The future of cardiovascular care will be steered by artificial intelligence and wearable mobile devices, according to articles published in The Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Every stage of patientcare will be enhanced by artificial intelligence, according to Joel Dudley, director of the Next GenerationHealthcare Institute at Mount Sinai. “AI will steer research, diagnosis and selection of therapy,” he said.“The next step will bring technologies to a clinical setting.”

In areas of patient health improvement and health-care delivery, digital health applies information toproduce solutions. These technologies have the potential to streamline research while saving money;however, delays in their implementation are often the result of concerns regarding data quality, patientsafety, and privacy.

Meanwhile, wearable mobile devices will continue to help manage heart problems. It takes a personalcommitment to a heart-healthy lifestyle of diet and exercise, medication, and self-monitoring to manageheart health. It is here that ever-increasing use of mobile devices and “wearables” have made 24-hourhealth monitoring a reality for so many–especially those with atrial fibrillation, a heart rhythm disorder.

The authors targeted AFib, in particular, which is hard to detect and difficult to manage. Office visits andshort-term monitoring only provide limited information on the presence of the disease, but mobile health(called mHealth) will offer a more complete picture that can help prevent strokes, control symptoms, andreduce hospitalizations. According to Dr. Michael McConnell, a Stanford clinical professor, the medicalcommunity has just begun to embrace the reality that health takes place outside the hospital and clinic.New technologies, he said, will transform cardiovascular disease prevention and management.

Over a billion people in China and millions around the world will celebrate the Chinese NewYear – the most important of Chinese holidays – starting on February 4th in the west, coincidingwith the new moon. Countries in Southeast Asia celebrating the occasion include China,Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Chinese New Year is also celebrated inChinatowns and Asian homes around the world. It’s considered a time to honor deities andancestors and to be with family. The event always sparks a rush of travel that the New York Timeshas called,

2019 is the Year of the Pig and Each year is associated with one of 12 animals in the Chinesezodiac. Chinese New Year celebrations traditionally last 15 days, from the first day (during a newmoon) to the 15th day (next full moon). Each day holds a special significance that varies accordingto local traditions. But first, before the arrival of the new year, homes are thoroughly cleaned tosweep away ill fortune and to welcome good luck. On New Year’s Eve, there are family gatheringsto celebrate and enjoy lavish traditional feasts, and to greet the new year with fireworks at midnight.

In the days that follow, festive dance parades are held featuring colorful dragons or lions, ceremoniesare held to pay homage to deities and ancestors, children receivemoney in red envelopes, gifts are exchanged, extended familymembers visit each other, and there’s more traditional feasting.

The celebration culminates on the 15th day with the LanternFestival; on this night of the full moon, families mingle in thestreets carrying lighted lanterns, often creating a beautiful lightdisplay. –EarthSky.org

Charlotte, known to family and friends as “Tuttie”

(pronounced “Tootie”) is from the small town of Las

Vegas in northern New Mexico. The colorful history of

her birth town surely influenced Charlotte’s pent for

festivity and appreciation for flair.

Born October 24, 1935, Charlotte married at the

young age of fourteen and soon started raising her

family of six daughters and one son in Albuquerque,

New Mexico. Music and dancing was an important

part of Charlotte’s life, and her family fondly

remembers their father encouraging Charlotte to sing

on the 4-hour drive from Albuquerque to Raton,

New Mexico to visit grandparents. Indeed, Charlotte’s

voice was beautiful and her favorite  Spanish and

country western songs could be heard down the street,

delightfully combined with the wafting smell of her

home cooking -- all traditional New Mexico foods.

Charlotte cooked fresh, delicious meals every day for

her large family. Charlotte would play music, dance

in the living room, and taught all her children to be

good dancers.

One of Charlotte’s favorite hobbies was costume

making. She made all of her children’s Halloween

costumes herself, and when her oldest daughter

married, Charlotte had crafted the beaded head-piece

for the veil, ring-bearer pillow, and bible cover, which

were so beautiful that a bridal store asked her to do

this professionally. As Charlotte’s children grew up

and left the home, Charlotte continued with her love

of costume making and her talent kept improving.

