As we move on and hope the snow now stays on the mountains, not at sea level, one is getting that “boating feeling”. The Vancouver Boat Show can mark the start of this new boating season. By the number of BYC members I saw at the show, if this is an indicator of interest...it is high. The months to come are shaping up to be busy ones. You will soon be receiving a Member online electronic survey. This survey will be sent out from our office, please have it submitted by February 15 th . SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING OF BURRARD YACHT CLUB MAR 21/17

Burrard Yacht Club is a not for profit , member funded Society and is governed by the Societies Act of BritishColumbia.

The Societies Act was completely rewritten and the new version came into effect on Nov 28/16.

The new version has substantially changed the Bylaw requirements that Societies must have to govern thereactions.

As a result all Societies including Burrard Yacht Club are required to amend there existing Bylaws in orderto come into compliance with the new Societies Act.

Failure to do so would strip the Club of its designation as a Society.

The Clubs Bylaws have been rewritten in order to comply with the new act and the Board of Directors haveapproved the new Bylaws for presentation to the membership at the upcoming Special General Meeting forvoting on there acceptance in replacing the Clubs existing Bylaws.

Members can obtain a copy of the new Bylaws from the office and all members are encouraged to attend themeeting and vote on the resolution to accept the new Bylaws.

Outstations Work Parties - We Want You!

There is a lot to love about Burrard Yacht Club, but a highlight for Colette and I are the outstations. Okay, maybe inmy current role I am a little biased, but it’s true. We can hardly wait for boating season and miss visiting ourfavorite spots. We haven’t made it to Silva Bay yet, but that’s on the TODO list and we are very much lookingforward to it.

I have now had an opportunity to participate in both shore work parties and at all our outstation work parties and itis always a remarkable finish, looking back on what was accomplished throughout the day, how everyone comestogether and gets the jobs done. All jobs, big and small, are tackled with a sense of purpose and pride.

Each outstation has its own unique challenges and needs while sharing a common set of maintenance requirements. The reality is that the club needs members to participate and help in the maintenance, repair and new projects at theoutstations. Together with our fine maintenance group, Outstation Captains and myself, we are busy compiling thelist of common tasks, along with a few “special” ones to help enhance a given outstation.

Signup sheets are posted and for all the various work parties and the outstation work parties are as follows:

Pender - March 4th Clementine - March 25th Ekins - April 8th

We need all skill sets at the work parties! Common tasks include:

General cleaning Deck replacement Trail clearing/repair Pressure washing Equipment maintenance/servicing (BBQ, fireplaces)

For the Tim the Toolman Taylor types there is likely to be:

Chainsaws, log splitters, circular saws and more.

Have I mentioned that we need all kinds of skills? Regardless of skills, however we can only complete tasks byhaving enough people to do the work.

So in summary: The signup sheets are posted in the clubhouse by the office. We can and will arrange for rides to the outstation if you do not or cannot take your boat. We provide a lunch and post work party celebration We need all skill sets. We need participation.

Participating also gives you a chance to meet other members, see firsthand what is being done and what is needed andgives you a direct way to help maintain and enhance our club.

Lastly, I am always looking for input so if you have any suggestions or comments regarding any of our Outstations Iwould love to hear them.

Thanks for reading!

Reflecting on the Past.

An old sea captain was sitting on a bench near the wharf when a young man walked up and sat down. The young manhad spiked hair and each spike was a different color.... green, red, orange, blue, and yellow. After a while the young man noticed that the captain was staring at him.

"What's the matter old timer, never done anything wild in your life?

The old captain replied, "Got drunk once and married a parrot. I was just wondering if you were my son!"

Outstations - Sign the Book!

A big challenge when talking about outstations and trying to make future based decisions often centers aroundusage metrics. To that end, a friendly reminder:

When visiting the Gibson’s outstation, please remember to sign in at the office at your first opportunity - at thetime of your arrival, or if after office hours, the following morning.

When visiting the other outstations, please remember to sign the visitor book.

Thanks for reading!

