A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT NCSC Members,

Happy Newf Year! With portions of California no longer under drought conditions, it’s looking promising for water training dates at Castaic Lake again this year. Keep your fingers crossed that the lake continues to rise and our requested training dates are approved. We also hope to return to Cabrillo for some Saturday training dates again this year.

While much of our club territory was pummeled by rain, we experienced crisp, clear weather with a beautiful backdrop of the snow covered San Jacinto Mountains for the Back-To-Back Regional Specialties and supported entries January 5th-8th at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio. Our Show Committee, comprised of Gigi Griffith, Denise Hatakeyama, Ray Shapland, Kathy Wortham and Erin Zimmer, worked tirelessly to ensure the event’s success. Our raffle was another huge success thanks to the leadership of Raffle Chair Melanie Bigelow. Dan Palmer and Fred Frueh were instrumental in set up and take down for the day. Pat Palmer provided a wonderful breakfast and lunch for the volunteers. Additional volunteer hours leading up to and the day of the event were provided by Pam Austin, Jeri Dinnel, Helen Do, Denise Fay, Jean Frueh, Lynn Rezzuti, Marilyn Maltby, Deborah Schuch, Ellen Selsted, and Rich and Laurie Shapiro. I hope I didn’t forget anyone, and it should be readily apparent that an event of this caliber takes many hands and many hours to ensure its success. If you are interested in lending your talents, hard work, and/or muscle to next year’s event, please let a member of this year’s Show Committee or me know.

The Board met in late January to plan most of our activities for 2017 and the first several months of 2018. Please see page 44 for an overview of the events planned. If you don’t see something that you’d like the Club to pursue, please let me know as this is YOUR Club and we want to be sure that

there is something for everyone! In addition, we held our Working Dog Planning Meeting on January 15th, and you can find the minutes of that meeting with details about upcoming draft and (hopefully) water practices, as well as draft and water tests on pages 40 to 43.

Directories for the 2016-2017 club year were mailed out in early December; if you didn’t receive your copy, please contact Membership Chair Heidi Forrest at [email protected]. We have a total of 57 individual memberships and 89 family memberships and represents a 5% increase over last year which may be due to our increased presence on social media. We are hoping to continue to update and improve our website, and we are also working to post more regularly on our Facebook site. Approximately 30% of our members are also members of our national organization, the Newfoundland Club of America (NCA). I would encourage you to explore their website at www.ncanewfs.org and consider becoming a member. The link to their membership application packet is http://ncanewfs.org/members/pdfs/NCAMemPacketrev12.14.pdf.

Enjoy this issue of Pawprints and reading about our fall draft test, Regional Specialty and annual Christmas tree pull. Special thanks to Ray Shapland for volunteering to chair the Christmas tree pull event this year. Also in this issue are details about our upcoming annual dinner, spring draft test, land-work seminar, and our regular rescue report. Plan to join us at some of our events this year, and feel free to submit information for publication to our Editor Helen Do at [email protected]. Everyone would love to hear about Newf-friendly activities, restaurants, parks, beaches, etc.

Newfondly,

-Karrie Cook

Sebastian’s Roo by Belinda Green

Greetings Newfoundland Friends,

You might know of my Newfoundland Sebastian from our YouTube Channel "WeLoveNewfies". Our beloved Sebastian passed away almost 2 years ago and it was a dream of mine to turn his stories into children's books. We are so excited to have completed our first book, "Sebastian's Roo". It is a short story/poem with illustrations that really capture the essence of a Newfoundland. You can find the book on Amazon.com. I truly hope it brings joy to you or your children's hearts as Sebastian did every day and continues to do through his videos.

Best Wishes in 2017

Based on a real web series, Sebastian's Roo captures the true

friendship between a little girl and her!larger-than-life Newfoundland.

This beloved dog, Sebastian, spent his days as guardian of the family

who loved him, particularly the two little girls who would become known as

“Sebastian’s Roos.”

