About the Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols
The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is a traditional Christmas service of Christian worship celebratingthe birth of Jesus. The story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus is toldin nine short Bible readings interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols, hymns, and choral pieces.
The original idea was drawn up by Edward White Benson, Bishop of Truro in Cornwall (laterArchbishop of Canterbury), for use on Christmas Eve 1880. It was based on an idea from the futureBishop of Edinburgh, George Walpole: tradition says that he organized a 10:00pm service on ChristmasEve using a temporary wooden shed for his cathedral, and that a key purpose of the service was to keeppeople out of pubs on Christmas Eve.
The original liturgy has since been adapted and used by churches all over the world. Traditionally an Anglicanservice, it has been adopted as part of the Christmas celebrations of many different denominations. The best-known version is broadcast annually from King’s College, Cambridge on Christmas Eve, where it was firstcelebrated in 1918 (other than King’s College, Groton School, Massachusetts in the US has performed thefestival longer than any institution, holding its first Lessons and Carols in 1928). The King’s College versionwas conceived by its Dean, Eric Milner-White, whose experience as an army chaplain had led him to believethat more imaginative worship was needed by the Church of England. The music at the first service at King'swas directed by Arthur Henry Mann, working with a choir which had 16 trebles as specified in statutes laiddown by Henry VI. Until 1927 the men's voices were provided by choral scholars and lay clerks, while today14 undergraduates from the College Choir sing the men's parts.
The service was first broadcast by the BBC in 1928 and, except for 1930, has been broadcast every yearsince. During the 1930s the BBC began broadcasting the service on its overseas programmes. Eventhroughout WW II, despite the stained glass having been removed from the Chapel and the lack of heat-ing, the broadcasts continued. For security reasons, the name "King's" was not mentioned duringwartime broadcasts. Since World War II it has been estimated that each year there are millions of listen-ers worldwide who tune in to the service live on the BBC World Service.
Our cathedral was founded on December 23rd 1888, just 8 years after the first Service of Nine Lessonsand Carols. This Carol service has become part of our Christmas worship for many years and it has builtup a loyal congregation delighted by the beautiful music and the recitation of the greatest story ever told.
We are delighted that you have chosen to be part of this wonderful tradition and wish you a blessed andgrace-filled Christmas!

Choir 2. He came down to earth from heaven Who is God and Lord of all,And his shelter was a stable, And his cradle was a stall; With the poor and mean and lowly Lived on earth our Saviour holy.
All 3. And through all his wondrous childhoodHe would honour and obey,Love and watch the lowly maiden,In whose gentle arms he lay:Christian children all must beMild, obedient, good as he.
4. And our eyes at last shall see Him,Through His own redeeming love; For that Child so dear and gentleIs our Lord in heaven above,And He leads His children onTo the place where He is gone.
5. Not in that poor lowly stable, With the oxen standing by,We shall see him; but in heaven,Set at God’s right hand on high;Where like stars his children crownedAll in white shall gather round.
Bidding PrayerOfficiant Beloved in Christ, at this Christmastide let it be our care and delight to hear again
the message of the angels, and in heart and mind to go even unto Bethlehem and see this thing which is come to pass, and the Babe lying in a manger. Therefore let us read and mark in Holy Scripture the tale of the loving purposes of God from the first days of our disobedience unto the glorious Redemption brought us by this Holy Child. But first, let us pray for the needs of the whole world; for peace on earth and goodwill among all people; for unity and fellowship within the church he came to build, and especially in this, our diocese. And because this would rejoice his heart, let us remember, in his name, the poor and helpless, the cold, the hungry, and the oppressed; the sick and them that mourn, the lonely and the unloved, the aged and the little children; all those who know not the Lord Jesus, or who love him not, or who by sin have grieved his heart of love.Lastly, let us remember before God all those who rejoice with us, but upon anothershore, and in a greater light, that multitude which no one can number,

whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom in the Lord Jesus we areone for ever more.
All Amen.
Please be seatedIn the Bleak Midwinter
Words: Christina Rossetti Music: Harold Darke
In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter, long ago.
Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain; heav’n and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign. In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed the Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.
Angels and archangels may have gathered there,Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air;But His mother only, in her maiden bliss,Worshipped the beloved with a kiss.
What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; if I were a wise man, I would do my part; yet what I can I give him: give my heart.
