PRINCIPAL’S BLOG Dear parents and Friends, 2017 Grade Placement Requests In the next few weeks teachers will be beginning discussions regarding the placement of students for 2017. This is a complex task as there are many factors to consider arranging the best mix of students in each class. Teachers consider factors such as individual needs, gender balance, academic abilities, friendship groups and students who work well and/or do not work well together. This process takes many hours of planning with the purpose being to maximise student learning. If you have any educational or social matters you would like to be considered when classes are being prepared please ensure you address these with your child’s current teacher over the next few weeks. Of course it may not be possible to grant every request. Alternatively you can talk to the unit coordinators; F-2 Rhian, 3-6 Cheryl. Our aim is to inform children of their class placement and teacher prior to the end of the school year. In some circumstances this can change over the long break due to student movement (a couple of children in or out can drastically impact on our structure) and in this event every effort would be made by me to notify parents concerned of the change. Developing your child’s social media scripts I read an article by Michael Grose recently, talking about the need to teach children a media script. He wrote that, as parents, we teach our kids to talk politely and clearly so that they know how to speak to others when we’re not around. In effect, we give our kids social scripts to fall back on when they talk to friends, teachers and relatives. There’s no guarantee they’ll look an adult in the eye when they speak to them, but our discussions, reminders and lessons about manners will hopefully hold up when we’re not around. The same applies to social media. Our conversations and lessons will prepare them to be savvy users when we’re not around. “Together we make a Difference!”
1. “Is this worth posting?” The relatively impersonal nature of social media means that we can post information and pictures with relative immunity. Also its immediacy means that we can do so without much thought. This means that kids need to be very critical about what they see online. ‘Is this accurate?’ and ‘Is this worth posting?’ are two valid questions children can ask when they read posts placed by others.
2. “Have you taken a big breath?” A child who blurts out everything that comes into his mind without thinking is sure to put plenty of people offside. ‘Think before you speak’ is the type of message that every child should have in mind. The same applies to social media. Just because they think something doesn’t mean they post it. ‘Take a big breath’ may just about be the most important message to give your kids about social media.
3. “Do you want the principal to see this?!” An invitation to a teenage birthday party posted on social media is one way to get more attendees than you bargained for! The viral nature of social media means that kids should only post messages and photos that they want to be spread and read by a large audience.
4. “How does this post make you feel?” We need to teach kids that not every post needs to be commented upon and not every thought needs to be shared, particularly when they are angry. Teaching them to walk away and then to step back in when they’ve calmed down is perhaps the most important communication lesson of all. It is very relevant to social media as emotions are often the last thing on many people’s minds when they haphazardly post a message.
5. “How will you fix this?” Social media just like any social space requires kids to behave ethically and with kindness. When kids overstep the mark and post hurtful things then it’s fair that they fix their mistakes, and apologise. It’s reasonable that we teach our children to act with tolerance and with empathy online, and if mean things are posted then they should be expected to try to repair relationships through social media, just as they should offline.

FESTIVAL
Lucky Boxes
A little reminder to fill your lucky boxes as soon as possible and drop them off at the school office foyer.
Thank you to the families who have already brought boxes back in.
We have had some wonderfully creative decorations on the boxes.
There are some extra boxes in the foyer if you'd like to do another one, or didn't get one at the end of last term. These extra boxes are a different shape to the ones already distributed, but very easy to fill and decorate.
Please fill the boxes with items to the value of $8. We will then sell them at the Festival for $5. They are hugely popular and the kids snap them up very quickly on the night.
Some ideas: Stationery items (pens, erasers, notebooks) Stickers Books Colouring books Kids' gardening gear Toys Candles Makeup Hair ties Puzzles Pokémon cards The possibilities are endless!
We ask that you don't put lollies or second hand goods in the boxes as we have other stalls at the Festival selling those items.

We expect Term 4 weather to be dry enough to ride to school again on Fridays.
Who: We welcome everyone including parents and grandparents, however
you must be able to ride your bike without assistance or training
wheels. We meet at the Sassafras Village Green.
When: We leave at 8:00 am SHARP on Fridays.

Books! Books! Books!
There will be a Second-Hand Book Sale at the Twilight Festival. We already have a stack of donated books (‘Thank You’ to those generous people) and need lots more. Books can be dropped off to the staffroom (send to school in a plastic bag with your child if easier) anytime between now and up to the day before the festival.
We are also taking all Jumble Sale/Trash & Treasure donations – drop to the staffroom or main entrance (foyer).

Thank you to all those who have already helped with sanding, wall preparation, cutting in and painting our multipurpose room.
We have a working bee coming up this week on Saturday 22
nd October between 12-4pm. As well
as the usual outside jobs around the grounds (whipper snipping, clearing the footpaths, etc) we are keen to get as many people along as possible so we can complete more painting within the multipurpose room.