A true Nanny dog, Sebastian not only warmed the hearts of his family

but of thousands who watched videos online of Sebastian’s tender interac-

tions with the girls. Their videos have been featured on such media outlets

as Entertainment Tonight Online, Good Morning America Pop News, Amer-ica’s Funniest Home Videos, and on the front pages of AOL and MSN.

4th Annual Christmas Tree Pull Submitted by Ellen Selsted

The kind owners of the Richfield Pines invited us again for what turned out to be a very successful Christmas Tree Pull. They very generously gave us back the shady spot we had the year before last. As a plus, we also did not have to share the day with the photo fundraising group that was there last year.

The weather was beautiful and the customer traffic was steady. Richfield Pines staff directed the customers for parking and did a great job of advocating for us to have a dog deliver their tree to their car.

The working dogs present for either hauling trees, taking photos, and spreading Christmas Newf cheer were: Kodiak, Riley, Josie and Lacey Shapland, Barney, Katie and Louie McKinnon, Baloo Do, Luna Coelho-Wood, Norman Selsted, Sable Galvan and Crew Mitchell.

In attendance we had:

Ray and Denise Shapland, Mary and Daniel Wood and their 2 delightful daughters, Michelle Galvan, Theresa Wallin and her Mom, Helen Do, Kathy Mitchell and Ellen Selsted who spent their

day working for their club. Special thanks to our Chair Ray Shapland for making this event successful! To the McKinnons who made the long trip from Acton to bring their dogs and support, we appreciate you!

We had 2 EZ Ups, our Santa Chair photo booth (thanks to Michelle Galvan for providing it again this year). She and Ray did a great job of decorating our booth. Our Club Membership Information, Christmas cookies and candies to give to our guests were provided. There were questions from a few people who read about the event in the newspaper and seemed interested in joining our club.

We had the pleasure of watching an annual customer come all the way from San Juan Capistrano to purchase a 16 foot tree. They tied it to the top of their family van and hung a large sign from the side wishing all those driving on the freeway near them a "Merry Christmas!" It was a sight to be seen. We hope to see them again next year!

Our spirits were merry and our tips were plentiful. Although next year’s invite has not been received, the general impression is they love and enjoy having us there each year.

I also hear through the grapevine that Bret Selsted, Norman’s Papa, is growing out his white beard and hair to of be our Santa next year!

Peanut Butter Dog Biscuits by Becky Stoner

Yield: 24-30 biscuits using 2.5” dog bone cookie cutter These are super simple and quick to make. Brigette loves them. Bella my carnivore, not so much. During the holidays, I make a big batch, put them in mason jars, tie a pretty ribbon around the jars and pass them out to dog owners at my office. They are a big hit with all the dogs or so I hear. Treat Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups stone-ground whole-wheat flour 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup powdered or dry milk 1/2 cup quick-cooking oatmeal (not instant), plus extra for sprinkling 2 tbs toasted wheat germ 1 extra-large egg, lightly beaten 1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water, for egg wash

Directions: • Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper. • In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the two flours,

the powdered milk, oatmeal, peanut butter and wheat germ. With the mixer on low speed, add the extra-large egg and 1 cup of water and mix just until it forms a slightly sticky ball.

• Dump the dough out on a well-floured board (I use all-purpose flour) and knead it into a ball. Roll the dough out 1/2-inch thick. Dip a cookie cutter in flour and cut out dog bone shapes. Collect the scraps, knead lightly, roll out again and cut more dog biscuits.

• Place the biscuits on the prepared sheet pan and brush with the egg wash. Sprinkle with oatmeal and bake for 1 hour, until completely hard. Cool before serving.

2017 BACK TO BACK REGIONAL SPECIALTY SHOWS Submitted by Melanie Bigelow

15

PAWPRINTS FEBRUARY - MARCH 2017

Did you make it out to the Empire Polo Grounds this year for the Newfoundland Club of America’s Back-to-Back Regional Specialty shows in the Palm Springs area? If not, you missed one of the biggest and arguably prettiest dog shows in all of the Western United States, and our club has the privilege of being a part of it! This event is a four-day series of specialties and dog shows which means some of the most beautiful dogs in the country are on display the entire weekend.

