Fabulous Fridays
We’re happy to introduce Fabulous Fridays at DPL! This will be a once a month program for any homeschool kids to discuss books, give presentations, experiment with science, etc. Think of it as a catchall! Our first meetup will be Friday, February 28, 2014 from 1-2pm. The theme is Things You Love. Do you consider yourself an expert on something? Have a collection? A favorite book to share? Bring it and yourself! We’ll also have an activity or two planned.
TAB MEETING
CHECK IT OUT TEENS
Wednesday, February 19th 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
This is our monthly TAB meeting. Everyone in
grades 6-12 who has an interest in teen ma-
terials collection, programs, and activities of-
fered for teens and “tweens” should consider
being part of the Teen Advisory Board of
the Danville Public Library. We are always
looking for new members! All of our meet-
ings are open to everyone in grades 6-12.
We do fun activities at most meetings, plan
future programs and activities, develop and
refine our teen volunteer program, and par-
ticipate in community service activities in ad-
dition to helping with other programs of-
fered at the Danville Public Library. Mem-
bers are not expected to attend every meet-
ing or every event. Once on the board, you
will receive monthly information from our
meetings even if you are not able to attend.
It is my hope that we would develop a large
enough group to have at least 8-10
(hopefully more) members at each meeting
and 20 (hopefully more) members on the
board. Serving on this board looks great on
college applications and job applications.
Those students who participate regularly in
TAB, for 6 months or more, can request per-
sonal letters of recommendation from Kris.
Please feel free to bring friends with you to
meetings. For more information, call or email.

EXPLORING ALL THE
OPTIONS FOR THE YEAR
AFTER HIGH SCHOOL
GRADUATION
Please join us to explore ALL of the options you
have available to you for the year after
graduating from high school. Of course,
everyone is telling you about going straight
into a 4 year University and that is a great
path for some students but there are all kinds
of choices open to graduating seniors. Please
join us to learn about all types of colleges,
trade schools, and other choices including
joining the armed forces or taking a GAP year.
Some students choose to take a planned year
off before starting college or joining the
workforce. We will have speakers with non-
traditional education and career paths. All high
school students and their families are invited.

AUTHOR VISIT PHILIP RIGDON Wednesday, February 12, 2014 From 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
Author Rev. Philip Rigdon from Avon,
Indiana is here to discuss his new
fantasy book Under the Bridge to the
Seeds of Light. This book is written
for middle and high school age
students but everyone is welcome to
attend. Please join us.
Philip Rigdon is a pastor and teacher. He has lived and ministered in Mexico and the Republic of China, teaching in Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. His teaching experience in the United States includes junior high social studies and adult education. He and his wife, Jamelyn live in Avon, Indiana, with their pet chinchilla, Sunshine. Philip currently serves as pastor of Our Shepherd Lutheran Church and School in Avon, Indiana.
REGISTRATION IS REQUESTED BUT NOT REQUIRED
Someone or something under the bridge took Douglas Jenski. Weeks after his disappearance, neither his family nor the police can find him. Now, without a plan and unsure of what they will find, Rick, his sister Edie, and friends Simo'n, Ahn, and Ox venture under the bridge after their missing friend. In Under the Bridge to the Seeds of Light the young friends discover a place much like home, and yet completely different at its essence. The five must evade capture by the Rayaim—dark, hooded creatures with the power to draw the very life-light from their victims. They are puzzled by the mysterious Mr. Warner, a solitary, blues-playing neighbor who offers some answers, but just as many questions. In the search, each friend will learn more about themselves and what they are truly capable of, which turns out to be more than they could have ever imagined! When the rest of the group is crushed and dispirited, will one friend find the strength to do what is necessary to prevent certain doom?
THURSDAY FEBRUARY 13, 2014 FROM 4:30-6:00
Love can stink! Okay, now that I have your attention! This celebration isn't totally anti-valentine's day (although we do deface some romance book cover art and we will have fun decorating some broken brokenhearted cookies), it is more a celebration of the individual. Whether or not you have a significant other, please join us for this event. We will play games, do some crafts, listen to music, have treats and just celebrate the individual in all of us. The program is for students in grades 6-12, please register.
Love Stinks: ANTI-VALENTINE’S DAY PROGRAM
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 27TH 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
This is our monthly Anime and Manga club for 6-12 grade students. Registration is requested but not required. We take turns bringing in anime to watch. We do crafts, have snacks, play games. Every month it is something a little different; please join us.
(DRESSING UP IS OPTIONAL)
Youth Services of Danville-Center Township Public Library will be hosting a "Teen Late Night" at the library on Friday, January 24h, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. to break up the January “blahs”. Teens should plan to arrive at 6:00 to sign in and get started on some games. The library will provide some snacks but we would like the teens to each bring a favorite dessert to share with the group. Please eat dinner at home before you come to the library. We plan on playing video games, making crafts, playing board or card games, listening to music, and enjoying large group activities like werewolf, the cup game, and hide and go seek and much more. This program is for students in grades 6-12, and we require a permission slip signed by the parent or guardian with a Danville Library employee as a witness. Checking out library books will not be allowed at this time. We require that parents deliver and pick up their children. Children will not be allowed to walk home. The program will end at 10:00pm. If a child has not been picked up by 10:20pm, library policy requires we notify the police. If someone other than a parent will be picking up a child, we must have their name in advance and we must see picture identification. Please, Please register for this event; I need to know how much food and other items to purchase.
We’re excited to announce the launch of the
Danville Public Library’s very own Minecraft
server! Join us on February 18th from 6:30 PM to
7:30 PM for our kick off party. Come in and
have some cake, win some prizes, and of
course play Minecraft! This is just the beginning
of our programming using Minecraft so stay
tuned to find out more information.

