The scariest things this Halloween aren't your resident ghosts and ghouls. No, I'm talking about something waaay scarier; the EXAMS that are lurking around the corner! I'm pretty sure most of us are already feeling the heat. But, knowing students, we still do what we do best - we procrastinate. And now we, Hall 3 publications, present you with another form of distraction, a perfect excuse for procrastination, in the form of FH3. So cast aside all your notes and books, and join us as we uncover Hall 3's past, and recollect the memories we made in the past semester.
Cheers!Ethel

I came to FOC expecting to make new friends and have lots of fun… instead during the camp I ended up…*doing a lot of weird stuff* … HML
Okay FOC wasn’t that bad, After all, I managed to get to a know an awesome bunch of people and do a lot of stuff I wouldn’t normally do (like yell Xi Niu Nai and wag my hands in various weird positions). Together, we pitted ourselves through an assortment of unique games and activities which brought the various OGs(Astra, Bruno, Caden, Dezo,& Evo)
closer together.
As it is, the programmers had only one thing stuck on their minds the first day - “100 seconds no NG”. I remember gulping down several large bottles of water (it’s good to hydrate right?), and at the end of each game, we had to quickly scramble to take a group photo.
Other memorable activities included the OGs having to present a short skit on the theme, “Finding Neverland”. For some reason, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” was featured prominently in at least 2 of the skits. The audience was treated to a series of bad impromptu acting and zombie dances.
And who could forget SP night? We were tasked to take Neoprints and buy a small gift for our SP before heading down to Fort Canning Hill. There, we were given a huge spread of sumptuous food and treated to various performances and activities. Unfortunately for me my SP loved food and got me to eat before the dinner, so I couldn’t eat much(she still managed to down several plates after that though). Several couples were ‘sabo-ed’ up on stage to perform various unusual feats. Jamband and Geyao performed love songs, including a mashup of Coldplay’s “Fix You” and The Script’s “For the First Time”.
We also had an Amazing Race. My OG(Evo) somehow aimed to be Sub-uest Champions, so we ended up walking backwards down the street, tying our hair with rubber bands (for the guys), buying 5 different brands of bubble tea… and more.
So thats it for FOC (: I think the comm did a really great job, and I’m sure all the freshies have learnt something about the rich culture of our hall(including the Legion Cheer.), and have assimilated well into Hall Life.

his year’s Annual General Meeting was held on the 25th of August, immediately after Hall 3’s very own polling day, marking the end of the 28th JCRC’s reign and the rise of the 29th. Although seniors foretold it would be smooth sailing, I found it to be a potentially nerve-wrecking event.
The Meeting was slightly delayed in an effort to garner more residents down, but began promptly when there were sufficient members in the audience. Minutes were passed, and there began the Q&A session. Past decisions and actions were questioned relentlessly and members of the 28th responded swiftly and appropriately.
Sensitive and even painful questions were asked, and my heart went out to members of the 28th who were being questioned. Despite that, gratitude was expressed and echoed throughout the audience for the hard work the 28th had put in over the past year.
Our current president, Winfred, mentioned that such an aggressive response from the residents was not expected, and advised the 29th not to be disheartened by the Meeting. He went on further to elaborate that it was a good opportunity for them to learn from their predecessors’ shortcomings.
The 28th has indeed done an excellent job, given the positive feedback, praises and the over all improvements to the hall. As a freshmen, I’ve heard about all the wonderful achievements by the 28th JCRC. They have managed to entrench our status as the overall champion hall, overcoming all the obstacles that stood in their way throughout the year. Lets hope the 29th can emulate the good done, and perhaps surpass our predecessors, soaring Higher as One.