A magician was working on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. The audiencewould be different each week, so the magician allowed himself to do thesame tricks over and over again. There was only one problem: Thecaptain's parrot saw the shows each week and began to understand howthe magician did every trick. Once he understoodhe started shouting in the middle of the show:"Look, it's not the same hat.""Look, he is hiding the Blowers under the table.""Hey, why are all the cards the Ace of Spades ?"The magician was furious but couldn't do anything; itwas, after all, the captain's parrot. One day the ship had an accident and sank. The magician foundhimself adrift on a piece of wood in the middle of the ocean with the parrot, of course. They stared at each other with hate, but did notutter a word. This went on for a day, then another, and another. After a week the parrot said: "OK, I give up. What’d you do with theship?"

It seems to me that no matter how much involvement we have with boats we have at some time experiencedifficulties when operating them. Penny and I have had our fair share and pass on one of our solutions.

We recently helped a fellow member untie their new (to them) 50’+ boat at a BYC outstation. The vessel wastied with bow lines, stern lines and forward and aft spring lines all done by the book. The lines were sizedappropriately for the boat and according to the book.

Like a good member, we went over to wish them a fond farewell and help them untie. The first line I tackledwas there spring line. While his First Mate (The Admiral) was on the dock and letting the aft line go. Pennyhandled the bow line. Now I am not a knot guy but I do recognize the common ones. The line I was tacklingwas double wrapped around the bull rail with a number of over and under loops. It took some time and strongfinger strength to let go. I had to pull on the line to release the tension to unravel it. Penny could not get the bowline undone without my help.

Later I talked to my Admiral about how difficult it was to let the boat go with all the fancy knot work. Therewas only a slight breeze when we helped them, but if the wind had been stronger the delay in untying thoseknots would have left their Admiral stranded on the dock while the stern end departed. Then the Captain wouldhave to have had the embarrassment of retrieving his mate from the dock.

That started me on a quest to see how seasoned sailors tie up their vessels. I was shocked to see that there weremany others that have been following the same formula as our friends. What I have found in my happy boatinglife is that it’s important to keep the Admiral Happy. I think most First Mates get my DRIFT! Leaving theAdmiral on the dock does not cut it. The same goes for taking a new boater (her/him) out in the briny in a stormunprepared.

Wherever possible the first line to tie on docking is a short midship spring line. Why you ask? In most casestime is of the essence and doing this will allow the Captain to use the ship’s power to move ahead or astern andcloser to the dock with the use of the rudder and prop wash. FYI we do not have thrusters, but they are high onour wish list.

Now this is the important part! Wherever possible the person catching your lines should loop it around a cleat orunder a bull rail and hand it back to your boat and you should tie it off short. Do not double rap the line as thiswill jam the line and will not allow it to be adjusted in and out. Generally the next line would be the stern andlast the bowline. The lines are passed back under the bull rail to the boats cleats. This acts as a double purchasejust as a block and tackle would, giving you greater procurements to haul the boat in from on board. When thelines are returned to the boat this will double your line strength. If when departing you are in a hurry or understress, the lines are much easier to undo on board from your ships cleats rather than being on the dock andwatching your boat sail away. This also relieves you of kneeling down on wet docks, getting slivers or cement dimples in/on your knees when letting go.

The other things I have witnessed are the short lines tied to the dock, lines straight down with double and tripleties. This is very hard on the dock and the vessel if a large wash comes rolling in. Now how do I know this? Many years ago we tied in Snug Cove and it was ice cold with waves breaking over the floats. The wind wasvery fresh and we were in a panic to leave our tight quarters. Our lines were tied to the dock and had becomeblobs of ice. We solved the problem by bringing out the axe and chopping our lines loose. This was expensiveand wasteful. Had we tied back to the boat we would have been out of harm's way in the jig of time and not onthe ice rink we were tied too? We have also been in storm condition several times were it was prudent to leavethe dock and it was a lot safer to work the lines from aboard ship and not from a pitching dock. We have onoccasion been on dock when a numb brain comes along with a towering wash. Lines back to the boat allowsyou time to slack off so the rock and roll does not break the dock lines, rails and the cleats on the boat.

