter. There was also a game of bingo, where one had to find people with experiences such as, “dyed golden or bleached hair”, “baked in hall before”, “Has gone on exchange” and “ex-JCRC member”.

Dressing to the theme, the seniors came in their best uniforms, with Joannas and Kenneth Khing (and his SpongeBob backpack) achieving the best dressed awards. The senior’s also got to receive and write in memento boards, to remember all the people they bonded with over the years. There was great food, a fun photo booth and amazing friends; it was a night to remember all that has passed, and a memorable night indeed.

The hall truly reflected the theme of the night, a Mexican fiesta. Residents came down to support their friends and enjoy the food and the Tiki-bar, set up specially for the night. Backstage, the performers paced nervously, ready to showcase their heavily practiced talents.

During the event, each performance was preceded by a video introduction of the performer. The Tres Artes Fiesta kicked off with musical veteran Emil Ng crooning a soft acoustic original composition.

Emil’s well received performance was followed by medical student Lim Wei Shan’s melodious singing, favouring the soft tones inspired by Colbie Caillat.

Mervyn, Jasmine and Jin Seon soon followed with another stunning acoustic set, to the applause of the hall.

Suddenly, a blackout. But wait, no, it was simply

preperation for Joy Leow’s stunning poi lightshow. In the last acoustic set of the night, Mallory and Ahmad played a sensational medly of popular hits. Their performance was greeted with cheers from supporters.

In a brief interlude, following the theme, a pinata competition was held. Randomly chosen residents were blindfolded and given the chance to hit the toy, guided by the shouts and instructions of their friends,

Finally, the night ended with a bang, when Kenneth and Angela performed a captivating hip hop dance with mesmerizing pops and locks.

The Tres Artes Fiesta was true to its name, and truly was enjoyable for both the contestants and the residents. Taking first place was Kenneth and Angela, and most popular was Joy. Good job to all and see you again next year!

包KA LIAO ! STAGED: Hall 3 Productions (previously referred to as ‘Special Projects’) returns this AY 13/14 with a bigger, better and an even funnier and heart-warming production entitled ” 包KA LIAO”. The event was held at STUDIO@TRCC, The Republic Polytechnic on March 15th 2014 which saw an astounding turnout. The audience were catapulted down memory lane with this 1970’s themed production focusing on family values, friendship, morality and of course, love.

The start of the play saw 6 characters who shared their dreams on what they want to grow up as and while the audience laughed along with the silly little antics portrayed in this classroom scene, little did they know they were being introduced to what would become our main characters of the play… The entire show revolved around the lives of the occupants of Bugis Street highlighting on ‘pao’-making rivalry, the never-ending street gossip and the romance that blossom in the neighbourhood.

A special mention to the casts who added so much warmth and colour to this play: Mallory Goh as “Joo Lay” who is ever filial to her brother “Boon Peow” (played by Darryl Lim) and who would later on find love in “Hong Lim” (played by Tan Chin Hong);” Tao Kay Neo “(played by Kyle Yeo) and his sidekick ”Ah Beng” (played by Sean Tan) who acted as the antagonists in this show together with their hired helpers the NI4NI boys “Fi” (played by Muhammad Firdaus) and “Wan” (played by Ikhwan Risydah); the ultimate “Gossip Girls” (played by Caren Tso and Ng Yi Ling) and last but not least, our motherly figure “Da Jie” (played by Haikal Sulaiman) and her posse “Molly” (played by Jasmin Sadimin) who tied up the entire play beautifully.

Together with the blood, sweat and tears of the entire crew: our lights & sounds technicians, costumes and make-up artists, property and stage managers, publication and publicity officers, business managers, technical and creative directors, Daniel Lum and Hidenobu Kubo, assistant director, Eunice Chiam, our director, Sheryl Lee, financial controller, Teo Pei Ling, co-producer and producer Ng Sau Cheng and Johnnie Ang, ” 包KA LIAO” was successfully served to the audience as a warm, enchanting and flavourful production leaving their hearts filled, and moods lightened. On behalf of STAGED, I would like to thank all of you once again for your support. Till we meet again, see you at our next production!

When Chris Martin from Coldplay yelled “it was all yellow” to millions of fans worldwide, he could very well have just been referring to Hall 3’s annual Yellow Tee Day. From to the yellow clothes hangers, too the yellow balloons, to the throngs of yellow T-shirts that decked Hall 3’s courtyard, it was, indeed, all yellow.

The night kick-started with the raising of the yellow balloon that overlooked the event. Intentional or not, it coalesced to the shape of a heart mid-way through the event, beaming its warmth over its residents. It was a sight to behold as the bunch of yellow balloon rested above the clothesline of yellow shirts which looked literally like this |--------Y-E-L-L-O-W-T-E-E-D-A-Y--------|.

A host of activities kept us all entertained throughout the night. Big and small BBQ pits were available for residents to use, as residents clustered around in groups enjoying the free food provided for by the organising committee.

The FOC committee kept the celebrations lively with their beer relay mini game, which saw winning team, ‘Team Huyi’ taking home a week’s supply of beer when their team won the relay with a timing of 47 seconds. Kudos to team anchor, Kaleb, who gamely downed the last can in his yellow tee in the crucial seconds to edge out ‘Team BJ’.

What is an event without music, videos and memories? This year’s Yellow Tee Day saw a host of wonderful performers take centre stage to serenade our residents. Nostalgia filled the air as the video of our cheerleading team at the Hall Olympiad Opening ceremony was screened.

We were also treated to a stellar recap of the

performance by our dance crew, Absolut3, at the Hall Olympiad Closing Ceremony. A fitting end to

our IHG 13/14 season which ultimately saw Hall 3 bringing the

Gold back to 52 Nanyang Walk.

