Small Changes, Big Impact Poor Aunt Meg. You went to her house this week and found her again struggling to get up from her flowerbeds. "These old knees just aren't what they used to be," she said as she took your hand to get up. Aunt Meg loves gardening. You hate to think of her having to give it up someday. It's been such a huge part of her life. Relax. With some changes, your aunt may continue to garden long into her golden years. As people age, their bodies begin to deteriorate. The skin becomes more fragile, vision deteriorates and balance is compromised. Physical activities like gardening often become more difficult for seniors. Fortunately, adaptations can be made to alleviate some of the burden and make gardening easier. Garden spaces and equipment can be modified to reduce the physical stress of gardening. For seniors who have trouble getting up and down, gardens may be planted vertically on walls and trellises. Flower and garden beds may be raised and containers put on castors. Tools may be adapted with foam, tape and plastic or replaced with adaptive tools. Long-handled tools will allow seniors to complete tasks standing up, while lightweight-handled tools will allow seniors to keep their hands and wrists in a stress-free position. Add some bright tape to tools to make them easier to find when dropped and the senior will be set. For further convenience, seniors may take additional measures. They may have a drip feeder system installed for easy watering and replace their heavy wheelbarrow with a lighter version for easier hauling. They may also want to bring in some chairs that they can garden from for comfort. With a few changes, many seniors like your aunt Meg can continue to garden well into their golden years. They just need to be smart and make adjustments and bring in help as needed. Younger neighborhood chil-dren will often help with more difficult tasks like weed-ing for a few dollars, while friends and family are almost always willing to lend a helping hand!