In 1967 Charlotte and her husband moved their

family from New Mexico to California, and

coincidently she lived across the street from Carlton -

right here on Cleveland Road.

In the early 1990’s Charlotte moved back to Las Vegas,

New Mexico.  Charlotte moved to The Carlton in July

2018 a few years after her husband passed away, where

she enjoys the community and staff, and her frequent

visits from close by family members, as well as local

friends.

Charlotte has a terrific sense of humor and jokes with

anyone willing to entertain her colorful sense of being.

She is truly a New Mexico girl!

Latitude 38 Degrees North

The “latitude" of a point on Earth's surface is theangle between a straight line from the equator to theearth’s center and the straightline from that point and through the center of theEarth. Lines joining points of the same latitudetrace circles on the surface of Earth called parallels,as they are parallel to the equator and to each other. The north pole is 90° N; the south pole is 90° S.The 0° parallel of latitude is the equator, thefundamental plane of all geographic coordinatesystems. The equator divides the globe intoNorthern and Southern Hemispheres.

Latitude 38 Degrees North is a circle of latitude thatis 38 degrees north of the Earth's equatorial plane. Itcrosses Europe, the Mediterranean Sea, Asia, thePacific Ocean, North America, and the AtlanticOcean. The 38th parallel north formed the borderbetween North and South Korea prior to the KoreanWar.San Francisco is at 38 degrees north.

At this latitude the sun is visible for 14 hours,48 minutes during the summer solstice and 9 hours, minutes during the winter solstice.

If we were to follow the 38th parallel east fromSan Francisco around the world we would visit someof the most important and also oddest places onEarth. At first we would go through Stockton then onthrough: Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri,Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland.

After crossing the Atlantic we would briefly visit:Portugal, Spain, the Mediterranean Sea, Italy,Greece, the Aegean Sea, Turkey, Iran, the CaspianSea, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, China, the Yellow Sea, North and South Korea, Japan, thePacific Ocean, and finally, California.

The number one brain fitness productin America’s senior communities

For those of you just learning about Dakim BrainFitness, here’s a little background.Created with the help of world-renowned scientists and physicians in the brain-

aging field, Dakim BrainFitness System is a unique, interactivecomputer-based system designed specifically for seniors. We

call its activities and exercises “SeniorCentric” because theyhave unique relevance to those of us who remember the days

when “dial-up” meant calling your friend on the phone.

Dakim Little MiraclesWhile medical research studies have shown that the kind

of ongoing cognitive stimulation provided by Dakim can reducethe risk of dementia by as much as 63%,* some of the results

we’ve been hearing about from senior livingproviders are delightfully surprising.

Martha gets her voice back.Take the story of Martha (we’ve changed her name for privacy).

She’d been living in a senior living community for several years when, about 12months ago, she stopped speaking. Her caregivers said she was only able to

mumble but even Martha could the Dakim BrainFitness System. And use it she did.Every day for a couple of weeks she would quietly “play” Dakim BrainFitness. One

day while completing a session that featured piano music, Martha turned to acaregiver named Beverly, who have been observing her, and said, “You know , Bev,

I wish I had learned to play the piano when I was a little girl.” Martha has beenspeaking ever since and continues to use Dakim BrainFitness.

which is extremely important because researchshows “the secret to successful aging

is ongoing mental stimulation.Ӡ

Henry’s Back in the GameThen there’s the story of Henry. As a result of having been recently diagnosed withearly state Alzheimer’s disease, he became depressed, gradually withdrawing from

activities of daily living at his senior living community. He wouldn’t even leave hisroom at mealtimes. The staff encouraged Henry to give

Dakim BrainFitness a try. Within two weeks, the staffnoticed a big improvement in Henry’s mood andattitude, which resulted in him regaining his self-

confidence as well as interest and desire to participatein other activities. At last report, Henry’s participation

in community life is just like other residents.

At Dakim, we will continue to ensure all Dakim brain games are appropriatelychallenging and entertaining. If you have any thoughts, feedback or anecdotes, wewould love to hear from you. Send an email to [email protected] or write at:
