I write this shortly after the release of a report from NSW’s Greyhound Industry Reform Panel that outlines the initiatives necessary to ensure the long-term position of greyhound racing in NSW.

The strong theme through the report is to put the promotion and protection of animal welfare at the centre of the new industry.

The NSW panel believes that achieving major reforms in animal welfare is crucial to the future of greyhound racing in NSW and it is necessary to build the community’s confidence in integrity.

Victoria has already been on this journey for 18 months as we near the completion of the implementation of the recommendations made by the Racing Integrity Commissioner and Chief Veterinarian Officer.

GRV has laid a solid foundation for regulatory reform and its animal welfare and integrity capabilities have been significantly upgraded. The Welfare Inspectorate is now visiting around 80 premises a week and are finding that the majority of training facilities have greatly improved.

Adoptions through GAP are on track to substantially exceed last year’s record figure and an innovative new GAP project to promote greyhounds as pets is being developed which you will hear more about in the near future.

In short, there is plenty happening that should give greyhound racing people and the community a lot of confidence in the direction of our sport.

Importantly we can be seen to be seriously responding to the concerns expressed by the community about greyhound racing.

GRV’s Investigations Unit is now working well in an independent and accountable way with other compliance and animal welfare organisations in gathering and acting on information, and I encourage anyone with concerns about the sport’s integrity to contact them as participant input is central to building strong cases for action.

Speaking of participant input, our valuable stakeholder engagement workshops are returning in 2017, while GRV’s Industry Consultative Group is now seeking new members, which you can read about on page nine of this month’s Greyhound Monthly.

There are still many issues where more concerted work is needed by GRV, the clubs and participants. Track safety continues to be a concern and whilst much has been done it is clear that further

work is required.

Importantly, to reduce race interference, the introduction of hoop arm lures, along with new catching pens and braking motors, is where we expect to make significant gains. These initiatives should be operational in most clubs by the end of April along with the completion of rectification works at the existing Horsham track.

An ongoing project is to establish a baseline for measuring data about optimum track hardness and moisture and this will be developed for use at all tracks around Victoria.

We also need to increase quality breeding to meet the demands of the racing calendar while also ensuring all Victorian greyhounds enjoy a full and natural life cycle.

I strongly urge you to read the articles on Norm Rinaldi and George Farrugia in this month’s edition. Norm and George are passionate breeders, who speak well on why now is a great time to be involved in the breeding game.

Breeding will be a key topic for industry engagement workshops that we are planning to host in the next few months, along with other issues like building industry confidence and new codes of practice and rule frameworks. This new series will be held predominately at regional clubs with participants taking the lead in designing how they will work and I will be announcing more details about this shortly.

Turning to the action on the track, this month will see one of the world’s premier greyhound racing events, the Australian Cup, return to The Meadows on 4 March, followed by the last leg of the Gippsland Carnival, the Traralgon Cup on 25 March. The carnival marks a new approach to marketing regional racing and it has been generating some great results in terms of attendance and generally promoting the sport which GRV will build on for future events.

This issue also includes the 2017 Victorian coursing calendar which culminates in the Waterloo Cup at Longwood in the last weekend of August. I think of coursing as almost like Victoria’s 14th racing club and if you haven’t attended a coursing meet yet, I encourage you to do so, as it is another great way to enjoy these wonderful dogs in action.

Norm Rinaldi has a clear message for successful greyhound breeders – keep breeding.

Plenty has happened in greyhound racing over the past two years and one byproduct of all the publicity and change has been a decline in the number of litters bred in Victoria, however Rinaldi said it is time that disenchanted breeders went back to investing in the sport.

“If greyhound breeders want the industry to die - stop breeding – it’s as simple as that,” Rinaldi said.

“If you’re in a position to breed quality greyhounds it should not even be a question of whether you breed or not. Where else are pups going to come from?”

Rinaldi, who lives in Lethbridge, most recently bred a litter last November by Fabregas out of Five Paws, the latter being part of a million dollar mating he bred in 2010 that included champion stayer Destini Fireball and Melbourne Cup finalist General Destini.

“I’m continuing to breed a few litters and I’ve been encouraging others to do the same.”

regulation of the sport has become too pedantic, and I agree to a point, but the intentions (of GRV) are right. Participants just need to take extra care (in adhering to the rules and regulations),” he said.

Rinaldi believes that increasing financial incentives is the best way to turn breeding numbers around.

“I’d like to see GRV bring back a breeders’ bonus and to increase prize money again - particularly for Tier 3 races - and it would be a lot better if prize money was paid down to fourth place,” he said.

“Over the past couple of years (wife) Janis and I have had greyhounds that have run fourth 30 or 40 times, and it would make it a lot easier for people if running fourth was rewarded. Breeding greyhounds is a costly business, and if you’re not getting the rewards it makes it very tough.”

Rinaldi said a key to getting pups to the racetrack was to encourage them to chase from a very early age.

“It’s important to teach pups to chase by doing things like throwing a ball or a toy. One of the best toys in our yards are the empty three litre milk bottles (pictured above) which delightfully blow around in the wind - they chase and pounce on them,” he said.

“Most of our pups end up being fairly hard chasers because we put the work into them from when they are very young, but whether they make it to the racetrack or not, all of our dogs end up at the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP), unless we keep them for breeding, of course.”

“I’m a huge advocate for the GAP… I always have been. Greyhounds need somewhere to go after their racing life and they make beautiful pets.”

Lara trainer Anita Courts, 27, has cracked her first Country Cup win with her kennel star Crackerjack Choc in the $67,000 Backman’s Greyhound Supplies Cranbourne Cup (520m) on February 11.

Paying a staggering $26 for the win from box two in the third leg of the inaugural Gippsland Carnival, not even Courts gave her 32-kilo chaser much of a chance against a line-up that consisted of three Jason Thompson trained greyhounds.

“I really didn’t think I would be standing here,” Courts said with tears of joy at the post-race presentation.

“Jason Thompson had some amazing greyhounds in the field

GRV Monthly caught up with TAB’s Jaimee Rogers after she flew in from Sydney to judge the Colours on Course competition at last month’s Cranbourne Cup, the third leg of the Gippsland Carnival.

Tell us about your working background?As an ex-national swimmer, a career in the sporting world was always on the cards. I always loved racing, so when a job came up at the Australian Jockey Club after I finished Uni, I jumped at the opportunity. I worked in marketing there for a year, before moving over to Tabcorp. Eight years on and I’m still here. I’ve worked across different parts of the business in a diverse range of roles. I’ve been in my current media role for about five years now and I’m loving every minute of it.

and to beat the likes of Big Flood ($2.30 Favourite), who has to be one of the most exciting young greyhounds at the moment, is a credit to Crackerjack Choc.”

The son of Cosmic Rumble and Lizzie’s Memory jumped out of box two, staying within a couple of lengths behind the leading Archie Fields (box six) and Don’t Kid Me (box seven). Strength prevailed as Crackerjack Choc proved just how important it is to have a big motor over Cranbourne’s 520-metre journey.

Crackerjack Choc eventually won by less than half a length over the Gerard O’Keeffe-trained Archie Fields ($41.70), with a further five lengths to the third-placed the Steven White-trained Don’t Kid Me ($15.70).

The trio combined for a whopping trifecta dividend of $4,982.80, while the First 4, which also included the fourth-placed Jason Thompson-trained Sleek Master ($3.80), paid an unfathomable $18,199.20.

“I can’t believe he held on,” Courts said.

Crackerjack Choc is now a winner of 14 races from 56 starts and he doubled his career earnings to $93,660 following his biggest win to date.

“We only have a small team but we work hard and this is the greatest reward.”

Although unsuccessful in the Cranbourne Cup, Jason Thompson had one reason to smile, that being a win by his exciting stayer, Burn One Down.

Burn One Down took out the second feature on the night, the Victoria Cup which is held over the 699-metre distance, stopping the clock in a track record time of 40.73 seconds.

Do you have a strong interest in fashion?Working in racing has meant I’ve always had to keep an eye on what’s happening off the track as well as on it, so I’m always up to date on my form plus what’s in trend on the fashion side. I’ve been lucky enough to judge fashions on the field at a few Country race meetings in NSW as well.

There were plenty of entries in the Colours on Course competition at Cranbourne. What was it like to be involved?It was great! I always like being a part of any new initiative that brings people to the track. Everyone went to so much trouble for their outfits and the combinations of all the box colours was great to see. I really hope to see it grow over time.

Why should people enter the final leg of the Colours on Course competition at the Traralgon Cup on March 25?It’s the perfect chance to dress in the box colour you like. Some people choose a favourite box colour when having a bet, but now you can dress in that box too. There are great prizes on offer as an extra incentive. It’s an extra bit of fun to have on the night, so why not go and enjoy it?

Tell us more about your role at TAB?As a Media Presenter I work across TV and radio platforms, plus MC industry events. As part of my role, I host “On the Lounge with Jaimee Rogers” on Sky Thoroughbred Central, plus Form Line Extra. You can also see me regularly appear on Fox Sports throughout the footy season.

After a successful first three legs, the Gippsland Carnival will come to a thrilling conclusion with the Traralgon Cup on March 25.

The carnival, which is the first of its kind in Victorian greyhound racing will finish with a Gippsland Champion Stayer and Gippsland Champion Sprinter crowned at the Traralgon club on March 25.

Chrichton Bale headlines the stayers whilst Aston Bolero is on top in the sprinters series.

However, the competition is still wide open with 46 greyhounds in contention to claim part of the $35,000 in the carnival’s bonus prize money.

Greyhounds can earn a maximum of 24 points at Traralgon next month by winning a heat (8) and final (16) of the Group 2 Traralgon Cup (525m) or the Traralgon Distance Cup (665m), with points being allocated down to fourth place in the heats and finals of each event.

Heats of the two Traralgon events will be run on 18 March, and the finals on 25 March. Nominations for both events close at 11am on Tuesday, 14 March.

The hoop arm lure system which has been trialled throughout Victoria is now set to be deployed at all greyhound racing clubs throughout the state.

A trial of the latest hoop arm lure at The Meadows demonstrated the improved safety of this method, with the introduction of this system part of Greyhound Racing Victoria’s (GRV) continued effort to ensure animal welfare as a key priority.

Warrnambool, Traralgon and The Meadows (Wednesday) will be the first three tracks to introduce the new lure system on a permanent basis. Following this the Shepparton, Geelong, Sandown and The Meadows (on a Saturday night) will operate this system as soon as the relevant infrastructure changes are implemented.

If you have any questions or concerns about this new system GRV encourages you to contact Member Services, where you will be directed to the relevant department.

All participants are encouraged to use the appropriate channels to provide feedback to GRV and be mindful that inflammatory and offensive remarks on social media will not be tolerated.

It is strongly recommended that your first option is to contact GRV via telephone (1300 227 225) or through www.grv.org.au/report-suspicious-activity.

Also in line with GRV’s key priority of animal welfare, as part of the Hot Weather Policy all kennelling will now open 30 minutes for all ‘Hot Weather Affected’ meetings, not only twilight and night meetings.

The updated policy, as well as the 2016 Transportation of Greyhounds policy is available at www.grv.org.au/policies.

In addition to this, the Greyhound Recovery Initiative (GRI) Trial is still underway and funds the cost of veterinary treatment for greyhounds that receive certain serious injuries during a race meeting.

Admission of a greyhound under the trial is subject to a referral by the On-Track Veterinarian, who will then assess whether the greyhound meets all eligibility criteria for the trial.

THE NEWS FROM HQ by Shane Gillard - General Manager, Integrity Department

The past two years have seen an enormous amount of change in Victorian greyhound racing and nothing reflects that vast change more than GRV’s integrity measures.

The GRV integrity unit is in place to ensure a clean and fair sport for all involved in greyhound racing.

We are adamant that the vast majority of people involved in Victorian greyhound racing are good, honest people who are doing the right thing. We want to continue to work with those people to identify where there are problems and who are the people who aren’t doing the right thing.

But we have to acknowledge that there are some individuals involved in greyhound racing who are tempted to cut corners or compromise the welfare of the beautiful animals who make up our sport. This is where GRV needs the people who uphold the good in greyhound racing to help us identify and put our resources into the areas that need attention.

Some of the sweeping changes we have made to the integrity arm of GRV were led by appointing decades of police experience for a team of former Victoria police detectives to proactively investigate live baiting, animal mistreatment, greyhound exports, doping and illegal collusion in the sport.

We have tripled the number of swabs taken to test for drug use and invested in new storage facilities to allow more swabs to be kept for longer as testing procedures are developed for new substances.

But for all that we set up, we can only be effective with the cooperation of you, our participants. We have seen some encouraging signs of this with people coming forward to share information via our online suspicious activity form (www.grv.org.au/report-suspicious-activity) and our new hotline, 1300 227 225.

Our team has been involved in detail in cases involving live baiting, drugging of dogs, animal cruelty and animal exporting. Many of these cases are still before the courts and yet to be completed but GRV’s perseverance and increased resources have been a key reason behind them coming to light.

It is worth noting that GRV’s work in the integrity space was acknowledged in the Bittar Review of the Integrity Structures of the Victorian Racing Industry last year where it was praised for significantly improving its integrity measures to the point that it was now a leader in key areas. This alone should give confidence to everyone involved in Victorian greyhound racing that we are heading in the right direction to ensure a strong future for the sport.

We will continue to work diligently with the RSPCA, the Victorian Government, the Victorian police and all relevant stakeholders. But nothing is more important than working collaboratively with the people who make Victorian greyhound racing tick along every single day.

We are not the enemy, but rather a friend of all those with greyhound racing’s best interests at heart and all we want is the fairest, cleanest possible landscape for the thousands of people involved in greyhound racing.

YOUR CHANCE TO JOIN THE ICG

March 2017 marks the first anniversary of the Industry Consultative Group (ICG). The ICG was formed in early 2016 by the Greyhound Racing Victoria Board to advise on significant issues concerning the greyhound racing industry.

The ICG is comprised of industry representatives appointed by the GRV Board after obtaining expressions of interest and having regard for their skills and industry experience. These representatives come from all areas of greyhound racing including owners, trainers, breeders, clubs, track veterinarians and GOTBA.

The Board refers matters to the ICG for consideration and advice and, in turn, members raise with the Board matters that are of concern to industry participants.

GRV Deputy Chair Judith Bornstein chairs the ICG which she said was an important part of the Board’s consultation with the industry.

“There is a diversity of interests among members of the ICG and a wealth of knowledge and experience. Discussions are spirited and informed by members’ knowledge,” Ms Bornstein said.

“While a number of the matters discussed are controversial, there is significant agreement on the key issues facing the industry and the actions that are required to address these issues. My involvement with the ICG has provided me with valuable insights into key issues affecting participants in the industry."

In the interest of continuity, and having regard for their contribution over the last 12 months, the Board has decided to extend the terms of existing members who were available for re-appointment. Most members were available for re-

appointment but several vacancies on the ICG Board need to be filled as a priority.

The vacancies are:

• A second representative from one of the 13 clubs. (Metropolitan clubs are represented by a current member and nominations from representatives from non-metro clubs are encouraged.)

• More registered participants with experience as an owner or breeder or trainer.

“We are looking for people who share the Board’s commitment to a strong and viable industry and who share the Board's commitment to welfare,” Ms Bornstein said.

Judith Bornstein was appointed to the GRV Board in March, 2015 by the Minister for Racing, Martin Pakula. She was a Commissioner of the former Industrial Relations Commission of Victoria and is a lawyer who has practised at the Victorian Bar. She has been a member of a range of boards and committees and has a particular interest in good governance.

She says greyhound racing’s importance to participants and the community and the welfare of greyhounds are what drives her commitment as a member of the Board of GRV.

“As a member of the Board, I have an absolute commitment to the industry and to the welfare of greyhounds. Greyhounds are not only beautiful, they are magnificent athletes and their welfare is central to the future of the sport,” Ms Bornstein said.

“Greyhound racing provides employment and enjoyment to people and communities throughout Victoria. The importance of greyhound racing to participants, communities and the economy cannot be underestimated.”

Victoria Sultana – RADB Hearing held 8 February 2017 - Failed to present greyhound ‘Hurricane Craig’ free of any prohibited substance (codeine and morphine) for an event at Traralgon on 8 August 2016 & failed to present greyhound ‘Brooklyn Cruiser’ free of any prohibited substance (codeine and morphine) for an event at Traralgon on 26 September 2016. The RADB determined the appropriate penalty to be two years’ disqualification with 12 months suspended. The RADB determined the appropriate penalty to be $1500, ($500 suspended). In addition, the greyhound is disqualified from the event.

Tony Interligi - RADB Hearing held 27 January 2017 - Failed to present greyhound ‘Inter Sandra’ free of any prohibited substance (Piroxicam) for an event at Geelong on 9 August 2016. The RADB determined the appropriate penalty to be a fine of $1500 ($500 suspended). The greyhound is disqualified from the event.

The RADB considers that the appropriate penalty on the administration charge relating to 16 June 2016 is 12 months disqualification with nine months of that period suspended. The same penalty is imposed on the administration charge with respect to 23 June 2016. However, it will be concurrent with the penalty in respect of the 16 June 2016. There will be no extra penalty for the presentation charges in respect of 16 June and 23 June 2016. The greyhound is disqualified from the events.

Norman Burns – RADB Hearing held 20 January 2017 - Administered or caused to be administered and failed to present greyhound ‘Fancy Bounce’ free of any prohibited substance (cobalt) for an event at Bendigo on 27 July 2016. The RADB considers that the appropriate penalty is 12 months disqualification with 8 months of that period being suspended. The greyhound is disqualified from the event.

Jason Formosa – RADB Hearing held 19 January 2017 - Three Animal Welfare charges relating to rules; GAR 106 (1)(d), GAR 106 (2) and GAR 86 (o). The RADB determined the appropriate penalty to be a $5000 fine and six months disqualification, fully suspended.

Gerard O’Keeffe – RADB Hearing held 18 January 2017 – Six charges relating to three Pholcodine irregularities from greyhounds 'Tough As Nails' and 'Rosco Fields'. The swabs were taken on three dates; Tough as Nails – 2 & 25 August 2016 and Rosco Fields 1 September 2016. The RADB determined the appropriate penalty to be a $1500 fine but with $500 of that sum being suspended. The greyhounds are disqualified from the events.

Peter Parr – RADB Hearing held 18 January 2017 - Failed to present greyhound ‘Bonza Magic’ free of any prohibited substance (Pholcodine) for an event at Traralgon on 1 August 2016. The RADB determined the appropriate penalty to be a $500 fine. In addition, the greyhound is disqualified from the event.

Robert Conway – RADB Hearing held 17 January 2017 - Failed to present the greyhound ‘Galloping Fantom’ free of any prohibited substance for an event at Traralgon on Saturday, 3 September 2016. The RADB determined the appropriate penalty is a disqualification of three months, wholly suspended. In addition, they imposed a fine of $2000. The greyhound is also disqualified from the event.

Sam Liuzzi – RADB Hearing held 17 January 2017 - Failed to present the greyhound ‘Fabstar’ free of any prohibited substance (6a-hydroxystanozolol) for an event at Ballarat on Wednesday, 25 May 2016. Some of our representatives have already discussed what the future looks like and we have many more meetings planned in the coming weeks to ensure that steps are taken to hear anyone who wishes to speak.

Renowned greyhound veterinarian, Dr. Chris Boemo says a cautious approach is best when it comes to the immediate treatment of potentially serious injuries.

While bandaging is the best way to treat many types of injuries, more serious ones such as dislocations and fractures require splinting as well as bandaging, ideally from the moment the injury occurs.

“Splinting provides additional external support to minimise movement at the fracture site, and if you suspect a fracture may have occurred you should bandage and splint it so that you are minimising that movement whilst awaiting definitive diagnosis (from a vet),” Dr. Boemo said in GRV’s latest first aid video, titled Emergency Splinting.

“For instance, if it’s a major sprain there is a chance the dog has also dislocated its wrist or ankle, so you should be splinting it as a precaution.”

While vets have custom made splints at their disposal, greyhound participants can use household items such as a newspaper as a make-shift splint when a vet is not around.

“Everybody reads the newspaper, and one that is fairly thick and curved as a splint will be able to provide some reasonable stability,” Dr. Boemo said.

“Applying bandaging and splinting at the time of the injury will minimize swelling because some injuries can swell up very quickly, and then once you do that you should seek veterinary attention as soon as possible.”

Dr. Boemo demonstrates how to use a newspaper as a splint in the video, and GRV encourages participants to practice bandaging and splinting on a healthy greyhound to help you in emergency situations.

Lightning Strikes Twice

AUSTRALIAN CUP CARNIVAL

Lightning Frank ($8.70) came out humming to score a commanding win in the $145,000 Temlee (525) on February 18, one of three Group 1 invitationals held on opening night of the $1.2M 2017 Australian Cup Carnival.

Having claimed the Group 1 Silver Chief at The Meadows in January, Lightning Frank made it 15 wins from 25 starts when clocking a sizzling 29.67sec for hobby trainer Mathew Wright of Allansford and claiming his second Group 1.

Lightning Frank was always going to take a power of beating after settling in front of the elite hand-picked field from box seven, and even gallant performances from placegetters Jesaulenko ($9.40) and Zambora Brockie ($4.30) weren’t enough to seriously threaten the winner.

“It’s a huge thrill just to receive an invitation to this race, let alone win it,” elated trainer Mathew Wright said after Lightning Frank snared the $100,000 first prize.

A small-time trainer and full-time fencing contractor, Wright is pinching himself at having a dual Group 1 winner in his kennel.

“He’s a once in a lifetime dog for dad (Kevin) and I. In fact, I really need to acknowledge dad, because I work full-time so I rely on dad to do a lot of the work with our dogs,” he said.

“Lightning Frank is a greyhound we’ve had to show a lot of patience with because he showed a lot of ability early on but he was often pulling up with niggling little injuries.”

Lightning Frank was bred in Nhill by Andrea Gurry and is raced by the Hashtag syndicate.

Also on the opening night of the Australian Cup Carnival, Fanta Bale enhanced her near-faultless middle distance record with a dominant all-the-way victory in the Group 1 Rookie Rebel (600m), while Burn One Down scored a dominant win in the Group 1 Zoom Top (725m).

Trained by Robert Britton, one of Australia’s most successful middle distance and staying conditioners, for the country’s

leading breeder Paul Wheeler, Fanta Bale claimed her second 600m Group 1 trophy at The Meadows, having also led throughout in the Hume Cup last October.

In a field of incredible depth, rails runner Reefton Treasure was the $3.30 favourite, with three-time Group 1 winner Dundee Osprey ($5.70), powerhouse Blazin’ Bomber ($5.80) and reserve Extreme Magic ($6.70) all well-supported.

Fanta Bale looked the likely leader and after showcasing great early speed to lead Blazin’ Bomber she refused to surrender her hard-won advantage, defeating Blazin’ Bomber by one and a half lengths in 34.16sec, with Extreme Magic running third.

“It was a super field and Blazin’ Bomber was the dog I was most worried about because I knew he had the pace to go with Fanta Bale early,” Robert Britton said.

“She (Fanta Bale) is an incredibly good beginner on the bends because she cuts straight to the fence leaving the others to get caught in the backwash.”

Fanta Bale took her record to an imposing 18 wins from just 27 starts.

Meanwhile, the Zoom Top was Burn One Down’s first victory at Group 1 level, with Jason Thompson’s freakishly talented son of Buck Fever producing as dominant a performance as you would see in elite company.

“The owners have come all the way down from Orange in NSW so that makes it all the more special,” Thompson’s wife Seona said.

Burn One Down stifled betting on the $75,000 to-the-winner Zoom Top, starting at $1.30 from box two, and the prohibitive quote proved to be spot on as he treated the best distance gallopers in the land with contempt.

The Zoom Top was Burn One Down’s 22nd win from 37 starts. The greyhound was bred by David Pringle and is owned by Danielle Pringle.

Born With a Lead in Hand

According to her mother, Margaret Thomas was ‘born with a lead in her hand’, an assessment Mrs Thomas thinks is pretty spot on.

“I can remember the dogs back to when I was four years old,” Mrs Thomas said.

Whenever she knew that her father Archie was heading to the track, the young, up-and-coming trainer would develop a ‘dreadful toothache’ to get out of school.

“By the time dad would set off I was desperate to go,” Mrs Thomas said. “He’d eventually say fine, jump in then, and we would go and catch the train, where we had to sit in the guard’s van with the dogs. That was a very long time ago now.”

The Meeniyan resident can now boast a 50-year stint in the greyhound racing industry, in which time she has been inducted into Greyhound Racing Victoria's Hall of Fame and been the recipient of the Ken Carr Medal in 2004.

She became an integral part of her ‘home track’ the Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club and served on the committee for 10 years which included a six-year term as president and three years as vice president.

“Someone asked me if I’d like to join the committee, and I said I would do anything for the greyhounds,” Mrs Thomas said.

“I then put my hand up and was nominated for vice president and finished up as president.

“At one stage they were thinking of closing the track down and I said if we all throw our hats in the ring and do the hard yards we can turn this around.

“It’s just so great to look at what it is now.”

In 1972 Mrs Thomas met her future husband Graeme who had no interest in the greyhounds aside from following a trainer called Nugget Charles around the track.

However, it did not take long for the Meeniyan man to come around, and he eventually purchased his delighted wife’s first two greyhounds for $150 … from Nugget Charles.

“These were bread and butter dogs,” Mrs Thomas said. “Cattle prices were low and the two dogs were our salvation.”

The 70s brought stellar success for the couple, including a Silver Chief win, but for Mrs Thomas the most exhilarating moment was when Meeniyan Prince defeated Eaglehawk Star in a heat of the Melbourne Cup.

Margaret Thomas will feature in the Traralgon chapter of the Greyhounds Are My Life video series which will be available to view before the Traralgon Cup on March 25.

Barry Toner is among the participants to have been recently profiled in GRV’s latest series, Greyhounds Are My Life.

The breeder and trainer from Bunyip epitomises what the series is about, showcasing that greyhound racing is more than just a pastime or profession to so many people.

“It’s become an enjoyable hobby over a long period of time and it has become a way of life,” Mr Toner confessed.

Mr Toner has bred and trained plenty of winners across the journey and he puts his success down to the care he has taken in rearing his pups as much as anything.

“I once heard (fellow breeder/trainer) Angela Langton make a very pertinent statement when she did a breeding seminar,” he said.

Toner stressed that training greyhounds involved plenty of challenges.

“I think some people think you just go to the racetrack and that’s all it (training greyhounds) is,” he said.

“Then when they try it they find out it’s not (that easy).

“You’ve got to think about what you’re doing, you’ve got to plan for what you’re doing and then there’s things that upset the planning that you’ve got to learn to cope with.”

Toner said that all the hard work and commitment people put into their greyhounds was appreciated by the dogs themselves.

“They’re much more affectionate than people give them credit for - even the dogs who are actually racing,” he said.

“They know who looks after them.

TalkWhen I first kicked off my career at Sky Channel (as it was known then) way, way back in 1996, the number of races we broadcast was minimal in comparison to what we cover today.

In those days, Sky Channel was purely a subscription based Television service for Pubs, Clubs and TABs and I initially hosted a programme called ‘The Late Mail’ which was broadcast from 6pm to 7pm

previewing the meetings of that night.

Although it seems hard to believe now given the volume of meetings we cover and the compressed racing schedule that we have, at that time, there was not a single race broadcast during that timeslot anywhere in Australia!

Last year, Sky Racing broadcast more than 110,000 races from Australia and overseas across the three racing codes, with greyhound racing being the major provider of those and is now responsible for more than 50,000 individual races being shown (and wagered on) each year.

As well as covering races from every state of Australia and New Zealand, in recent weeks, punters would no doubt have noticed that Sky Racing has commenced broadcasting greyhound meetings from the UK and early indications are that punters have a real appetite for greyhound racing more than 20,000km away.

Since the introduction of frozen semen, and the opportunity for that to be transported across the globe, Australian greyhounds have made a significant impact on the breeding and racing scene in the UK.

The champion, Rapid Journey, was a trail blazer when he was exported to the UK to physically stand at stud in 2000, and since that time, breeders in the ‘motherland’ can’t get enough of Australian sires to provide an outcross to their brood matrons.

As a matter of fact, the dominance of Australian sires in recent times has seen them come to the fore in producing the winners of the most prestigious race in England, the English Derby, five times in the last nine years.

Greyhounds such as Rio Quatro (x Ace Hi Rumble), Salad Dodger (x Crash), Bandicoot Topoki (x Crash), Kinda Ready (x Just The Best), and Loyal Honcho (x Top Honcho) have all benefited from the speed and strength that we know our sires inject into breeding lines by winning the English Derby, and we now have a number of UK-bred sons of Australian sires dominating.

For punters having a flutter on UK meetings, there are many noticeable differences between Australian and UK greyhound meetings including; the lure is on the outside of the track; rug colours are different; and there are only six runners in each race with greyhounds seeded in boxes according to their racing traits of being a railer, middle or wide runner.

TAB.com.au are now offering Fixed Odds betting on all greyhound meetings from the UK and while I’m still firmly of the opinion that greyhound racing (and our facilities) here in Australia are the best, it’s always interesting to see what happens on the other side of the world.

As the 2017 Victorian coursing season starts next month it’s a good opportunity to look at the history of coursing in the State.

Greyhound racing worldwide originated with coursing which originally involved

dogs chasing live game until the introduction of (synthetic) lures. Informal and private coursing events were organised in Victoria almost from the first days of European settlement. One of Australia’s first coursing clubs was the Victoria Coursing Club, which held the nation’s first public coursing event at Sunbury, in 1873. It was so well attended that a special train was chartered from Spencer Street Station to take the greyhounds and their owners and supporters to the track.

Public coursing events were soon being held all around Victoria, attracting large crowds that in at least one case included Ned Kelly. The highlight of the coursing season was, and still is, the Waterloo Cup modelled on the English event of the same name. In 1881, the plumpton coursing system was introduced in Victoria where greyhounds raced in an enclosed wire-netting track instead of an open field to reduce injuries.

The introduction of the mechanical hare and the abolition of privately owned tracks saw greyhound racing overtake coursing in popularity during the middle part of the last century but the sport persisted with its own dedicated participants and followers, many of whom were also involved in greyhound racing. Today there are eight coursing clubs across Victoria which provide a great introduction to greyhound racing at the grassroots level while offering the unique excitement of the world’s fastest dogs going one on one down a straight track.

Tell us a bit about yourself.I am 48 years old and I met my wife Laurette while I was working within the Victorian Police force and have been happily married for 15 years. During those years, Laurette and I have had three wonderful children, our daughter Morgan and sons Jonas and Noah.

Tragically in 2005 we lost our daughter Morgan to a very rare genetic condition, and following this I made the decision to pursue my passion of greyhound racing.

Laurette and I established a breeding, rearing and training facility on our farm at Tooradin. Over the years we have been associated with some champion greyhounds such as Hot Irish, Big Ticket and American Monster.

Tell us about your professional background.I left my role in the police force to take up the job of the Investigations Manager at Diners Club International. Diners Club was taken over by Citibank which transitioned me to the Investigations Manager of Citibank. I then resigned from Citibank to take up a role as the State Investigations Manager of the Health Insurance Commission.

My last executive role was as an Investigations Manager within the Environmental Protection Authority. However during this time, I maintained a connection to the greyhound industry and have been a registered trainer for 27 years.

What attracted you to the role of club manager at Traralgon? I found myself away from my home and family too often. The job at Traralgon affords me the luxury of working more family-friendly hours while remaining within an industry that I truly enjoy. I mean who gets to do that? I consider myself truly lucky to be in this position. The Traralgon club is also a new facility with great staff. It is a great working environment.

What are you most looking forward to about the role, and what do you think will be your biggest challenges?I think the dynamic within racetracks has changed greatly. I believe that clubs need to engage more with the local community not only on race day events but on non-race days. I think this community engagement is one of the biggest challenges faced by all clubs but it is one of the things which I look forward to the most. I also look forward to providing better service to local industry participants, trying to ensure that all who visit our facility, whether it be a trainer, staff member or member of the public have an enjoyable experience.

What would a typical day be for you on a race day?A typical race-day for the manager of Traralgon is made a lot easier thanks to the dedicated and experienced office and track staff. Because of their professionalism. I take on a more supervisory role, ensuring that track staff are supported and have the resources they need.

What are some of the most significant things in store for TGRC for 2017?I think it’s a great time for Traralgon and the industry in general, there have been challenges but there is a real feeling of

enthusiasm around the place. On the race track we have the Traralgon Cup coming up in March. GRV are supporting the club with several major infrastructure projects, all with a community engagement focus, a kid’s playground and shade sails for the trainer’s car park. We are also meeting with the local council to explore non-race day activities such as markets, a pop up cinema and making greater use of our fantastic function room.

What do you think is the most rewarding part of your role?I think the most rewarding part of my role is that I get to work with fantastic people, in a fantastic environment and have some influence with regards to industry direction.

What do you do with yourself outside of work?Outside of work, I am a typical laid back Aussie bloke, I enjoy spending time with my family and love all sports. I am a Carlton supporter, but don’t hold that against me.

After an involvement with the dogs since the early 1980s, former Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club (TGRC) manager Hector Caruana (pictured above) has retired.

Mr Caruana had a distinguished career with the greyhounds, including a 10-year term as the manager of Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club and more recently as manager of the TGRC.

In between this he also ran the Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association at Olympic Park and was a GRV board member for almost three years.

President of the TGRC Don Haley said Mr Caruana had a long and decorated career in greyhound racing.

“In his time at the club, Hec was instrumental in promoting the rebuild of the track and spectator facility and negotiating with Latrobe Council for a new 21-year lease,” Mr Haley said.

Mr Caruana said when he first started the job at TGRC a restructure was front of mind.

“The first thing I wanted to do was rebuild the place,” he said.

“It started around 2010, and it took three to four years to get it

all in place. I had the view that wherever you work and whatever you do, you need to try and make a difference.”

Mr Caruana said that without the rebuild the club would have struggled to survive.

He said it was a major career highlight to be part of the overall transformation.

“I said to myself if I don’t get this done then I’ve failed the system, but we tried and all of the cards fell into place.”

He said that in the scheme of things he was only part of the club at Traralgon for a small period of time.

“Historically a lot of volunteers have put their time in as well,” he said.

“I got the chance to make a difference and it happened.

In retirement, Mr Caruana said he would take the time to relax and do some work around the house.

Mr Caruana said he had seen plenty of changes over time, but believed greyhound racing was in a good position.

“It’s got clear direction and hopefully those plans and directions stay in place and that’s where we will head.”

TRARALGON GREYHOUND RACING CLUBClub Profile

The Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club (TGRC) has been an integral part of the Latrobe Valley community since 1973.

The TGRC directly employs 22 staff and supports local businesses and suppliers across the Gippsland region through the provision of goods and services to the club.

The TGRC, along with sister clubs Cranbourne, Sale and Warragul, contribute more than $40 million to the Gippsland economy each year, providing hundreds of local jobs.

The Glenview Park site has undergone a massive transformation in recent years with the Club shutting down in May 2014 for a $6 million rebuild of the greyhound track and new patron facilities.

The club re-opened its new track and facilities in August, 2015.

The rebuild delivered a new 175-seat air conditioned dining

pavilion with full bar and catering and views overlooking the track.

Local businesses which back the club include Simic’s Better Home Living, Jack Scott & Sons, Rutter’s Butchery & Poultry, Manny’s Market Morwell and R & A Precision Automotive.

The club also offers its facilities for functions to the local community.

The club engages with the local community with events such as the Girls Night Out, The Great Chase, the Traralgon Cup, which will be held on March 25 and local sponsorships.

Today, the club hosts two race meetings a week, involving about 200 greyhounds, competing over 315 metres, 395 metres, 525 metres, 595 metres and 665 metres.

More than 11,000 people attended race meetings at Traralgon last year.

2017 Launching Pad

Entry forms for the 2017 Group 2 Launching Pad are now for sale.

Now in its third year as a sweepstakes event, the 2017 Launching Pad carries $410,000 in prize money across three massive weeks of chasing.

The Launching Pad differs to normal greyhound racing events in that positions in the heats are sold to owners, trainers, syndicates, clubs and industry bodies. Nominations for the series is for greyhounds with 1-6 wins and no more than 30 career starts.

Launching Pad pocketing $150,000. The three-week series also features a consolation for greyhounds that don’t progress to the semi-finals, the winner of which picks up $15,000. In all, over half of the greyhounds competing in the series will earn prize money.

Nominations for the series close at 8am on Monday 27 March, heats will be run on Thursday 30 March, semi-finals on Thursday 6 April, and the final on Thursday 13 April.

George Farrugia’s dream of one day establishing himself as a topline greyhound breeder has not been diminished despite the vast changes made to the sport in recent times.

In fact, he is breeding more than ever from his suburban property in Essendon, where he oversees each labour before farming the pups out at a young age.

“Maybe I’m naive investing in breeding greyhounds, but while there are good races to be won and I’ve got brood matrons that I feel are of top quality I’m happy to keep going,” Farrugia said.

“I have bred five litters a year over the past two years, which is more than I have ever bred before”

“When the sport found itself at the crossroads two years ago I had to decide whether to stop breeding or not, but I was in a position where, probably for the first time, I felt like I had some fairly outstanding bloodlines to breed with, so I decided to continue.”

Farrugia, who performs media roles with RSN Racing & Sport and The Meadows, said the changing landscape of greyhound racing had forced him to become more scrupulous about which greyhounds he breeds with.

“I have a philosophy that if you breed with the best bloodlines you can get access to it won’t guarantee success, but the percentages will work in your favour,” he said.

“There are fewer people buying greyhounds in the current climate, which has forced me to become even more selective with the greyhounds I breed with. But from my experience people are still prepared to pay for top quality pups, and as such I’m fortunate that I’ve still been able to sell my pups.

“I’ve got a young family (pictured above) and a mortgage so as much as I’d like to keep every pup I breed, I can usually only afford to keep two pups from each litter and I have to sell the rest.

“I’m selective about who I sell my pups to. I need to be comfortable that every pup I breed is going to be given every chance of making it to the racetrack, not just for welfare reasons, but also because as a breeder your reputation is on the line.”

“From my experience people are still prepared to pay for top quality pups, and as such I’m fortunate that I’ve still been able to sell my pups.”

Quality Counts

Farrugia said GRV’s introduction of new breeding restrictions hadn’t been a major issue for him to date.

“I did have to apply to GRV to be able to breed with Witch’s Potion last year because it was her fourth litter, however the success of her previous matings justified why I wanted to breed with her and I was granted permission, so that wasn’t a problem. It was simply a matter of filling in a form on-line from GRV’s Care and Standards website,” he said.

Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, GRV made some changes in October to the GAP pre-entry assessment testing booking process, which is working very well:

• Spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are now booked through Member Services during office hours on 03 83291100 or by emailing [email protected]

• All sessions for March - May 2017 are listed on this page, with later dates released each month.

• To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must:

• have a current C5 vaccination; and

• not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. A new ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing.

• Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session.

• Participants must provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP.

Debbie Payne said her addiction to fostering greyhounds is ‘probably purely selfish’, but 96 greyhounds later, selfish could not be further from the truth.

About 13 years ago, Debbie and her husband Mike (pictured above with their pet Tom) were going to purchase an Irish Wolf Hound and the breeder told them he or she would need a mate.

With this in mind, the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) volunteers adopted their first greyhound, Barney, while they waited for the pup to be born, only to go down a different path altogether.

“We fell in love with Barney and cancelled the proposed purchase of the wolf hound,” Debbie said.

“Since then we have been fostering for around 13 years.”

Debbie said they’ve ‘failed to give four greyhounds back’ because they decided to keep them as their own.

“All 96 of them are my babies, even though I don’t own them,” she said.

At one point, Debbie said she had to make sure she picked up another greyhound on the same day she returned her current foster dog to ease the pain of having to give them back.

“I’d foster one for three weeks and I’d pick another one up as I dropped them back,” she said.

It would appear it does not get any easier to let them go, as Debbie admitted she even shed a few tears when she took her latest greyhound back a few weeks ago.

The greyhounds also forced her husband Mike to do a backflip.

“He wasn’t a dog person until we started with the greyhounds but now he’s a big softie,” she said.

Debbie said she decided to foster to help greyhounds find their second home.

“I felt that I really wanted to something to get those dogs out there, and make people aware of them,” she said.

“I get so much out of it, it’s probably purely selfish because it’s so wonderful for me to see them grow.”

Debbie encouraged anyone who has considered fostering to give it a go.

“They’re the easiest dogs to own and just the best pets. They’re great for anybody no matter what,” she said.

“You could get a greyhound for kids or for people with a disability, they’re so gentle.”

Debbie said she believed that greyhounds had come a long way and added that people now cross the road to come and give them a pat and see what they are like.

“They’re a wonderful breed and thoroughly enjoyable,” she said.

“They’re so adaptable, I feel like that’s the best way to describe them.”

There is no better time to Catch on to Coursing as Victoria’s 2017 coursing season is fast approaching.

The first two events on the 2017 coursing calendar are, in fact, Catch on to Coursing race meetings – at Lang Lang on Sunday, April 2 followed by Longwood on Sunday, April 9.

While there is no prize money on offer at the two Catch on to Coursing meetings, the concept was developed in 2016 to gradually introduce greyhounds to competing on a coursing straight. In essence, it gives trainers an insight into whether or not their greyhounds are suited to coursing.

Traditional coursing can see a greyhound course up to three times on a race day, where as a Catch on to Coursing meetings limit the greyhounds to a maximum of two courses, allowing for a gradual transition into the coursing season proper.

“We introduced the Catch on to Coursing initiative because we wanted to help trainers and greyhounds who haven’t coursed before. We found last year that it definitely helps with the transition into performing on multiple occasions rather than just once in a day,” National Coursing Association of Victoria President, Peter Craig explained.

“The Catch on to Coursing meetings are very relaxed and they are a great way for people to learn about coursing and their greyhounds’ potential to course without the pressure.”

More than $128,000 in prize money will be distributed throughout the 2017 coursing season, culminating with the holy grail of coursing - the Waterloo Cup - at Longwood on the weekend of August 26 & 27.

There are several differences between coursing and TAB racing. For instance, rather than exiting boxes, coursing involves a person slipping the greyhounds to commence a course. This is demonstrated in GRV Extra’s video ‘Longwood Coursing Club’. Coursing can also utilise either a drag or trolley lure system, depending on the coursing club. “Coursing is great for greyhounds who need a change of scene, such as dogs that don’t come out of the boxes quickly but have a lot of early pace. These types of dogs generally gain a lot of confidence during coursing because their reflexes don’t have to factor in coming out of the boxes,” Craig said.

“And there is also a lot less interference in coursing because there are only two greyhounds in each event.”

