BIOGRAPHIES

NOEL

EDISON Artistic Director

& Conductor

Noel Edison is well established as one of

the most versatile and charismatic conductors

in the world today. As Artistic Director and

Conductor of two world-class Canadian

ensembles, the large-scale Toronto

Mendelssohn Choir and the chamber-sized

Elora Festival Singers, Noel is widely

recognized and appreciated for his skillful,

interpretive work with both choir and

orchestra.

The 2010-11 season marks Noel Edison’s

14th season as Artistic Director and

Conductor of the Toronto Mendelssohn

Choir. His vision for the TMC is to create

performances that connect audiences

emotionally with some of the greatest

traditional and contemporary choral

repertoire.

A native of Toronto, Noel moved to the

scenic village of Elora, where, in 1979, he

co-founded the Elora Festival and, a year

later, the Elora Festival Singers as its choir-

in-residence. Since 1984, Noel has served as

Artistic Director of the Elora Festival as well

as Organist and Choirmaster of one of the

few all-professional church choirs in Canada

at the Church of St. John the Evangelist in

Elora. In 1997 the Elora Festival Singers

were selected as the professional core of the

Toronto Mendelssohn Choir.

In 2002 the University of Guelph

conferred upon Noel Edison the Honorary

Degree of Doctor of Music and on January

22, 2009 he was appointed to the Order of

Ontario, the Province’s highest honour.

MICHAEL

BLOSS Organ

Michael Bloss leads an enviable musical

life as a performer, educator and conductor.

He has toured and performed at venues in

Europe, Japan, and throughout North

America. His US appearances include

acclaimed recitals at the Cadet Chapel,

West Point, the Cleveland Museum of Art,

St. Paul’s Cathedral, Detroit as well as

return engagements at Chicago’s Fourth

Presbyterian Church. Among a number of

firsts for a Canadian was the designation of

Preisträger at the International Bach

Competition in Leipzig, Germany playing

in Bach’s own church.

Michael performs and has recorded with

the Elora Festival Singers, an ensemble with

whom he was a Juno nominee. He has also

collaborated with the Toronto Symphony

Orchestra, including a recent appearance

playing Janacek’s Glagolitic Mass, and has

also premiered such contemporary works as

the North American premiere of Rufus

Wainright’s Prima Dona at Toronto’s

Luminato Festival. Michael has been

featured on CBC Radio and Television,

NPR and Swiss Radio. He continues as a

collaborative musician with vocalists and

instrumentalists.

A respected church musician and choral

conductor, Michael has enjoyed a long and

distinguished career of music ministry and

currently serves as Director of Music at

Glenview Presbyterian Church in Toronto.

TORONTO MENDELSSOHN CHOIR

The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir (TMC) is

Canada's world-renowned large vocal

ensemble. With over 150 voices, the TMC is

uniquely able to perform the great symphonic

choral works the way they were intended –

resulting in a pure, powerful musical

experience.

TMC audiences enjoy choral masterpieces

drawn from five centuries, including world

premieres of new compositions and some

rarely heard works. In addition to the

traditional concert season, the TMC appears

regularly with the Toronto Symphony

Orchestra (TSO) and makes other guest

appearances.

The TMC presented its first concert as part

of Massey Hall’s inaugural season in 1895.

Since its inception, the TMC has flourished

under the leadership of seven of Canada’s

pre-eminent conductors, most recently Noel

Edison. Under his tenure, the Choir has won

widespread praise from audiences and critics

for its performances in Toronto, New York,

Vienna, Salzburg and most recently in

Vancouver during the 2010 Cultural

Olympiad.

Twenty members of the Elora Festival

Singers, founded and directed by Noel

Edison, form the professional core of the

Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and the

Mendelssohn Singers. The 70-voice

Mendelssohn Singers, formed from the ranks

of the TMC, made its debut in April 2003

with a critically acclaimed performance of

Bach’s Mass in B minor. The Mendelssohn

Singers has appeared with the TSO and other

ensembles, and, in February 2007, performed

in New York’s Carnegie Hall. Its vocal

agility and emotional versatility make it an

ideal ensemble for Baroque and

contemporary choral repertoire.

The TMC choral apprenticeship program

was created in 2009 to support the

development of young choristers. Through

the program, experienced choristers between

the ages of 17 and 22 join the choir as

apprentice choristers for certain

performances. Their participation is

supported by a bursary and they also receive

voice coaching and mentoring.

The TMC has been recorded many times

since its debut recording in 1926. In 1986 the

Choir was featured on EMI/Angel’s much-

heralded recording of Handel’s Messiah. In

1993, the choir recorded part of the

soundtrack for the Academy Award-winning

film Schindler’s List under the direction of

composer John Williams, and for the Naxos

Label, the Berlioz Requiem, conducted by

Noel Edison. A Festival of Carols, the

choir’s latest recording of Christmas music,

was released to great acclaim in December

2006.

The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir is

generously supported by the Canada Council

for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, the

Toronto Arts Council, and a dedicated group

of individual and corporate donors.
