What’s your ice cream
personality?nYour age and personality traits help determine your favorite flavor cravingsBy Sally [email protected]; 810-629-8282 Who doesn’t love the sweet, creamy lick-ability of ice cream, America’s favorite dessert? Whether you crave the purest flavor of vanilla or a more tan-talizing flavor like dark chocolate raspberry truffle, your favorite flavors of ice cream tell a lot about you — not just your age, but also your personality. “Our older customers love butter pecan, orange pineapple and pistachio,” said Dave Durant of Uncle Ray’s Dairy-land in Fenton. “Kids love blue moon, superman and it’s an even split between kids and adults who crave our cappaccino crunch flavor. Even if you don’t like coffee, you’ll still love cappuccino crunch!” Durant added, “You’ll never see a kid order black cherry, and it’s a rare adult who orders superman.” Uncle Ray’s Dairyland makes 24 flavors of homemade hand-scooped ice cream in small batches in their own micro-creamery, plus soft-serve, flavor explosions, frozen yogurt in unlimited flavors, fruit sorbets and frozen custard in vanilla bean and chocolate brownie flavors. Overall, Uncle Ray’s top selling ice cream flavor is mint chocolate chip, which has now been re-formulated after 35 years. “We no longer use Nestle’s mini-chips,” said Durant. “We changed it to semi-sweet chocolate flakes, which melt in your mouth.” At the Ice Cream Garage in downtown Linden, salty caramel

When it comes to ice cream, you are what you eat: In most ice cream shops, vanilla is the largest selling flavor, because it’s the base of many other ice cream treats — from sundaes to malts and shakes. While it’s the most simple of flavors, its biggest fans are likely to be “color-ful, impulsive, idealistic risk-takers, emotionally expressive and successful in close relationships,” according to neurologist Dr. Alan Hirsch. His findings were noted in a recent Reader’s Digest article, following research he had done for several large ice cream companies, including Baskin Robbins and Edy’s. Interestingly, Hirsch also said that the taste for a person’s favorite ice cream is set during childhood and tends to remain consistent throughout his or her lifetime. Other personality traits associated with different flavors, according to Hirsch, include:Chocolate: You are likely to be flirta-tious and seductive, lively, charming, dramatic and gullible.Strawberry: You are often tolerant, devoted and introverted, as well as logi-cal and thoughtful.Mint chocolate chip: Lovers of this fla-vor tend to exude ambition, confidence, frugality and argumentativeness. Hirsch predicts that mint chocolate chip lovers are compatible with each other.Rainbow sherbet: Lovers of this flavor’s bright colors and fruity taste tend to be pessimistic, analytical and decisive.Rocky road: If this is your favorite flavor, you’re most likely aggressive, goal-ori-ented, engaging and a good listener.

nFenton Freedom Festival welcomes visitors downtown with new race, parade routesBy Sally [email protected]; 810-629-8282 The Fourth of July is a day of parades, barbecues and fireworks across the U.S., celebrating the historical milestone of Congress formally adopting the Declara-tion of Independence from England in 1776. While the occasion for celebration is a sol-emn remembrance, most people observe this holi-day with the excitement of family and community-wide events, including these activities planned in the tri-county area.
Fenton
The tri-county area celebrates this holiday in a big way, with Fenton hosting its annual Fenton Freedom Festival every year on the Fourth of July. The fun begins with the Queen’s Crowning on Thursday, June 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the city of Fen-ton gazebo. One week later, a spectacular Festival Ski Show will be performed by the Silver Lake Ski Club on Thursday, July 2 at 7 p.m. at Silver Lake Park. The Grand Marshal Reception, honoring this year’s Parade Grand Marshal Nick Popa, is set for Friday, July 3 at 8 p.m. at the Fenton Hotel. With the Fenton downtown Streetscape project in full swing, LeRoy Street will be closed for festival events, but activities will still be held downtown, anchored at the Fenton Community & Cultural Center and across the street at the gazebo. The Fenton
Firecracker 5K Run and the Grand Parade will both run different routes this year. “LeRoy Street will be closed, but there will be a walking path for people to use,” said Festival Chairman Patricia Lockwood. “We encourage people to come downtown.” The Fenton Firecracker 5K Run will begin on West Street behind the Ellen Street Campus, south on West Street to
Shiawassee, east on Shiawassee to Ad-elaide, north on Ade-laide to Caroline, west on Caroline to West Street, south on West Street to beginning of the race route, then run this three times. Registration will take
place online at fentonchamber.com. The community events kick off with a Pancake Breakfast at the Fenton Commu-nity & Cultural Center, with arts and crafts located on the front lawn of the center. The parade will step out at 10 a.m. starting at Industrial Way, then travel east on Owen Road to Adelaide, accord-ing to Lockwood. The parade will then travel north on Adelaide proceeding to Caroline Street, where it will go west
to West Street. It will then travel south on West to dismiss at the school parking lot. Following the pa-rade, the activities will continue with a Rubber Ducky Regatta (take the walking path over to the gazebo area), Lion’s Club chicken barbecue, Kiwanis children’s games, arts
and crafts and entertainment at the com-munity center. When the evening falls, fireworks will light up the sky along with patriotic music, at 10 p.m. at Silver Lake Park. These fireworks are one of the largest in the area, drawing up to 25,000 spectators who watch their launching from different