I’m telling you this because sometimes the obvious is not so obvious and I have often thought it would havebeen great if someone had clued me in on the tying back to the boat thing right from the beginning. This mightnot work on all vessels but it sure works for us,NOT ALL TIED IN KNOTS

BC Hydro Billing Rates

MEMBERS

There have been several questions about the newmethod of charging for hydro. BYC is charged byBC Hydro for base volumes and premium volumeswith the price charged for the latter more thandouble the base rate. The new billing method givesall mooring members an equal share of the basevolumes(after common costs) and then charges thepremium rate for any volumes over the basevolume used. By using this method we areattempting to more fairly allocate the premium rateto those berths that are using more electricity.Hopefully using this higher rate for larger volumeswill encourage those larger users to curb theirusage. If we can reduce the growth in hydro usagethen we can push out the time when we will have toundergo an expensive upgrade to our electricalcapacity. Finally, at no time does BYC chargemembers more for hydro than the cost to BYC.

The Juniors are planning a Party Sunday Feb 26.We need to know attendance 2 weeks prior, bySunday February 12.

Congratulations to TravisKleaman and wife NicoleTopic on the birth of theirthird child, Oakley BodhiKleaman. A healthy 7lbs15oz baby boy born MondayJanuary 23.

Shore Captain Report

Clubhouse Event Policy

The Clubhouse event policy as found in our BYC Policy Manual has undergone some updating and clarification inthe last few weeks. This is section 9.0 of the manual. A hard copy of the manual is available 24/7 in the front officeof our Clubhouse and on the Club website.

The main change is that the Clubhouse Rental fee has increased from $175 to $225. Originally the cleaning servicewas a $70 option but now this is mandatory and the Club is including only the cost ($50) of the cleaning in the fee.

I also need to remind members that per this policy:

“The facility is available to members, in good standing, to hold private events for themselves and immediatefamilies”. This means it cannot be rented for a friend’s event even if the member is in attendance.

In accordance with our Constitution we do allow an event to be booked by “groups in support of boating”. Anexample of this would be the local Power Squadrons.

Clubhouse Cleaning Services

The Club has had an annually renewed cleaning contract with Jani King since 2010. The service has deterioratedover recent months, possibly years, and numerous complaints have been directed towards me. We have reviewed thecontract and services with the cleaning individual and have made it understood that there are areas that arerepeatedly missed and some items and areas he does not seem to be aware of are part of the contract. Items such asthe microwave, refrigerator and oven are part of the contracted items to be maintained as is the garbage removal.

Clubhouse Event Supplies

The Club does not make available to those booking an event the dishes, glasses or cutlery. These are to be providedby the event organizer.

The kitchen sanitizer is just that; it is not a dishwasher in the household sense of the word. Anything that goes in itmust be cleaned of food scraps, etc. The intent of installing a sanitizer was to allow those running large Club eventsto cycle high demand items through quickly for immediate reuse.

Those bringing in their own dishes etc. or renting them should bear this in mind. Rental dishes, from my experience, can go back dirty.

Clubhouse Renovation Update

The clear majority of the 2016 kitchen renovation is completed with a few minor items to be addressed. I amworking toward having these items cleared by the end of February.

Page 12: February 2017 THE TRIDENT - Burrard Yacht Club · Club THE TRIDENT OF BURRARD YACHT CLUB Commodore Frank Mogridge Mugu Maru. February 2017 The B YC Tr ident • 10 Go st ic k Pl ac

The next phase(s) of the original renovation plans includes several items:

-south side wall renovations which include a built in dual side gas fireplace and folding glass doors

-removal of the inside east wall fireplace

-addition of a deck roof

-replacement of the blue carpet

-replacement of the drop ceiling tiles and lighting with something similar to the new kitchen

A small group is to be brought together soon to determine the action items, cost and schedule for these items.

Clubhouse Audio/Visual (AV) System

This system has undergone a review which has fixed bugs and provided updates. It is now at a point where a simple“Operations Instructions” can be posted. The essential item to keep this system operational is to only use the SystemRemote which is mounted in a cradle at the top of the stairs. The AV system cabinet has intentionally been lockedand all the dedicated remotes for individual electronic pieces put away.

The system has specific tasks which the remote has been programmed to operate with only a few button presses.

-Bell satellite service to any or all TV’s

-DVD playing to any or all TV’s

-Computer connection to any or all TV’s

-Wireless microphone through the audio system

-Audio connection to any device which accepts a standard jack as found on phones or iPods. Note that the newiPhone 7 does not have this jack.

