Welcome to Fettes Centre for Language & Culture (FCLC Edinburgh), a boutique English Language School at Fettes College, Edinburgh, Scotland. Established in 2006 and accredited by the British Council in our second year of operation, we aim to provide an exceptional programme for all our students.

We are a forward thinking, dynamic school with an open mind on development. Our programme is specifically designed to give students the maximum opportunity to learn, develop and practice English whilst in a fun, motivating and safe environment. The combination of lessons, activities, arts and crafts, sports, projects, excursions and workshops means that our students are never left to their own devices. Founded in 1870, Fettes College is the legacy of Sir William Fettes who, after the death of his son in 1815, devoted his wealth to building a school for children.

Fettes College, home of FCLC Edinburgh, is a unique and inspiring location, situated just one mile from the historic and cultural centre of Edinburgh and is a leading co-educational boarding and day school for children aged 7-18. Fettes College enjoys a reputation for excellent academic results, the highest level of pastoral care and a proud sporting tradition.

The college itself is a magnificent, magical neo-Gothic building set in 90 acres of private parkland and is only 20 minutes away from Edinburgh International Airport and 10 minutes from Waverley train station.

Within the expansive school grounds there is a wide range of excellent facilities including a drama theatre, music suite, art rooms, tennis and basketball courts, a large indoor multi-purpose sports hall and extensive playing fields for outdoor sports and activities.

Fettes Enterprises is a subsidiary company of Fettes College, which is comprised of Westwoods Health Club, Fettes the Venue, the School Shop and Fettes Centre for Language and Culture (FCLC Edinburgh).

In 2016 we are delighted to be able to use our brand new, purpose-built educational centre at the heart of the Fettes College campus. This facility offers 25 state of the art classrooms and we cannot wait to share this opportunity with you.

Our intensive summer programme for Young Learners is designed for children aged 10 to 13 while our Young Student programme is for those aged 14 to 17.

Lessons for all students take place in the mornings from Monday to Friday. Every students programme begins with a placement test and by the end of their first day of lessons, they will be in a class appropriate to their level. Our teachers will orally assess their students in class to ensure their level of spoken English is similar to their class level. We follow the CEFR classifications and accept students from A1 to C1 (we do not offer courses for absolute beginners or at C2 level). Our aim is to provide a positive learning environment where English is the medium of communication and we try very hard to mix the nationalities within classes.

Teachers follow a student-centred approach to teaching and learning English. Within the lessons all of the four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) will be covered as well as the three language systems of vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar. The students will practice their communicative skills using a task-based language teaching methodology within a variety of contexts. Throughout the week, the students will also be prepared for the cultural programmes off-campus excursions.

Homework is an important additional element allowing students to use the language they have worked with in class and for teachers to give constructive feedback. Students also keep a diary of their time in Scotland as a reminder of their stay.

All necessary materials are provided for use throughout the course and students will build up a portfolio of work in their folders to take away with them at the end of their course. All our classrooms have interactive whiteboards and there is access to computers and internet in all teaching buildings.

This was our third summer at FCLCand every time we walk into theschool we are warmly welcomed.The programme here is fantastic and made to suit every level ofstudent. It is an internationalcamp with many nationalities so students dont just study language and culture but also make friends from all over the world.

Our experience tells us that students are more likely to learn when motivated and enjoying what they are doing. That is why we offer such a wide and varied range of activities, excursions, projects and workshops within our fully-integrated programme.

In this environment it is amazing how much their language can develop and it is also wonderful to see how their confidence in using English grows every day.

We pride ourselves on being a listening organisation and take the thoughts and comments of our students, staff and clients very seriously. Collaborating with our students throughout their time here means that we are also learning on a daily basis how we can improve the programme that we offer.

Learning is, after all, a two-way process and so we are always listening, reviewing and developing our programme to keep us at the forefront of EFL teaching and learning.

On Saturdays and Sundays after a well deserved long lie and breakfast, our students will head off on an all day excursion.

There are so many wonderful things to see and do in and outwith Edinburgh that it is impossible for us to show you them all. Therefore, we choose the excursions based on our weekly themes, which form part of the academic programme. Examples include Edinburgh Castle, St Andrews (world famous

for its golf), Glasgow museum and shopping, Holyrood Palace (official royal residence in Scotland), Stirling (cradle of Scottish history Braveheart!) and East Lothian (Museum of Flight and picturesque Scottish landscapes).

As our excursions are planned in advance and our academic and cultural programmes are so highly linked, unfortunately it is not possible to change the planned excursions for individual groups.

2. What is our weekly theme? There is a campus theme for each week based on an aspect of Scottish history or culture which the academic, cultural and activity programmes are centred around. For example, one week it will be Science and Technology where some projects will feature scientific experiments such as water bottle rockets. There are prizes for the winning team!

3. Sharpen your pencils... After breakfast students go to class on campus where they will spend the morning learning and bonding with their teacher and new friends. There are three sessions, each with a different focus but are all connected in our integrated approach.

4. Were going off campus On two afternoons per week students will visit places of educational interest in Edinburgh with their class and teacher which will be linked to the theme of that week. Places may include, Edinburghs Botanical Gardens, Modern Art Museum, Scottish National Museum, Camera Obscura, Dean Village, Museum of Childhood and Edinburghs world famous Royal Mile.