Imagine mul+-‐coloured li1le beads sca1ered all over a table top, illuminated by the so: glow of a slowly-‐burning red candle, housed in a li1le translucent cup. This mesmerising scene was thoroughly enjoyed by the a1endees of the 29th JCRC Sub-‐commi1ee Night which took place in Hall 3’s very own Communal Hall. One beau+ful li1le table was allocated to each of the nine commi1ees doing their very best for Hall 3 and its residences.
The event kick-‐started with the sub-‐commi1ee members mingling around, enjoying refreshments that were provided to make everyone feel at home. A1endees with empty stomachs from one long +ring day at the University absolutely loved this delicious treat.
A:er the various sub-‐commi1ees se1led down, a warm welcome speech was given by the JCRC President, Winfred. Then, the fun began. The sub-‐ commi1ee members got to know each other be1er through a series of ice-‐breaker games. A:er which, everyone had a good laugh trying to guess cleverly photoshopped pictures of various JCRC members while at the same +me, compe+ng with other sub-‐commi1ees for the fastest correct answer to score for their respec+ve sub-‐commi1ees.
The most exci+ng part of the night was a game called “It’s my birthday party!” where each sub-‐commi1ee sent two representa+ves to be blindfolded and forced to share a single jacket. The pair had to navigate across the hall, with the help of the other sub-‐commi1ee members while avoiding obstacles, such as balloons, on the way. The objec+ve of the game was to blow out a candle when they reached their des+na+on.
The game concluded with many laughs and giggles as the members of the commi1ee which finished last were asked to perform a chicken dance with balloons tucked underneath their shirts!
This exci+ng night concluded with a fun-‐filled photo taking session for each sub-‐commi1ee as every group tried their very best to pose in the most unique way possible. All good things came to an end eventually, but an unforge1able ending this +me for sure.

I’m sure many of us have been told that due to a paranormal encounter in Block B, the girls and guys have swapped floors. Spooky? Yes. Credible? To a gullible freshie like me, yes. I was quite curious about Hall 3’s history after that. I mean, surely there are more stories like this? We decided to do a little snooping around for the benefit of curious freshies like me, and who better to interrogate ask than our dear hall officer? Christina, who has been here since 1996, sheds light on Hall 3’s history.- Ethel Sim

The 2nd of September saw Hall3ians decend upon Club Avatar at the Marina Mandarin Hotel. Dressed to the nines, residents were in for a great program, painstakingly planned and lovingly executed.
The emcee of the night was (gasp! Surprise!) Xi-wei, definitely not a strange face around the hall. As both the co-chairperson and Hall3’s resident emcee, his wit and humour (and the vodka too) soon brought the crowd to a high as the contestants took to the stage, couple by couple.
Tashi, Sarah, Liza, Huiquan and Bao Ling, Junior, Hongyi, Lucas, Josh and Joe, everyone looked stunning. And rightfully so. For they had been training hard - catwalk practice, dance lessons, costume fittings and grooming sessions - you name it, they’ve done it. Strutting on stage to the cheers and whistles of their supporters, each had a short Q&A to showcase their personality. As if we didn’t already know what we needed to know in order to love them!
Things really picked up when hapless residents were sarbo-ed on the stage. Of particular distinction was block A’s Mr Kubo, who saw fit to take off his shirt in a dance off against block D’s Jermyn, to the raucous of the guffawing audience. Suffice to say that the real winners of that mini competition were the audience. This was another in the string of funny episodes that will no doubt pepper their Hall 3 experience.12

The real show began when our blindfolded beauties fondled our blushing boys on stage in a game of What’s That Word. Whatever it was, the boys soon found themselves shirtless ala Full Monty PG13, their well toned abdominals gleaming under the lighting. The audience sighed. Even the guys in the audience, who wished their own bodies looked that good (blasted hall suppers!)
Eventually, Tashi and Joe were crowned Miss and Mister Popular by popular vote. Even though the belly dancing surprise was accidentally leaked by Miss Popular herself, I’m sure there was no lack of eager anticipation for the upcoming actual event. Arabian Nights, can’t wait! 13

14Arabian Nights
Down an alley at Sultan Gate, past a resplendent mosque and nostalgic side-‐streets,
Hall 3 held its annual Dinner & Dance 2011 at Nabin’s, an Arabic restaurant in the heart
of Arab Street. The theme for this year’s Dinner & Dance was Arabian Nights, and the
stage was set for the pageant contestants and the Dinner and Dance Commi1ee to
deliver an event that many among the residents will not soon forget.
The evening opened with an address from the ever-‐suppor+ve Professor Lok, Senior
Hall Fellow of Hall 3, looking every bit the part of an Arab Sheikh complete with
headdress. This was immediately followed by the casual segment from the Hall 3
Pageant Contestants, looking extremely sharp and snazzy in their ou^its from the latest
fashion range provided by Crocodile. As the feas+ng commenced, audiences were
treated to a variety of performances and entertainers, including Henna painters, belly
dancers, as well as a snake charmer, complete with a 7-‐foot long python!
Once the residents were fully sated from the sumptuous buffet spread of authen+c
Arabic food, they were escorted to the second level of the restaurant, to view the
proceedings, seated on Persian rugs and cushions. This was followed by the Dance
segment from the pageant contestants, with the girls looking incredibly sensual in their
shimmering belly dancing ou^its, and the guys displaying their finely honed bodies as they jumped and twirled to the music. They put on a fantas+c performance, leading to
rapturous applause from the audience as the contestants wowed them with delicately
rehearsed moves.