Holly
Thousands of people in the Holly area will be watching the skies on Saturday, July 4 at dusk for one of the village’s biggest events of the year — its annual Holly Fourth of July Fireworks Display. The show is launched at Lakeside Park off Bush Lake and Thomas Road. New activities have been added this year, including kids’ games and activities, and music presented by a local DJ from
7 to 9:30 p.m. The drawing for the Grand Prize new Harley-Davidson Softail Fat Boy will also take place at 9:30 p.m. The raffle is sponsored by the Holly Community Fund and the Vil-lage of Holly, in support of local projects. “Tickets are still on sale at the Village office,” said Holly Village Manager Jerry Walker. Tickets are $10 each or six for $50. A parking fee is charged to park at the park, but there’s ample free parking on other area streets.

By Sally [email protected]; 810-629-8282 The U.S. Flag Code provides a unified format in which to give our flag the respect it deserves. Here is a list of do’s and don’ts associated with Old Glory, the U.S. Flag.
When displaying the flag
do:• Display it from sunrise to sunset on buildings and stationary flagstaffs in the open.• Place the U.S. flag above all other flags on a single staff or lanyard.• Place the U.S. flag to the observer’s left, when flags are placed in a row, or when used during a marching ceremony or parade. State and local flags are tradi-tionally flown lower.• Make sure it is clean and well mended.
When displayed in a window
do:• Display it with the blue field to the left of the observer in the street.
When raising or lowering the flag
do:• Raise it briskly and lower it slowly and ceremoniously. • Salute the flag as it is being hoisted and lowered.• Hold the salute until the flag is unsnapped from the halyard or through the last note of music, whichever is the longest.
When saluting the flag
do:• All persons present in uniform (military, police, fire, etc.) should render the mili-tary salute. Members of the armed forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute.• All others should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over their heart, or if applicable, re-move their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart.• When the anthem is played or sung, citizens should stand at attention and salute at the first note and hold the salute through the last note. The salute is directed to the flag, if displayed, otherwise to the music.
DO NoT:• Don’t dip the U.S. flag for any person, flag or vessel.• Don’t let the flag touch the ground.• Don’t fly the flag upside down unless there is an emergency.• Don’t carry the flag flat.• Don’t use the flag as clothing.• Don’t store the flag where it can get dirty.• Don’t use it as a cover.• Don’t fasten it or tie it back — always allow it to fall free.• Don’t draw on or mark the flag.• Don’t use the flag for decoration — use bunting with the blue on top, then white, then red.

nSilver Lake Ski Club hoping to create two four-person pyramids By Hannah [email protected]; 810-433-6792 Every Tuesday for an hour and a half, anyone can sit on Silver Lake Beach and watch people on skis zip through the water, climbing on each other’s shoulders and performing stunts. The ski shows, at 16000 Jennings Rd. in Fenton, started June 3 and run until Aug. 12. Starting at 6:30 p.m., these shows run until 8 p.m., entertaining all who attend with pyramids, bare-foot skiing, jumps, and a women’s ballet line. Skiers range from 4 to 50 years old. Ski club member Sean Affrica said this is a rebuilding year and “We’re going to have a fun season.”
They’re aiming to increase attendance at the shows and looking to learn more stunts. “This year we’re trying to focus on building bigger and better pyramids,” Affrica said. “We usually do four-people-high pyramids.” Their goal for the end of the summer is performing two four-people pyramids. All shows are free and open to the pub-
lic. Fenton City does charge a fee to enter the park (see sidebar). The Silver Lake Ski Club urges people to bring lawn chairs, a picnic, and a camera. These shows started in 1960 and many of the skiers are now pro-
fessionals, but also help coach younger skiers. Affrica said a few members, including himself, have competed in Ger-many. The club has won multiple regional and state championships, placing as high as third in national tournaments.