A high level of professionalism exists at coursing meetings, with the welfare of every greyhound paramount including routine vet checks and swabbing on course.

Coursing is renowned for encompassing a relaxed environment and a very personable type of racing for both trainers and greyhounds.

“You spend a lot of one-on-one time with your dogs throughout a coursing meeting and I have found that the greyhounds really thrive on all of the attention,” Craig said.

When evaluating whether your greyhound may be suitable for coursing, Craig said that a good coursing greyhound was able to recover well after a race.

“Recovery is such a crucial part of coursing and trainers have a responsibility to ensure their greyhounds are prepared to race on multiple occasions throughout a meeting.”

“A lot of people who have never coursed think you need a stayer to compete in coursing events; this isn’t true. If you had a stayer you would mostly likely be knocked out in the first round.”

“The only way to know if your greyhound can course is to try, as long as you have a fit greyhound they can course.”

Peter Craig's Tips for Successful First-Time Coursing

1) Trial your greyhound on a coursing track at least once prior to a meeting. Trial information can be found using the following link: www.ncavictoria.com/175312

2) Attend a Catch on to Coursing meeting to ensure your greyhound can handle two courses in the space of two hours.

3) Recovery is key; make sure your greyhound is warmed up before the event and cooled down afterwards to release lactic acid build up.

4) Provide plenty of water and electrolytes to replace energy lost in the run.

5) Provide a cool, safe resting place for your greyhound to recover between runs. For instance, park your greyhound trailer under a shady tree.

6) Ask for help if you are ever unsure.

EventsMain Event StakesMain Events are the feature Stakes on a Coursing program. Generally, they are Cup and/or Memorial Stakes. The greyhounds that are entered in these Stakes are generally experienced coursing greyhounds and can be males or females. These greyhounds will have usually won their Maiden (at coursing) and may have also won a One Win Stake or an All Aged Stake.

Maiden coursing greyhounds are also eligible to compete in a main event if the trainer believes the greyhound is capable – but must be nominated for the higher graded event, to be considered for selection. Greyhounds that have previously won a coursing stake will be given preference in selection for a main event over a greyhound that has not competed at coursing.

All Aged StakesThese are for the next level of open class greyhounds that may have previously won a coursing event. These greyhounds may also have competed over more than one coursing season.

Win Limit StakesThese are for greyhounds that have previously won the required number of coursing stakes, that is a one win stake is for greyhounds that have only won one coursing event.

MaidensA Maiden in Coursing is a greyhound that has not won three courses in a single event. A greyhound could be a city class greyhound and remain a Maiden at Coursing, until they have broken their Maiden status at Coursing.

PuppiesFor the 2017 Coursing season a Puppy is any greyhound (male or female) that is whelped on or after 01/03/2015. Depending on nominations, gender will separate greyhounds where possible, that is: Dog Puppy, Bitch Puppy and if nominations allow a Mixed Puppy Stake. There are Special Stakes conducted for Puppies only, with good prize money! The Sylvester Doyle Puppy Championship for both the boys and the girls, the Derby (for the boys) and the Oaks (for girls) are three of the National Coursing Association of Victoria Classic Stakes.

Waterloo CupThis is the final Coursing Classic event of the season and is considered the major prize carrying a long tradition which was first held in 1873. This event is open to all greyhounds with preference given to greyhounds that have previously coursed. Consolations of this event are also held for greyhounds defeated in the first round (Waterloo Plate), the second round (Waterloo Purse) and then if enough overall nominations are received, a consolation event for greyhounds defeated in the third round will be conducted.

Nomination Close TimesFor the 2017 Coursing season nominations will close on the Thursday prior to the date of the meeting at 8:30am, and may be extended should insufficient nominations be received. Nominations can be submitted online or by calling GRV Member Services Department on (03) 8329 1100. Fields will be declared no later than 3pm on the Thursday prior to the date of the meeting.

Selection For CoursingGreyhounds are eligible to compete at a Coursing meeting under similar rules to standard racing, in that the greyhound must be cleared to race, not be under any penalty, and its Owner and Trainer must be currently registered. The following additional conditions apply:

1. Trainers nominating for a Coursing meeting will each gain a minimum of one starter if nominations allow.

2. Trainers nominating multiple greyhounds should email the Grader advising of their order of preference for their greyhounds prior to nominations closing - [email protected]

3. Trainers with multiple greyhounds nominated, who have not provided preferences to the grader, will be subject to a ballot.

The number of Coursing events to be conducted will be determined from the total nominations received, with preference given to separating each pool of nominations by gender. Where the nominations require males and females to be merged to create an event, the youngest aged male greyhounds will be selected to compete against the oldest aged female greyhounds.

UpgradingFor the purposes of selecting greyhounds to compete in a higher-level event (eg. Cup), preference will be given to greyhounds that have been nominated for the event. If required, any other greyhound that has previous Coursing wins and Coursing prize money will be considered for elevation to a higher level event to provide a full field of eight runners.

PuppiesGreyhounds that are nominated for an event other than a Puppy Stake, may be included in a Puppy stake if they are whelped on or after the 1st of March 2015.

Consolation EventsIf a consolation event is to be conducted, greyhounds eliminated in the first or second rounds of an event will be automatically nominated for a consolation event if one is being conducted. The draw for these events will be conducted on course by the Steward in charge. Any Trainer not wishing to run in a consolation event must advise the Stewards prior to the draw being conducted.

Reserve AllocationOnce fields have been graded, the remaining greyhounds will be allocated as reserves. Reserve dogs for each event will be randomly drawn at the time of grading and will be published in order of preference. At close of scratchings, reserves will be allocated in order of preference from top down.

ScratchingsScratchings for a Coursing meeting will be finalised on the day prior to the meeting at 4:00pm. Trainers of any required reserves will be contacted by GRV. Should a late scratching occur (after 4:00pm on the day prior), a replacement greyhound will not be included in the field.

TRIAL INFORMATION

Bookings are essential for all trial sessions conducted at greyhound tracks in Victoria.

Bookings can be made in person, by phone or via FastTrack (except Cranbourne, Horsham and Warrnambool).

Pen trials conducted after race meetings are required to be booked on the day by no later than race 8 via phone.

Satisfactory Trials are conducted following race meetings. Trial sessions are subject to late change and weather conditions.
