Page 1 Page 1 February 2018 As fraudulent as I feel at present in calling myself President of Clearview, I still also feel a sense of pride in doing so. My health and absences during this time are well documented but this newsletter gives me a chance to thank the people who have covered my positions with great aplomb. Vice President Rick Smith has always been truly magnificent for our club and I would like to thank him for stepping into the Presidents role and done his usual brilliant job. I was looking forward to the role of Director of Selectors role this season and am most disappointed I have not done the job I was supposed to do. However I would like to acknowledge the job that firstly Peter Bishop and then Leon Harder have done in covering for me in this difficult role. Thank you both for stepping into the fray. Thanks also to the CEO, Management Board & Bowls Committee members for running a smooth ship in my absence. My biggest appreciation goes to all members who supported me, sent best wishes during my time in hospital and welcomed me back with open arms. One of the things I have been most pleased about hearing whilst being away is the new members the club has obtained. It comes a little late but I would like to welcome all our new and returning members such as Barry Charity. Best wishes to Paul Maxted & Grace Manie who have also been away from the club through serious health issues but are gradually returning to be amongst their friends. By the reports I have received the club has had what I’d call a steady year both on the green and off it. I hope everyone has enjoyed the season and can finish off the season with more than a few wins as well as some great times.

February 2018

As fraudulent as I feel at present in calling myself President of Clearview, I still also feel a sense of pride in doing so.

Thanks also to the CEO, Management Board & Bowls Committee members

for running a smooth ship in my absence.

My biggest appreciation goes to all members who supported me, sent best wishes during my time in hospital and welcomed me back with open arms.

One of the things I have been most pleased about hearing whilst being

away is the new members the club has obtained. It comes a little late but I would like to welcome all our new and returning members such as Barry Charity. Best wishes to

Paul Maxted & Grace Manie who have also been away from the

club through serious health issues but are gradually returning to be amongst their friends.

By the reports I have received the club has had what I’d call a steady year both on the green and off it. I hope everyone has enjoyed the season and can finish off the season with more than a few wins as well as some great times.

The holiday period is over and we are into the last few games of the season. Unfortunately we are not looking good on the ladder. Let’s lift for the remaining games.

The hot weather has not been good for a number of players. Please take care and keep up the water intake. Good to see David Bailey, Paul Maxted and Grace Manie back off the sick list also. Raymond Buckler has had his share of bad luck.

Congratulations to all players in the Tournaments; well done Rick Smith, a great game and also David Goodenough (Runner-up)

Champagne Breakfast is only a days away, and I am pleased announce that all rinks are fully booked. Many thanks to all those who helped donate things for the Raffle.

Good luck for the rest of the season.

Nat Kiss

Have you put your team/name in for our “Cosmo 4s Seafood Day?” This

day is good for practice and playing against different

players and a chance to play in a different position.

Tournament DirectorTournament Director ReportReport This year the entries for the Club Championships were down again,

MENS CHAMPIONSHIPS SINGLES ............................................................................... 20 MENS CHAMPIONSHIPS PAIRS ...................................................................................... 12 MINOR SINGLES.............................................................................................................................. 14 MIXED PAIRS ..................................................................................................................................... 8 TOTAL ENTRIES 54

There was not enough entries for the LADIES PAIRS ........................................................................................................................................ 2 LADIES SINGLES ................................................................................................................................. 3

This year the Committee tried a new format with the Championship Singles and Pairs, by playing these events on an allocated day. The Minor Singles and Mixed Pairs were also to be played by allocated dates.

Was this a problem? Please will you get feedback about this to the Bowling Committee so that the next season, we can encourage more entries. The Club Championships are a way of extra practice and you get to play against different players in a different format to Pennants. The Two-Bowl and Triples events were deleted this year. Do you want them reinstated? Perhaps we need to consider an Over 60, Over 70 and Over 80 competitions to encourage more entries.

Despite the problems with our numbers this season our Saturday sides should maintain their Divisions and depending on results for the remaining matches, Divisions 4 and 5 could sneak into the final.