ICE CREAMContinued from Page 2is the top selling flavor out of 20 flavors, followed closely by road runner rasp-berry, all Hershey’s brand ice creams. “We offer three kinds of cones or ice cream in a cup, and sprinkles by request,” said Beth White, whose fam-ily is managing the seasonal business in the absence of own-ers Bryan and Buffy Moelke, now of Cali-fornia. Beth, a para pro at Linden Elementary, is devoting her summer to the business from May through September, possibly taking over ownership with her husband,
Dan. It’s a family love affair with ice cream, including their kids, McKayla, 17, and Caleb, 14 who help run the business, along with other Linden school employees and family friends. The “Jurassic Smash” is the best-

nEasy-to-make drinks will have your guests feeling spiritedBy Vera [email protected]; 810-433-6823 Summer entertaining would not be complete without a selection of cool, refreshing cocktails. The following are a few examples:
Ginger Margarita The ingredients for this cool, refreshing drink are ginger beer, fresh lime juice, tequila and salt (optional). If you plan to rim the glass with salt, you need to do that first. Wipe a lime around the rim and dip the rim into the salt. Fill the glass to the top with ice. Top that with ½ cup lime juice, ¼ cup ginger beer and ¼ cup tequila. Carefully stir so not to knock off the salt. Add a splash of tequila to top it off.
Pear Tom Collins This tall drink calls for 2 ounces of pear puree, 2 ounces of clove-infused simple syrup, 2 ounces of gin, 2 ounces of cham-pagne, 4 ounces club soda, 2 sprigs of rose-mary and a squeeze of lemon juice. Take your simple syrup and add 3 or 4 cloves, heat until there are small bubbles and then set aside to steep as you assemble the rest of the cocktail. Pureed in a food proces-sor or blender one whole, very ripe pear, but only use about one-half of the pear per cocktail. Add a squeeze of lemon to the pear puree before blend-ing the ingredients to-gether. Make sure the pears are very ripe and it will make your life a lot easier. Taking into account how ripe and sweet your pears are, mix in the clove infused simple syrup with the pear puree to taste. Add in ice, 4 ounces of club soda and 2 ounces of gin; stir until all ingredients are well incorporated. Pour the 2 ounces of champagne on top as a floater. Clap the rosemary between your hands to release the oils and garnish.
summercocktails
Entertain your guests with refreshing
Whiskey Smash Simple ingredients are needed for this cocktail. It calls for fresh lemon juice, whiskey, mint and simple syrup or agave syrup. Either muddle the mint at the bot-tom of the glass or give it a good clap between your hands to release the oils. Fill the glass with ice and fill it 2/3 with lemon juice (about 3 or 4 lemons) and 1/3 cup whiskey. It is pretty tart as is so a shot of simple syrup helps to balance out the cocktail.
The Juliette This is a drink for bourbon and tea lovers. Ingredients you’ll need are 1.5 ounces of bourbon, ¾ ounce lemon juice, ¾ ounce simple syrup, 1 ounce iced tea and 5 mint leaves. Simple syrup is easy enough to make, equal parts sugar, boiling water and mix until the sugar dissolves. It is also best to take the time to brew unsweetened black iced tea in order to make the Juliette. Slap the mint to release the oils, shake with ice and serve chilled. Pour and enjoy a perfect, relaxing afternoon.
Watermelon Sangria For this beverage, you will need 2 pounds of seedless watermelon, peeled and cubed, plus ½ pound watermelon cut into balls with a melon baller and skewered on picks. You will also need
one bottle of dry white wine, 6 ounces of vodka, 4 ounces of triple sec, 4 ounces of citrus syrup and ice. In a blender, pu-ree the watermelon cubes. Pour through a fine strainer into a pitcher. Add the white wine, vodka, triple sec and citrus
syrup. Stir and refrigerate for at least two hours. Stir again, then pour the sangria into ice-filled white wine glasses and garnish with the skewered watermelon balls. Sources: Brostick.com and foodandwine.com
for everyoneCool summer drinks
nFruity combinations are true thirst quenchersBy Vera [email protected]; 810-433-6823 Jazz up your backyard barbecue or summer picnic this year by making ahead one of the following refreshing beverages:
Watermelon lemonade Ingredients include: 1-1/2 pound sliced seedless watermelon, zest of one lemon, 3/4 cup fresh lemon juice, 1/2 cup mild honey (such as orange blossom), and one lemon. In the bowl of a food processor, place watermelon and process until very smooth. Strain through a coarse sieve set over a bowl, stirring to push through any pulp. Pour juice into a large pitcher. Add lemon zest. In a bowl, whisk lemon juice and honey until honey dissolves; stir into watermelon juice. Stir in 1-1/2 cups cold water; cover and refrigerate until very cold. Serve over ice and garnish with lemon slices.
Iced fruit punch This beverage calls for 6 cups of assorted fruit juices, 3 cups ginger ale, and 3 cups seltzer water.
To make the ice, freeze juice in ice trays. When solid, release from molds and store by flavor in sealable freezer bags for up to one month. To make the punch, fill an 8-ounce glass to the top with about 1/2 cup assorted flavored ice cubes, add 1/4 cup ginger ale and 1/4 cup seltzer, and serve immediately.Source: delish.com