The show grounds were in peak condition – absolutely beautiful; a literal golden bubble of sunshine. While the surrounding counties endured rain and inclement weather, we had beautiful vistas of snow-capped mountains and endless blue skies.

PAWPRINTS FEBRUARY - MARCH 2017

On Thursday, January 5, the Mesquite Newfoundland Club, headed up by Rick and Diane Redpath, came out again to host their own specialty which was judged by Larry E. Hansen, Jr. and Pamela Rubio.

Our very own Heidi Forrest was recognized with a rosette for her nice work with Logan in the ring. She exhibited him herself and proudly came away with the Best Owner

Handler award in Best of Breed on Thursday. Well done, Heidi and Logan!!

Our club, The Newfoundland Club of Southern California, held its Regional Specialty, our biggest show and fundraiser, on Friday, January 6, 2017. We had fifty-one Newfs entered on Friday including exhibitors from as far away as Canada. Our judges were the Newfoundland Club of America President, Pam Saunders, from Hillsboro, Oregon, (Sweepstakes) and Lynne Anderson-Powell from Amsterdam, New York (Breed). Both were ably assisted by Carlo Guthrie and Lynda White, ring stewards.

Club member Kathy Wortham’s Xander , a national competitor, handled by Kim & Gigi Griffith won Best Opposite.

Our club does something fun at the conclusion of the Best of Breed competition, is the “Properties Class” which is a just-for-fun event that any Newf (and sometimes other breeds!) can enter. Awards are given for “Best Derriere”, “Longest Tongue”, “Best Feet” etc…..with proceeds going to Southern California Newfoundland Rescue Corporation. Debbie Paxton, who doesn’t even own a Newfy, flew in from Arkansas to head that up for us and helped raise $360 for rescue. Winners received a pretty rosette, a decorative silver platter and a $5 gift certificate to RedBarn for some yummy treats.

Following the show and the fun Properties Classes is our club raffle which is a highlight for many attendees. Once again, everyone was very generous and supportive. Our tables were covered with so many pretty baskets containing some truly amazing offerings from veterinary reproductive services, toys, treats, carotid artery scans for humans, Samsung tablets and even an Apple TV! And so much more! We had some beautiful handmade items on offer as well: Kathy Mitchell very kindly donated a sweet back dog quilt made by a friend; Hunting Horn Jewelry supplied a gorgeous gold pendant with a running Newf in black enamel; former member David Brown shared his enthusiasm for our Breed by making a beautiful custom iron gate with a running Newf (won by our breed judge Lynne Anderson Powell); and our very talented club and show committee member, Ray Shapland, built a beautiful sapele mahogany draft cart that was the envy of many – even those passersby not in our club. In fact, it was won by a woman who owns silky haired goats and intends to use it for goat carting competitions!

This year we were again very well supported by our sponsors and vendors. Please take some time to look over the raffle donors sheet included in this issue of Pawprints (page 34) and please, please, please be sure to mention the Newf Club of Southern California when you visit or shop their stores and websites. We can’t thank them enough for their continued, generous support to our club. Through them and through all of you purchasing raffle tickets and coming out to support the show, we earn the bulk of our club funds for the year.

As you can imagine, it is quite an undertaking to pull this show off every year. There is no way we could do it without all of our incredible volunteers and Show Committee. We are lucky enough to have a great group of committed people who come together to organize, set up and execute this event year after year. The five-member show committee was chaired this year by Kathy Wortham and included Gigi Griffith, Denise Hatakeyama, Ray Shapland and Erin Zimmer. Dan Palmer, Ray Shapland, Kim & Gigi Griffith and Erin Zimmer came out to the show grounds mid-week to secure spots, set up tables and EZ Ups and to get our ring show-ready. Our volunteers and judges were spoiled with good food and treats throughout the day by Pat Palmer and Ellen Selsted, our wonderful Hospitality Chairs. Trophies and the Trophy table laden with lovely rosettes, the ever-popular Wilton Armetale, along with embroidered director’s chairs, crate pads and throws from GoodDogBeds, were procured by Karrie Cook, Gigi Griffith and Denise Hatakeyama and very prettily displayed ringside on show day by Karrie Cook and Denise Hatakeyama. Thank you to all who sponsored our trophies! A list of all trophy sponsors can be found on page 35.