5. Homework Time, aaaarrrrhhhh! Make new friends from other countries, attend classes, go on excursions and take part in activities every day. There are so many new and exciting things happening at FCLC. Students want to remember as much as they can and share it with their families. This is why the daily homework diary is so important as a way of recording their FCLC adventure.

6. Well done youve passed! After all the hard work has been done and the fun had, there is the farewell disco and party before going home but not before the Graduation ceremony in our beautiful chapel. An opportunity to cheer and congratulate everyone and get that all-important certificate as well as the chance to take some photographs with new friends.

7. Now that you are home Students also leave

with a report

from their teacher which reviews

their progress whilst they were

here and gives valuable advice

on ways that they can continue

to practice and improve their

language. Of course coming back

next year would be even better!

At FCLC Edinburgh we recognise the importance of students learning outside the classroom to continue to develop and improve their English language skills.Edinburgh is blessed with some of the worlds greatest tourist attractions and cultural experiences, some of which are only a few minutes from FCLC Edinburgh.

Each week, every class will visit a major Edinburgh attraction with their teacher. Preparation work for these trips includes research, class discussions and worksheets which form part of our academic curriculum.

We truly believe that the combination of learning within and outwith the classroom offers students an overall immersion in the English language.

The teacher will lead their students around the attractions highlighting points of interest along the way before setting the students educational tasks and communication exercises.

Students love the opportunity to learn and explore these carefully chosen attractions and present their findings to their fellow classmates the next day.

On Monday afternoons, students can choose from a variety of exciting team or group sports or activities which are all held right here on our campus at Fettes College.

On one afternoon, when students are not on an academic excursion with their

teacher, they will take part in an exciting project workshop of their choice with our team on or off campus.

On Friday afternoons, after the graduation ceremony, our students will have free time to go shopping or visit one of Edinburghs many attractions with their group leader.

In the evenings, students come together to relax and enjoy either a whole-school event or a house activity. Our carefully thought-out whole-school events are exciting and great fun for all, while our house events are more relaxed and allow students to unwind and get to know other students who they are living with. More importantly, both offer the opportunity to make friends!

Students can choose from a wide range of on-campus sports which may include football, tennis, basketball, badminton, table tennis, rounders, dodge ball, dance and frisbee football.

Traditional and modern boarding school environmentStudents stay in a mixture of traditional and modern boarding houses located within the grounds of Fettes College. Each house is comfortable, accommodating around 50 students plus staff who provide 24-hour supervision. Students stay in a mixture of single, twin, triple, quad and multi-bedded rooms. Bathroom, shower and toilet facilities are shared, on average the ratio is one to six. Each house has a common room for students to relax and socialise along with a computer suite. Free wi-fi is also available throughout the campus for students and group leaders.

Breakfast, lunch and dinnerMeals are served in the bright, spacious dining hall and are prepared by our own in-house chefs. A good choice of hot food, fresh fruit and salad is served every day. A packed lunch is provided for students and group leaders whilst on our exciting weekend excursions. We even offer evening snacks before bed.

Pastoral Care & Student SafetyLooking after the students in our care is our number one priority. By providing a carefully planned, well-organised and properly supervised programme we do our utmost to promote students safety and welfare at all times. Two dedicated Student Welfare Managers and residential staff are responsible for supervising students throughout the day, during all activities, excursions and at night in the boarding houses. Additionally, the General Manager has a 24-hour emergency contact number during the six-week summer school.

Graduation

The graduation ceremony is both a fun and interactive

experience for group leaders, our team and, of course, the

students. All students attend the graduation cermony even

if they are not leaving that week to show support for their

classmates and new friends. This is a great opportunity for

students to recap on the their stay and take photographs

that they can look back on in years to come.

I went to FCLC because I wanted

to improve my English speaking,

writing, communication and social

skills. I had never been to a summer

English school like this but as soon

as I got there, all my nervousness

was gone. Firstly, I met the staff

members and they were all really

kind and friendly and helped me a lot with my first day. Then I

met the students and they were all friendly too.

The days went on a little bit like this: You wake up early in the

morning and get ready for the day. Then you go to the dining hall

where you eat your breakfast. After breakfast, its time for lessons.

In my school in my home country the lessons are quite boring so

I wasnt too excited for the lessons on the first day I was at FCLC.

But the second day it was different - I actually woke up excited for

lessons. It was because the lessons were genuinely fun.

All in all, the whole thing was a really great experience for me, not

just because I improved my English skills but also because I made

so many new friends from all over the world.

at Fettes College, we

were deeply impressed

by the imposing main

building and its green

surrounding areas.

During our stay, our

students always felt

free to move around

the campus but safe

at the same time as

the staff kept friendly but vigilant eyes on them all the time. You

can easily perceive that the managerial staff work here all year

round as the level of pastoral care is very high. Another point that

we really appreciated was the programme integration between the

morning lessons and afternoon activities. We enjoyed our stay very

much and we are looking forward to returning.

GraduationOn successful completion of their language course, students

receive a certificate and progress report individually prepared

by their teacher. These are presented at the graduation

ceremony which takes place in the spectacular surroundings

of the Fettes College Chapel within the main school building.