Rachel Kalama, a spirited seven-
year-old Hawaiian girl, dreams of vis-
iting far-off lands like her father, a
merchant seaman. Then one day a
rose-colored mark appears on her
skin, and those dreams are stolen
from her. Taken from her home and
family, Rachel is sent to Kalaupapa,
the quarantined leprosy settlement
on the island of Moloka'i. Here her
life is supposed to end---but instead
she discovers it is only just beginning.
With a vibrant cast of vividly realized
characters, Moloka'i is the true-to-life
chronicle of a people who em-
braced life in the face of death.
Such is the warmth, humor, and
compassion of this novel that "few
readers will remain unchanged by
Rachel's story" (mostlyfiction.com).
Don Quixote has become so en-
tranced reading tales of chivalry
that he decides to turn knight errant
himself. In the company of his faith-
ful squire, Sancho Panza, these ex-
ploits blossom in all sorts of wonderful
ways. While Quixote's fancy often
leads him astray—he tilts at wind-
mills, imagining them to be giants—
Sancho acquires cunning and a cer-
tain sagacity. Sane madman and
wise fool, they roam the world to-
gether-and together they have
haunted readers' imaginations for
nearly four hundred years.

DPL ARTIST OF THE MONTH Ron Shimanek
I grew up in Wisconsin and have a background in electrical
engineering and quality science (BSEE from the University of
Wisconsin and MSEE from Purdue University). After graduating from
the UW, I began my design engineering career in 1968 at Delco
Radio ( which became Delco Electronics and then Delphi Automotive
Systems) in Kokomo, Indiana. In 1980, I moved to Singapore as part
of a five person team to start an engineering and manufacturing
subsidiary of Delco Electronics. I lived in Singapore for nearly five
years and then returned to Kokomo as the Director of Quality
Systems. I retired in 2000 and moved to Danville in 2003.
I started taking photos when I was eight years old using simple
cameras; I began using a twin lens reflex and a 35 mm camera in
high school when I was the newspaper and yearbook
photographer. At this time, I had my own darkroom and developed
all of my own negatives, slides and prints. After graduation from
college, I continued to pursue my photographic hobby using various
35mm cameras. In Singapore, I took advantage of the great
camera prices to acquire a lot of photographic equipment and to
take thousands of pictures and slides of the Singapore experience. I
moved strictly to the digital format in the late 1990’s.
My peak photographic output occurred when I lived in Singapore
and traveled throughout Europe, Asia, New Zealand and
Australia. During that time, I traveled to more than 30 countries and
the newness of each experience made for many great photographic
opportunities.
GENEALOGY NUTS
MONTHLY MEETING
Monday, February 10th
1:30 PM Program Room
This month we will continue to learn about Midwestern archives and libraries. We explored six libraries in Illinois at our January meeting. There are many well-known libraries and archives in our area that researchers should investigate before they say “nothing more can be found on my families.” The websites give a window into their collections and a trip to the “brick-and-mortar” buildings will provide more information. Midwesterners are not afraid of a drive to a library. Many of these
libraries are less than a day’s drive away. In some cases, the drive is only a few hours.
We will explore some of the unique features of these libraries at our meeting. Come and enjoy learning about some new resources that might answer questions about our troublesome ancestors. We all have ancestors who seemed to make sure they left as few tracks as possible.
If you are a new resident in the area, come join our group. We are quite willing to try to help you with your research. Someone in our group may be researching the same families you are researching. At our meetings, people have met family members they did not know existed.
Membership Research Help
Members of the Wa-Pe-Ke-Way chapter
of the DAR will be available in the
Indiana Room to help potential
members with their family research on
Saturday, March 29 from 9:00 AM to
1:00 PM. They will answer questions
and assist with the research needed to
become a DAR member. This help is one
–on-one. You will be guided through the
DAR Internet site for help with your
research if you already have a family
member in the DAR or think you have a
family member in the organization.
Gentlemen are also welcome as the
research will help you join the SAR. If
you would like more information, please
contact Rose Ann in the Indiana Room
as she is a member of the DAR. Rose
Ann can help you with your research if
this date is not convenient for you.

Do you want to start tracing your family roots?
Do you know what to do with a family group sheet? Do you know how to fill out a
pedigree chart? Have you heard of these forms? Our workshop will introduce
you to these basic forms in genealogy research and get you started with your
family research. This is a very addictive hobby.
You will learn how to begin the research process at the Danville Public Library. In
the spring, we will be offering a workshop for beginners. Please contact the
Indiana Room to have your name placed on the list of interested persons. The
date for the workshop has not been set but we can tell you that the workshop will
be on a Saturday morning in April or May. We want to be past the possibility of
snow and a cancellation of the workshop due to weather.
We need to know if we have people interested in attending a workshop for
beginning genealogists.