PAWPRINTS FEBRUARY - MARCH 2017

Last but not least we would like to mention the raffle and recognize our entire raffle crew. A heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated items for the raffle and to everyone else who came out to my house for the basket wrapping party and then got up at the crack of dawn on show day to help set it all up before ring time, sell tickets, pull the raffle and clean up with me! You guys were amazing!! Special thanks to Gigi Griffith and Kathy Wortham for all the amazing raffle items they brought, procured and donated to the raffle table!

The basket wrapping party in December was lots of fun! We had music, food and champagne to keep the wrapping crew happy and full of spirit while making the baskets beautiful. Once again, my girls Pam Austin, Jean Frueh, Lynn Rezzuti and the in-it-to-the-end Laurie Shapiro were in charge of all things gorgeous and they didn’t disappoint! The veteran crew was assisted this year by Marilyn Maltby, Deborah Schuch and Erin Zimmer, accompanied by little Charlie who kept us all smiling. President Karrie Cook once again tackled the raffle catalog and basket labels (Yay!!) along with Thomasina Cannizzo who isn’t even a club member or even a dog owner but came out to socialize and to keep the baskets organized. Our Pawprints Editor, Helen Do, also jumped in with us for the first time. She kept new puppy, Trip, from eating all the embellishments and from generally creating puppy chaos amongst the ribbons and baskets. Thank you, Helen.

Fred & Jean Frueh transported the bulk of the baskets home and then out to the show site as well. Ellen Selsted and new member Terrie Wallin came out to the show early on Friday and helped Pam, Karrie, Lynn, Jean, Fred, Helen and myself set up for the raffle. What an awesome crew!! You guys did it all so well and made it so much fun. THANK YOU!!

Club member Courtney Wilson from Queen Creek, Arizona, kept our Facebook pages updated with incoming swag and vendor information, while Gigi Griffith posted raffle teasers on the 2017 B2B NCA Regionals SoCal and Mesquite FB page. Ed McKinnon, our webmaster, posted the raffle catalog and event info on our club website for us. Thanks to all of you for getting the word out online and keeping us up-to-the-minute with the 21st century technology!

So that was the show this year if you missed it but guess what? Next year it all happens again! Why don’t you consider contacting one of the people mentioned above and volunteer to take on a position or help out with something that sounds fun or interesting to you? There is a lot to do both great and small and the committees would be grateful for some new people to work with and train. If you are at all interested, now is the time to start asking questions and finding out what you might like to try your hand at. It’s a great way to learn about conformation, help the club out, make new friends and have some fun while doing it. Yes, Indio/Palm Springs is a bit of a drive but the show they put on at the Empire Polo Grounds is really worth it. It isn’t too far away for a day trip or you can make a mini-vacation out of it and stay a day or two to see the whole weekend of shows.

Seabrook Dressed for Success, a.k.a Tucker November 24, 2004 – December 7, 2016

My beautiful boy, and best buddy, crossed the Rainbow Bridge on December 7. Tucker truly was a gentle giant – he never met anyone or anything (other than an Argentinian dog which tried to attack me) he didn’t like. He loved working at Special Olympics, which he did for 6 years. He loved representing Newfs at Pet Expos, which he did 4 times. He loved participating in the local PV dog shows, earning ribbons for biggest dog, longest fur, biggest tail, etc.

Tucker did not like to swim. At the tadpole test, he failed 3 of 5 tests, but rallied to swim out to “save” me when I was instructed to yell “help dog” while out in water up to my chin. I don’t know if I was wetter from the water or from proud tears!

He did pass his Canine Good Citizen test, but I never pursued any other titles for him. Frankly, with no siblings, and only 2 cousins on the East Coast, I used him as my “crutch” for all matter of things. He came into my life just a year and a half after my husband died. My 3 children were all in Oregon at the time, and Tucker became my confidant. I always said his coat was so soft because I sobbed into it in 2011 when my youngest son died, and again in 2014 when I lost my firstborn son.

