Influences in Pop Culture

2011 summer music festival

This summer, we invite you to explore the influence “pop” culture has had on classical music throughout the ages. Encompassing a surprising array of composers from the 17th century to today, the 2011 Summer Festival presents works inspired by fairy tales, legends, plays and literary works, the jazz age, the art world and even rock and roll. Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Dvo ák, Debussy and Ravel as well as acclaimed

American composers of our time such as John Corigliano, Michael Daugherty and Patrick Zimmerli, are featured this summer in works that were inspired by the popular culture of their times.

Join me and my colleagues this summer for this season of engaging music. You, the audience, will play the most important part, as we embark on a musical adventure together in the beautiful Central Coast of California.

Through Dvo ák’s beautifully evocative quartet, this one-hour presentation and performance looks at the influences a young ‘America’ was having on composers from the ‘old’ country. Composed in Spillville, Iowa, a Czech community that offered Dvo ák a calm summer respite from his busy teaching engagement in New York, this resulting quartet is a fascinating mix of native Czech music, Native American influence and Negro spirituals.