As the contestants prepared for their final segment, the Formal Dress, the audiences
were treated to yet another performance from the belly dancers, as well as the snake
charmer, who brought out even more snakes, including a fearsome striking cobra, which
induced a few screams a shrieks from the… less courageous members of the audience,
gender notwithstanding.
Finally, the contestants were ready, and slowly made their way out to centre-‐stage,
looking absolutely dazzling and regal in their Formalwear, provided by Volans Couture.
As they sashayed their way down the aisle, they drew gasps of awe and excited cheering
from the audience, all keen on suppor+ng their favored pageant contestants. A:er the
Ques+on & Answer segment, while the final results were being tabulated, the lucky
draw commenced, and prizes were given out to lucky audience members holding the
chosen +ckets. Once again, the Grand Prize, a brand new iPad, was won by Professor
Lok, who without any hesita+on, generously returned the prize to the draw, drawing
loud cheers from the audience, and was eventually picked up by a lucky student!
FINALLY, the results! As the results were being read out, both the audience and the
contestants collec+vely held their breaths as the judges announced…

With that, the event was concluded, and the residents of Hall 3 boarded buses catered by the Dinner & Dance Commi1ee to bring them back to hall sweet hall!
Congratula+ons to all the pageant winners, and we’re looking forward to seeing what this year’s Dinner and Dance Commi1ee will bring to us!

Albeit the rain and reloca+on to the Seminar Room, the stage was set for Movie Under the Stars.
Upon entering the Seminar Room, one would have been cap+vated by the shards of reflected light from a Disco Ball. Despite interference from the rain, haze and even NBS tee-‐shirt sale, there was a healthy turn-‐out. As they streamed in, residents jostled for prime seats -‐ the spaces along the walls.
Resident freshmen, seniors and exchange students came down with their OG and block mates, and many took the opportunity to
mingle and catch up before the movie started. There were also light refreshments provided. The
cordial and nuts made the event not only a feast for the eyes but essen+ally, a feast.
The lights were dimmed and the movie came on. X-‐Men:First Class was screened for this instalment. For those of you who were unable to make it, First Class in essence is a prequel to the X-‐Men trilogy, following the growth of the first batch of members of the X-‐Men. The storyline was fast paced, cinematography was excellent and humour frequent. Kyle Yeo, resident of 3A-‐03-‐07 and Chairperson of Block A commented “X-‐Men:First Class was an interes+ng choice and I wasn't sure that everyone would have enjoyed an ac+on movie but judging from the crowd's response, they were won over and I'm sure everyone enjoyed themselves!”
Although there was disappointment that the rain made an Al Fresco movie screening impossible, there were echoes that the secondary loca+on had an added realm of cosiness. Guan Min, resident of 3D-‐03-‐11 embraced this view with op+mism "Yes, I rather it outside but it's just as nice and cosy here!"
By the end of the movie, it didn't ma1er anymore if the screening was held under the stars, because it was agreed that the heady mix of companionship, entertainment with food and drinks made this event a shining memory for all in a1endance