Several prizes were also given out during the night, the most inspiring being the ‘best roomie award’. In displaying unconditional care and concern for Denise, Best Roomie Jingru showed us what it meant to go above and beyond just being a roomie. It is a timely reminder for us all

to show appreciation for our roommates, neighbours and fellow hall residents alike, who have stood by us throughout the year(s).

A beautiful mosaic was also unveiled by President Mok. It comprised of a segmented canvas, each square painted by our own resident artists earlier in the week. Despite the distinctly themed squares, the overall mosaic exuded dynamism and vibrancy, akin to how each and every resident contributes to the vibrant Hall 3 spirit in their own unique way.

As we head back to our room to study, who could deny that the past three days of painting, free sandwiches and celebrations has been nothing but fun? Yellow Tee Day 2014 was only possible thanks to main sponsors Advisors Alliance, the Block-reps Sub-committee for excellent organisation and effort, and last but not least, the yellow-clad residents of Hall 3, for making Yellow Tee Day 2014 a success!

Elit

e NightCycling

Words by Ang Jin Yang Photographs by Jinni Loo June Kua Chang An Ting Design by Joy LEow With just slightly over a month left to the end of our academic term, NTU’s students are starting to gear up and enter overdrive in preperations for the exams. At the other end of the spectrum, Hall 3 residents were gearing up for our annual Elite night cycling event. At around 10pm, the first of three staggered waves of cyclist left on their journey to the East (Coast Park). As the night was still young, the cars were aplenty, and this made cycling along the road a daunting task.

Many were unused with cycling with heavy traffic around, and it took us some time to get used to it. Under the watchful eyes of the many Group Leaders around, the three contingents managed to make it to the first rest point, TradeHub 21. We were rewarded with redbull during our short respite and then off we went to our first supper stop. Alas, nobody said it was easy as Toh Tuck Road stood in between us and the ambrosial Al Azhar ’s Chicken Satay. On a map, it looks just like any other road but on the ground, we saw a continuous uphill stretch of over 1 kilometre. Surprisingly, most of our cyclists managed to make it to the top without stopping midway, but then again, what else could we expect our dedicated residents? After working our quads, what better way to reward ourselves than having a sumptuous supper? The famous supper stretch had everything from Prata to Porridge, and 45 minutes later, I’m sure everyone left satisfied.

All went well after the awesome supper, until our group leaders turned right and led us to Holland road. Flanked by private houses, we were then led us through an endless stretch of undulating roads. It was a difficult cycling up the gentle slopes because they seemed to last forever, but the ride down was nothing short of exhilarating. The true test came at the end of the road, where an insanely steep slope stared down upon us. Some stood up and pedalled, some shouted, some got off and pushed their bikes. In unique ways, with our thighs burning and spirits deterined, we conquered the fearsome Holland Road slope. It was definitely the hardest part of the journey, and we soon found out what would be the second hardest. It was already 3am, but somehow, cycling together made it easier to stay awake. As the traffic quietened down, we were able to cycle alongside one another rather than in a single file. Cyclists then took this time to catch up with each other (figuratively and metaphorically speaking) and also make new friends.

Before we knew it, we reached Maxwell food centre for our second supper stop. Centre of a vibrant night scene, we saw gyozas and desserts. With refuelled vigour, we headed towards Gardens by

Page 20: FH3 Issue 2 AY(2013/14)

the Bay where the Elite contingent took a team photo with the towering MBS as a backdrop.

Crossing the marina barrage and cycling along the reservoir, we were treated to the beautiful nightscape of Singapore as we inched closer to our final destination just round the corner. It was almost 7am when the first contingent entered ECP and soon enough, all 3 contingents gathered safely at the end point. We were treated a second time, witnessing the vivid colours produced by the rising sun. Seeing the sunrise alone was worth the long journey to ECP. Good job to all cyclists for making it safely to ECP, and also kudos to the organizing committee of Elite 2014 for a job well done.

See you at Elite 2015!

The Hall Appreciation Dinner is the annual curtain closer of the Hall Olympiad season, and held in appreciation of our sports, recreational games, dance and cheerleading representatives. Representatives were greeted by the sight of streamers running from the second floor perimeter ledges to balloons in the centre. Additionally, the various banners of the Gold-medal winning sports and recreational games were displayed as well, making the atmosphere feel like a Carnival of Pride.

The emcees, Ihkwan and Firdaus kicked off the event by reprising their roles of Fi and Wan from our Hall Production, 包 Ka Liao, and provided the laughs for the evening. The Guest-of-Honour in attendance for the evening was Mr. Puneet Kumar Narula, the Hall Fellow in-charge of Block C. In his opening speech, he was joyous over Hall 3 bringing back the Overall Championship once again and asked the audience to “…bask in the glory, and to have fun!”

Following which, the Buffet Line was opened and attendees streamed towards the food. A sumptuous spread awaited them, served up by our very own JCRC – A show of their gratitude towards the hard work of the residents.

Besides being very well fed, attendees were constantly kept entertained with performances by the Strawberry Jam Band and Absolut3.

Towards the end of the night, the evening proceeded with the presentation of awardsrecognising outstanding Sportsmen,

Recreation players, Performing artistes, Sub-Committee members and graduating residents.

Ending off the Night, Joshua Mok, the President of the Junior Common Room Committee (JCRC) recapped Hall 3’s “hell of a season” and reiterated our Motto derived from the Hall’s Legion Cheer, ‘We do as we please, as proud as can be’.

With this heartfelt end to the Hall Olympiads, we would also like to wish residents the very best as they embark on the final lap of this Semester. All the best!
