Dear Friends,

Today, December 16, marks the Third Sunday of the Advent season and the first day of the traditional pre-Christmas

novena. Here in the Skagit Valley churches that novena (nine days of prayer) is marked with our all-Valley Simbang-

gabi celebration at Immaculate Conception at 5:00 p.m. on December 15th and nine days of Las Posadas celebrations at

St. Charles, Immaculate Conception, and Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Las Posadas includes the re-enactment of the Holy Family’s journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem where, as St. Luke

tells us, there was “no room for them in the inn.” Sadly, the Holy Family’s experience as strangers seeking refuge

continues for the estimated 68 million refugees globally and the many homeless here and around the world. In a world

that too often turns its back to the homeless, the refugee, the stranger, we as followers of the Lord Jesus are called to be

different. Pope Francis reminded us of this sacred vocation in a 25 word tweet last summer from Pope Francis

@Pontifex

We encounter Jesus in those who are poor, rejected, or

refugees. Do not let fear get in the way of welcoming our

neighbor in need.

May these final days of Advent be a time of continued holy preparation and generous welcome.

Fr. Tom

3rd Sunday of Advent

“Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to

God.” (PHILIPPIANS 4:6)

St. Paul reminds us that our God is an abundant God, the ultimate giver of gifts. He promises to give us all that we need.

When we trust that God will take care of us, it is easier for us to share what we have been given.

“Sacred Heart Middle School and High School Group helping at theTri-Parish Food Bank last Saturday.

Sacred Heart provided 2 car loads of food for the youth to distribute at the food bank.”

Padre Tom

were subjugated and the practice of human

sacrifice was still a recent memory, the Mother of

God appeared to St. Juan Diego as a pregnant

native woman, now known as Our Lady of

Guadalupe. She sent him with miraculous flowers

Gaudete is a Latin word that means “rejoice.” This name is taken from the entrance antiphon for Sunday's Mass, which is also echoed in today's second reading from the Paul's letter to the Philippians. Some people mark this Sunday by lighting a pink can-dle instead of a purple one on their Advent wreath. It is a reminder that the Advent season is a season of joy because our salvation is already at hand. Loyola Press Sunday Connection.

Seeking Finance Council Members: We are looking for new members for our Finance Council.

The Finance Council has two roles: (1) Review our books, to

make sure the clergy and staff are being good stewards of

parish resources, and to provide advice on how to be better

stewards, and (2) To help set a budget for each year based on

the priorities of the pastor and Pastoral Council. You do not

need to be a CPA, as long as you can read a balance sheet. If

you are interested, please contact Fr. Moore at

[email protected]. Thank you!