Maggie, my rescue Newf, and I are devastated. She is mourning to the point of not wanting to eat much or to play. She sleeps near the front door, expecting him to come home. I am so grateful that NCSC allowed me to rescue her 9 years ago, and am doing everything I can think of to help her past this sad time. Please keep us both in your thoughts.

Draft Test Article By Jo Ann Stark

December 11, 2016

Judges: Debby Rothwell and Erin Zimmer

Our club held the fall draft test at O’Melveny Park in Granada Hills California on December 11th. It was a nice cold overcast morning which is great for carting. Our Newfoundlands love cool weather and the cool crisp air makes for good working conditions. Both dogs and handlers were up early and ready to go, the stewards were on hand before dawn to help with set up and Heidi Forrest our photographer was on her feet all day taking some amazing pictures. Because of the hard work by our very experienced stewards, the day went smoothly and the test was a success. There were 8 entries and 4 teams passed, giving us a 50% success rate. It was a delight to have as our judges Debby Rothwell and Erin Zimmer. Their experience and dedication to a successful test was appreciated by all. This was Erin’s first judging assignment and she did an excellent job.. The handlers put many hours of hard work into getting ready for this test and it showed in how well all the teams worked together. I want to thank our judges, stewards and exhibitors. Without the dedication of everyone we could not have had such a successful test!

Hope to see everyone at our Spring test

RESCUE REPORT

Rescue had a great presence at the recent NCSC Regional Specialty dog show in Palm Springs. Thanks to the efforts of the Show Committee, Rescue had 50 feet of ringside tables for our logo merchandise booth. There was plenty of room to show off our T-shirts, sweatshirts, bibs and books. NCSC member Brenda Green (former foster mom) donated dozens of copies of the new children’s book about her dog Sebastian “Sebastian’s Roo” and it drew lots of interest. On Thursday, the day before our show, our dedicated return customer

“the Poodle Lady” was making sure we would have our booth so she could stock up on her favorite T-shirts! With $150 worth of T-shirts she should be set for the year. It was lovely to meet so many kind people/customers who were interested in Newfoundland Rescue. Many hands made light work setting up Rescue’s “store” and also packing it up in an orderly fashion to await our next sales opportunity at the NCA National Specialty in Oregon.

Between the show and the raffle extravaganza was the Properties Classes – Gigi Griffith’s brainstorm for Rescue fundraising. Dog owners made a rescue donation as their entry fee into fun classes like “best butt” and “sweetest face.” Kathy Wortham and her sister Debby (with that irresistible Southern drawl) are masters at talking people into entering the classes for a good cause. Rescue was the winner with $360 in donations.

Holiday giving: Frank and Deanne Pedroni make a donation every year in honor of their rescued brown beauty Mawgan. They always thoughtfully include a current photo and an update on how she is doing. Pamela Piller made a generous end of year donation, as did Carol and Dennis Snyder. Memorials: Kathy Mitchell donated in memory of a special working dog – Mystie – owned and

loved by the Bigelow family. Ben and Linda Henry donated in memory of their little Pug named Peanut and said “she was an honorary Newfie and a good sister to (Newfs) Hannah and Lexie.” I must add she was also a welcoming ambassador to the Newfs the Henrys fostered over the years.

Donations along with club dues are still coming in. A big thank you to Hank Gifford & Gloria Lee, Shoji & Suzanne Hattori, Jeff Longmate & Mary Yui, Grant Nakano, Alex Rose & Rob Meadows and Nancy Theroux. But enough about money – here are the dogs’ stories!

LOUIE - adoptedLouie came to us out of the Long Beach shelter with the help of Becky Stoner. After a relatively minor medical procedure, the McKinnon family decided they could foster him for us. Louie and their boy Barney (a SCNRC rescue himself) hit it off, and their older

girl Katie was probably glad that Barney had found a lively playmate. Lucky Louie got to go to Tahoe for Thanksgiving and Ed McKinnon wrote: “On our trip to Tahoe, we stopped behind a gas station to give the dogs a rest break.  Katie, Barney and Louie were gathered around their water bucket taking turns drinking when an off leash Chihuahua charged right into the group, yipping like they do.  Much to our surprise, the stranger was accepted like an old friend.”