People say that a nice guy never gets the girl because she’s always in love with the bad boy. Hands up if you know what I mean. Like you, our main lead has tried many ways to win the heart of his fair maiden. Sadly, despite his best efforts, (like buying sanitary pads for her), he doesn't end up with her.
The night started out with a play about a boy named Andrew who loved table tennis and a girl named Jamie. Like the typical love story, Jamie loved Andrew’s arch rival, Dickson, who was the best table tennis player on the team. Andrew was on the team too. Sadly, he was just their water boy.
Andrew (played by Gerald) strongly believed that a nice guy had to be sparkly and charming like Edward Cullen and therefore believed in the power of reading Twilight. True enough, he a1racted Jamie’s (played by Wen Zhen) a1en+on when he started talking about the Twilight series. Dickson (played by Jie Huang), got jealous at their sudden unusual interac+on and confronted Andrew. They decided to ba1le it out – table tennis style. Andrew was decked out in red, and Dickson, in orange.
The match paused midway as the audience’s a1en+on was diverted towards the screen on the side of the stage where a video from “All Japan Katoh Grand-‐Prix” was shown. As if con+nuing from the match on stage, the red and the orange con+nued their ping-‐pong ba1le on the screen, this hilarious ba1le con+nued in various camera angles and as red took his final smash, the play went back to real-‐+me…
Through hard work, dedica+on and his love for Jamie, Andrew won the match. He did his victorious bicep curl and pointed at the audience while Dickson simply collapsed.
Not long a:er, it was the Inter-‐Hall Championships. Dickson shamelessly showed off his table tennis moves (I actually really mean popping) to Jamie, only to suddenly exclaim and fall to the ground in pain because he broke his wrist.
As unwilling as he was, their Indian coach (played by Feroz) had no choice but to get Andrew to take over. Halfway through their conversa+on, Feroz realised that the screen at the side of the stage was secretly sub+tling his heavily accented English. While Andrew tried explaining that it was simply ‘teletext’, Feroz eventually found out that it was only sub+tling his “incomprehensible” English. Enraged, he exclaimed that he studied English at “the bloody Na+onal University of Singapore” before spewing torrents of tongue twisters. This le: the audience in s+tches, and they laughed even harder when he stormed off the stage, yanking the microphone cord off its jack at the same +me.
Dickson’s broken wrist was Andrew’s lucky break (pun intended). His first ever opponent was – wait for it – a ninja. Another hilarious scene of exaggerated kungfu styled table tennis moves were on display and the audience burst into laughter. Of course, our protagonist won in the end.
Despite gaining new found fame and a few screaming fans, Andrew s+ll lost Jamie to Dickson. (Cue “aww man”) But all is not lost. The story doesn't end here of course. Andrew ul+mately got the girl of his dreams (who by the way, wasn’t Jamie, and was a much be1er girl in his eyes). A:er all, nice guys do finish last. That is, they finish with the last laugh.
BY ANTHEA SOH, LOH HAN LE
This year’s cultural night was held on 11th October, and the theme this year was Coeur which means “heart” in French. First up to perform was our very own Hall 3 Jamband, consisting of lead vocalists Gerald and Tiffany, Alex on drums, our lead and bass guitarists Leonard and Russell, and Emil on keyboards. As stage lights illuminated the band, the audience waited in quiet anticipation as Tiffany kick started the first song of the night with Muse’s Starlight. After that, Gerald took over singing duties and roused the audience with the rock anthem 21 Guns, before ending with Stereophonics' Dakota.
The audience was then introduced to the Geyao duo, Jon Chua and Shermaine, who presented a mash-up of 7 songs with just their vocals accompanied by the guitar. After that, Boulder appeared on stage and gave his own rendition of the love-lorn ballad “Xiang Zi You” originally sung by Yoga Lin. Next up, the male duo comprising of Randy and Jun Jie sang the KTV staple “Zui Jin”, by Sam Lee Sheng Jie. Without a doubt, riotous applause followed as the Geyao concluded the first part of their performance.
This year’s choir, led by Zhen Kai, sang the sweet and soothing melodies of “Only You” and “Can’t Help Falling In Love” in spirit of the theme “Coeur”. I believe many would agree with me that their hard work and numerous rehearsals really paid off; their vocals were fantastic!
Following this performance was the games. It consisted of three rounds of identifying songs played simultaneously. In the first part, which was the easiest, the audience had to guess a song which was being played. In the second part, which was (supposedly) quite manageable too, the audience had to name two songs played simultaneously. Lastly, for the third round, there were three songs played at the same time. Surprisingly, (because at most, I could only identify one song out of every part), the members of the audience were able to guess every song in every round.
The geyao performance continued with Jia Qi and Kenny, singing a mash up of 5 songs. The audience was lulled by their amazing voices setting the mood for the next performer, Wei Siang. He sang “Shuo Hao de Xing Fu” which was impeccably executed with his lovely voice. The last singers of the night were Wen Zhen and Edwin, who serenaded the audience with their duet “Ai de Zhu Xuan”.
Cultural night concluded with our very own Hall 3 dancers who brought the house down through various dance genres. The dancers rocked and amazed the crowd with their dance moves. After the first dance item, the song “Feedback” by Janet Jackson blasted through the speakers and out came the fierce female dancers strutting their stuff. After wowing the audience with their sexy moves, the girls cat walked backstage, only to be replaced by another set of dancers in uniformed white shirts dancing in a lyrical hip hop style to the song “DJ got us falling in love”, closing the night with a bang!
Well done to all of the performers, and good job to the cultural committee for making this event a huge success!18
