OverviewFeed Value Calculator version 2.4 - OverviewThe Feed Value Calculator calculates the relative value of crude protein, total digestible nutrients (TDN),calcium and phosphorus, based on the market price and nutrient content of four reference feeds(barley grain, canola meal or wheat distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) or feed peas,1:1 mineral and limestone.A cost factor is then calculated for each nutrient. The cost factors are used to calculate the relativevalues of other feeds based on their nutrient content. Detailed user instructions are provided inthe "Market Price of Reference Feeds", "Relative Feed Value" and "Feed Price Comparison" worksheets. The Feed Value Calculator uses Multivariate Statistical Techniques. The Inverse Matrix computationswere validated by Dr. Peiqiang Yu, Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture Research Chair,Feed Research and Development, College of Agriculture and Bioresources, University of Saskatchewan,Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, using the IML procedure in SAS.The Feed Value Calculator uses a number of Macros. To have it run properly, Macros will have to be"enabled" in Excel. The Security Setting may have to be lowered in some cases. For more information, contact:Bryan Doig, PAgProvincial Feeds/Regional Forage Specialist, Regional Services BranchSaskatchewan Ministry of AgricultureNorth Battleford, SaskatchewanPhone: (306) 446-7477 or e-mail:[email protected]

User Instructions

Click one of the buttons to select Canola Meal, Wheat DDGS or Feed Peas for the first reference feed.

Enter the current market price for each reference feed. Enter values (100% dry matter) for Crude Protein - CP, Total Digestible Nutrients - TDN, Calcium - Ca and Phosphorus - P, for each reference feed in the blue cells. Values in the yellow and green cells are automatically calculated.

Nutrient cost factors are calculated. These values are used to determine the relative values of other feeds based on their individual nutrient content. These are shown in the "Relative Feed Values" worksheet.Canola MealWheat DDGSFeed PeasRestore Default ValuesPrint this PageGo To Relative Feed ValuesGo to Feed Price Comparison

User Instructions - The values in the blue cells can be changed to reflect the price of home grown or purchased feeds and nutrient content of those feeds. The Relative Feed Values (yellow cells) are calculated from the cost factors based on the nutrient content and market prices of the four reference feeds (see the previous sheet labeled "Market Price of Reference Feeds"). Today's market price of homegrown or purchased feeds can be compared to their "Relative Value" based on the price of feed barley, canola meal or wheat DDGS or feed peas, 1:1 mineral and limestone.

Comparisons should only be made between feeds in similar categories. For example, you could compare the Relative Feed Value of alfalfa hay to slough hay, but not to feed wheat. Feeding limitations and constraints of each feed must also be considered.Viewing the Cost minus Value column, a positive number means the market price is higher than the relative value. A negative number means the relative value is greater than the market price. The larger the negative number, the greater the opportunity.Restore Default ValuesPrint this PageGo to Market Feed PricesGo to Feed Price Comparison

For example: A hay buyer is willing to pay $60.00 per ton for alfalfa-grass hay (the Desired Feed) containing:

14% Crude Protein61% TDN (Total Digestible Nutrients)1.22% Calcium0.19% Phosphorus15% Moisture Content

What should the buyer offer to pay for hay that has higher or lower levels of these nutrients and moisture contents? Enter the nutrient values in the "Feed Offered for Sale" section to develop a comparison.

Note: The digestibility of 2 year old hay is reduced by approximately 10%.Place cursor over Red Triangles for additional information.$ per metric tonne "As Fed" basis2,204.6 lbs$ per metric tonne "As Fed" basis2,204.6 lbsThe value of the "Feed Offered for Sale" is calculated by dividing its Relative Value by the Relative Value of the "Desired Feed."

This value is then adjusted to the Local Market Price of the Desired Feed.

This is for one ton (2,000 lbs) of feed on an "As Fed" basis. This is the value for one metric tonne (2,204.6 lbs) of the Desired Feed on an "As Fed" basis. This is the value of one metric tonne (2,204.6 lbs) of the Feed Offered for Sale on an "As Fed" basis.First, go to the Market Price of Reference Feeds worksheet.

Make sure to enter the current market price for each reference feed. Enter values (100% dry matter) for Crude Protein - CP, Total Digestible Nutrients - TDN, Calcium - Ca, and Phosphorus - P, for each reference feed.

Nutrient cost factors are calculated. These values are used to determine the relative values of other feeds based on their individual nutrient content. These are used in the "Feed Price Comparison" worksheet to develop comparative values of the feed being offered for sale.Print this PageGo to Market Feed Prices