Anyone renting the Clubhouse for an event will receive a brief introduction to the AV system as part of their walkthrough. Emphasis will be placed on their AV needs for the event.

If everyone follows the instructions and does not attempt to reconfigure it, then it will be a reliable system andalways ready for use. If you have a special need of the AV system, which is within the capabilities of the system, then please make it known before the event. If possible we may allow a temporary hardware reconfiguration of thesystem.

Bottle Bins

An upcoming project which could use input from members is the relocation of the blue & grey “bottle” bins” as foundoutside the workshop. “Bottles” in this discussion refers to any drink container that is refundable. As the father ofyoungsters who spent numerous hours emptying these bins and must walk by them on the way to his vessel I ampromoting the relocation of these bins. It would seem to me that they would be best located near our garbage andrecycling bins. This way they would be much easier to empty for the kids, would not be an eyesore to those on thedock, less hassle for the maintenance staff yet still be accessible for members to drop off their bottles. In the pastwhen we didn’t have a front gate this would not have been feasible as our steady stream of dumpster divers wouldonly have increased.

Shore Work Parties

Saturday, April 1st is the first. This party concentrates on facility preparation for the boating season and Sailpast.

Saturday, April 29th is the second. This party concentrates on final preparation for Sailpast which is the followingweekend plus our floats.

The sign-up sheets for both parties are posted in the Clubhouse and require 20 people each.

Parking Lot Storage

We have had good success with members asking, in advance, to be allowed to store their vessel items or tender relateditems or have work done on their tenders under the large tent in the parking lot. Though we do not have a writtenpolicy regarding this, the maintenance staff and myself watch this area carefully and are quite lenient in allowingmembers to utilize this space. The critical item is that the duration must be short, items removed on schedule and non-repeating.

Requests can be made directly to the maintenance staff; if the request falls under our guidelines then permission willimmediately be granted. If it is an anomaly or storage duration issue, then the Shore Captain will be requested tomake the decision.

Main Gate Repair

The BYC emblem on the main gate was bent out of shape earlier in the year by what I can only assume was a vehiclestriking it. It is possible that someone on foot didn’t know the code or have a key and tried to open the gate with bruteforce. Either way it cost us $770 of unbudgeted funds to have it repaired and of course Maintenance to spend the timeto have it repaired.

Meet Your Burrard Yacht Club Board

Greetings from Frank Plumptre, your Vice Commodore for the Burrard Yacht Club. Byway of an introduction, below is a short bio as well as summary of our experience on thewater.I am a retired Principal Electrical Engineer having worked for B C Hydro for 34 ½ years.During that time, I also volunteered for various technical organizations, in particular theIEEE (institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers). My parents, who both had spent time sailing, introduced me to sailing when I was in mylate teens, early twenties. After sailing lessons on Glenmore reservoir in Calgary, Alberta, with my parents help I purchased a Fireball racing dinghy. Several months later I took the

job at B C Hydro and towed the boat out to the West Coast with my 1971 Gremlin. I meet Dawn-Marie and introducedher to sailing. Good thing I had the boat – she certainly was not attracted to the car! After we got married a few yearslater, my father, Dawn-Marie and I formed a partnership buying a Sunstar 28 cruising sailboat. We have fondmemories spending all our summer vacations on this boat with the family. After 23 years we graduated to a Catalina36 MK II Sailboat. Around this time in 2005 we joined the Burrard Yacht Club. In 2013 we went to the dark sideby buying a Ranger 31 Tug.I look forward to serving you on the Board this year. Dawn-Marie and I also look forward to seeing you out on thewater this boating season!Sincerely,Frank PlumptreVice Commodore

Note from the editor.

On the January edition of the Trident which was my first, I introduced myself by way of a short bio. At ourlast board meeting our board secretary Jule Hopkins suggested that with each edition of the Trident, one boardmember do the same thing. We thought this would be a really good way for the membership to get to knowthe board. Frank Plumptre our Vice Commodore was brave enough to go first. I hope you enjoy the series.

The next Trident will be published the beginning of March. For all of you dying to see your articles in printplease submit them to [email protected] by February 23. Subjects can include boating experiences, opinions, letters to the editor, technical articles, items for sale or anything you have on your mind. I hope tohear from you.