So Karrie and I strove to be patient until the McKinnons realized they had failed foster parenting – AGAIN! Here is Virge’s note which came along with Louie’s adoption contract: “Louie is a wonderful dog. I’m so glad none of those things he was supposed to be (food aggressive, men aggressive, marking) were true.

Though, funny story . . . . . The day after we called you to adopt him, he was really, really wild. I’m blaming it on the cold . . . . He actually was running around the property (the

zoomies) and in the house like crazy, he actually jumped up on me and almost knocked me down. He has not done that before or since.

Plus he did pee in the house twice, something he had not done since day one and has not done it since. I kept telling him he could still be a foster if he wasn’t careful. I just think he knew he had us hook, line and sinker. Silly boy. I think he knew he was home to stay.

Louie and Barney play together like they have known each other forever. Katie likes him too but sometimes looks at me like, ‘really, another one?’” Congratulations Ed and Virge!!!

MAVERICK - adoptedThe Marlow family was SURE they didn’t want three Newfs and they were just fostering Maverick. But something happens to you when you pour your heart into a foster dog. They transform into something

wonderful under your care and you just have to see where that leads. Russ said his wife fell in love right away and I’m sure their 4 boys were all for Maverick staying, but for some reason Russ just wasn’t excited

about keeping a dog who would stand ON TOP OF the dining room table!!! Maverick must have figured out that if he could win over Dad he could stay, and we got a text right before Christmas that the Marlows would be a 3 Newf family (all SCNRC rescues.) Congratulations Marlow family!

RESCUE UPDATE – Barney Shapiro Barney will turn 10 on February 13, the same day as Barnett “Barney” Shapiro for whom he was named. Barney’s best quality is that he is happy every minute of every day. He came into Rescue at about 18 months old from a first owner who loved him but was clueless. For example: hot dogs are not a balanced diet for a Newfoundland puppy! Barney’s high energy level is definitely not what attracted us to the breed, but after a stay at Chez Shapiro for quiet recovery from orthopedic surgery, we knew we would find a way to make it work. Barney is silly and joyful and makes us smile. He loves riding in the car so much (he enjoyed this with his first owner too) that I say he would be happy if we became homeless so he could live in the car every day. Thanks to the training guidance of Kathy Mitchell and Debby Rothwell, Barney earned a draft title on his first try! After Barney showed off his instincts at a Water Work Seminar he had several club members asking about his availability as a trainee. He wound up training with Karrie Cook and earned his Water Dog title, also on the first try! My favorite thing I’ve heard said about Barney is “not only will he beach the boat, but he’ll pull it right up onto the trailer!” At nearly 10 years old he remains energetic, enthusiastic and STRONG! While he was not the dog we thought we wanted, I can’t imagine our lives without him.

RESCUE UPDATE – Ben Cecil

Hello Karrie, This is Lindsay and Jason Cecil.  We adopted Ben, formerly Zorro/Chaos back in December 2008.  We wanted to make you aware he (Ben) passed away last Friday, 1/6/17.  It was very unexpected but quick and at home.  Ben was an amazing part of our family.  We are so thankful for his unconditional love and being the most loyal family member.  We miss him and are learning to adjust without him being around.  So many people commented on how good he was for a rescue and we simply replied with how good he was in general in spite of being a rescue.  While his loss has definitely left a hole in our hearts as well as those who met Ben, we are so extremely thankful that he was part of our lives.

We want to thank you and the rescue for bringing Ben into our lives.  As painful as his loss is, we are so thankful for the years we had with him and would have it no other way.  Ben was with us during so many milestones, such as engagement, marriage, and first time homeowners; he was truly a member of our family.

Thank you once again for what you do and we hope to be in contact with you in the future. Warmest Regards, Jason and Lindsay
