Friends, Today I share with you the email I received from Michelle Cowan after our SVCC youth returned from the Archdiocesan World Youth Day/Catholic Youth Convention in Seattle. Michelle—a member of Sacred Heart in La Conner--is one of our dedicated parents and volunteer youth group leaders. My thanks to Michelle and all in the Valley who share their gifts building up our youth as faithful disciples and Catholics. Fr. Tom -------------------------------- Dear Shari, Fr. Moore, and Fr. Tom,
I am fresh off the World Youth Day/Catholic Youth Convention, and before my lack-of-sleep kicks into full effect, I wanted to write a note about WYD, and our parish youth ministries. Overall it was a great weekend--chock full of learning, prayer, energy, enthusiastic youth, (and a lot of time on our knees on a hard convention floor for adoration for these mid-40s knees!). I am grateful I was able to be with them. Our kids got a kick out of seeing Fr. Moore pop in, as well as listening to and seeing the Archbishop and 2 assistant Bishops this weekend.
There were 8 youth of your youth who came for the weekend and stayed overnight at St. Thomas More parish in Lynnwood with our group. From our parishes-4 were from our Sacred Heart YG, 2 from the Immaculate group, 1 from the Burlington group, and 1 from Immaculate who does not participate in any youth ministry. Throughout the 2 days I was able to talk with each of them. Additionally, as part of Pope Francis's request, WYD had an 1+hr youth "listening session" for young adults and youth today. I (and all the youth ministers) moderated/listened to a group of youth or young adults, and took notes as they answered to questions about the church posed by the Archdiocese. The notes and answers were all given to the Archdiocese for compilation and digestion.
I feel like I have been given this huge gift of stories, information, ideas, desires, and beliefs from the youth, (as well as resources from the conference) that seems appropriate to share with one or all of you as you are the decision makers and movers-and-shakers of the Skagit Valley parishes.
Let me know what you think. Looking forward to a full night sleep! God bless,
Michelle

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?’ ‘Here I am,’ I said, ‘send me!’” (Isaiah 6:8) Every day, in little ways and in big ways, God asks, “Whom shall I send?” Whether it is someone to take on a new ministry, to give a friendly smile to a stranger or say a word of encouragement to a friend, God constantly provides opportunities to help someone in need. The next time you hear God calling, have the courage to walk through the door and say “Here I am, Lord.”
Thank you letter from St. Martin de Porres Shelter
All of us at St. Martin de Porres Shelter thank you and the Skagit Valley Catholic Churches for holding your 19th annual winter clothing drive in support of our program. Shelter residents are already using items from your generous donation of 85 boxes filled with clothing, towels, toiletries, and household goods that we received on January 10. Many thanks for the second delivery of clothing this week. We are grateful for your assistance as we continue our 34th year of providing a warm, safe place to sleep; hot meals; clothing; counseling; and other vital services for hundreds of homeless, senior men every night of the year. Your contributions help homeless people such as Thomas who is happily working with our onsite case manager, Betsy, to research permanent housing options now that she has helped clear up problems in his rental history. Thank you for remembering those folks who are often forgotted or ignored. We deeply appreciate your longtime dedication to the Shelter.
Yours in peace,
Angela Peterson Income Development/Communications Coordinator

Padre Tom.

Queridos, Shari, Padre Moore y Padre Tom,

“When violent crime impacts a community there is a temptation to respond with anger and vengeance. But the Gospel calls for rehabilitation, reconciliation, and restoration and teaches us to respect the dignity of all human beings, even those guilty of committing horrendous crimes.” “Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities” United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
“Recent history in the diocese tells us that newly ordained vicars are often moved to their own parish after only two years. And when that happens, they often receive a flood of dinner invitations that they have to turn down. We will not know for sure until April or May, but on the assumption that history will repeat itself: (1) Yes, I will try to come to dinner if we can find a night that works! [E-mail: [email protected]], (2) You would be doing me a huge favor if said dinner involved more than one family, so that I can visit with the most possible people in the next few months. Thank you to everyone who has already hosted me. You are all wonderful! -Fr. Moore”
-Fr. Moore "

We are called to be the “salt of the earth”. And just like salt, we are not made to simply be a star and center of attention. We are not made only for ourselves. Instead it is our Christian duty to enter into our world and add to it, helping to transform it into a world of grace and mercy, full of the “flavor” of God’s Kingdom. This is done, especially by the building up of relationships. It’s done by striving to touch one person at a time so as to enhance their lives and help them be closer to Christ. The love of God that we bring into our world, and into the lives of those whom we encounter, can be seen analogously as salt entering into food and enhancing it. My Catholic Life