Wednesday is also looking OK with Division 4 Central Red on top at this stage. Division 4 Central White has suffered due to lack of numbers but after a rough start and a few forfeits they have filled a team every week. This is with the help of ladies who willingly front up each week, a few Night Owls players and even a school student. A special mention to David Armstrong who has made many phone calls each

week to fill the holes left by players in the higher Divisions.

Thursday ladies of 2 North should maintain their Division also.

A special mention to those players who got a phone call at the last minute who made themselves available so the Club didn’t have to forfeit.

The Selectors are up for

re-election.

I’m not doing it.

They don’t know what

they are doing!

But isn’t why you should stand? They need your expertise.

Selection is always the hardest job in any Club; the people who put their hands up to do this job may not get it right, but at least they try. I believe from this season’s experiences, the Club needs to take a long hard look at how Selectors are chosen, how many are chosen and also redefine both the Director of Selectors role and the role of the Selectors. How can these roles be made more appealing for next year’s volunteers?

The quote, “The Selectors don’t know what they are doing” is not good enough without backing it up with

constructive ideas. All members are encouraged to have input to this discussion.

The Suggestion Box has had very few items pass through it, so does this mean everybody is happy with what’s going on.

With only a few weeks to the end of the Pennant season let’s

I’m only interested in one thing...

If everybody thinks like you, be wary of the consequences.

On behalf of the Clearview Bowling & Community Club, I would like to congratulate our long-time sponsor and Councillor Carol Martin for her recent OAM Australia Day Award.

Carol has been nominated as the SA Best Party candidate for the seat of Enfield for the upcoming State Elections. As a result, Carol has taken three months leave from the council but is still interested in local issues if anyone has a problem.

She has been a sponsor of our club for over 15 years and has represented our club to the council, helping to liaise with many council issues and grants. Carol has been involved in and is an advocate for many disability bowls causes represented at Clearview.

David Bailey Honoured

Disability Recreation and Sport S.A. (the organization that runs the

Wombats) recently honoured David Bailey with Life Membership for his over 30 years of service to their Lawn Bowls Team and the organization.

David started at Wheelchair Sports S.A. (now DRSSA) at the age of 16 and was soon appointed as coordinator of the Bowls Team. During this time the team raised its profile by obtaining sponsors like Scout Recycling and by adopting the Wombats team name. The team also took ownership of its fundraising and day to day running, including obtaining a coach.

The team had a lot of success at National Competitions during this time and had numerous members represent Australia.

From

Firstly “Congratulation” go to Alex & Ashley Nisov on the announcement of their family extension. I have heard that Great Nana Natalie is thrilled. We all wish Ashley good health. Well done for David Bailey in receiving Life Membership from the Disability, Recreation, Sport SA for all of his hard work. Great to see Paul Maxted and Grace Manie out practicing on the greens, does this mean we will see them in the Clubs colours soon!! Since our last Newsletter we have Trevor Moffat and Allan Freeman (still with his moonboot) back playing Pennants.

Still on the “Thinking of You list” is Barry Droegemueller. Rex Martin is recuperating and is on an enforced rest so we wish him well.

Lyn Armstrong also is on an enforced rest and we wish her well, also our thoughts are with David as he takes over the laundry,

kitchen etc with Lyn’s advice from the chair.

We welcome Barry Charity back to the Club, he has already made his mark around the Club with rejuvenated boundary pegs, safety grips and new decals on the mats and the printing of the new sign on the roof. Have you noticed we now have two mat trolleys? There is one for A, and one for B green. This will make things easier and not so heavy. Thanks go to Graham Hitch and his expertise with his welder. Congratulations to our newest nonagenarian Jack Paton who turned 90 in December. 1948 was a good vintage with Tom Ford and Leon Harder turning 70.

Jack Bruton celebrated his 89 birthday last week; he’s not old yet just practising for when he’s 90.

We also thank Ron Wishart for solving a 5 year mystery, in finding the MISSING REMOTE. Thank you Ron.
