IntroductionArt and Design Studies: Summer 2012

Welcome to our summer programme for Art and Design Studies. For 22 years, the summer school held at Edinburgh College of Art has offered the opportunity to study and practice art and design in a spirit of exchange and cultural community. This year’s courses retain the ethos of intensive art and design practice and enquiry through studio and workshop disciplines. Our summer programme is delivered in one of the world’s most renowned art colleges which is now part of one of the UK’s largest ‘Russell Group’ universities with an international reputation for leading edge research, learning and teaching.

Many students enrol on our courses to take the first steps into serious creative endeavour, some to rekindle and revisit a lost passion, while more and more are thinking about new careers as artists, designers or within a creative industry. All our courses will give you insight and practical experience of professional practice and research to test and stretch your creative abilities and how you see the world around you. Previous students have variously described the experience as ‘challenging’, ‘exciting’, ‘exhausting’ and even ‘life changing’ and you should gain a real sense of personal fulfilment. Our 5 day courses will involve a leap of faith, risk taking and moving out of comfort zones, but our dedicated team of tutors, all practicing professional artists and designers, are there to support you and coax the best out of you – and enhance how you approach making art and design works well beyond the end of the course.

Once you have taken the plunge and enrolled on a course, why not start keeping a sketchbook to get you motivated and in the mood? Draw things you see, doodle ideas when you are on the phone or at meetings, research artists, designers and collect and take photographs and images that interest or intrigue you. These small beginnings might be developed and transformed into accomplished sculptures, prints, paintings, textile designs or pieces of jewellery on display at our end of week exhibitions.

You will find our courses more affordable than ever with many course fees reduced from those in 2011. More than half of the courses also offer you the option of studying for credit and having your work assessed at no extra cost. There is more information about this on page 2.

About Our Courses

Art and Design Studies summer courses are delivered in specialist studios and workshops at the Lauriston Place campus of Edinburgh College of Art. Class size ranges from 8 to 16 students. Each course will typically include practical exercises, introduction to techniques, processes and concepts, and set projects which lead to more focused and personal exploration. Teaching may include practical demonstrations, one to one tuition, group discussions and critiques. Your progress will be supported by your tutor who will agree a ‘directed study plan’ with you, both for work in the studio and, for those studying for credit, work to be undertaken beyond the class hours. All our courses are delivered at SCQF level 7 (entry level at University). However, the level within any group in a course might vary from beginner for some students, to intermediate or more advanced for others. Each course description includes a ‘pre-requisite’ section which tells you whether or not some experience (and what kind) is recommended in order for you to get the most out of the course.

Study for credit? The choice is yoursOur programme includes credit and non-credit bearing courses. However, you are not obliged to have your work assessed even if you are taking a credit-bearing course. At the start of your course you will be given an opportunity to

About our TutorsOur tutors create a strong group dynamic where a healthy spirit of exchange exists between students in a friendly atmosphere that is also hardworking, serious and with high levels of concentration. All are practising artists and experienced teachers who will provide you with support, encouragement and guidance.

Materials, Tools and EquipmentSome essential, specialist tools and equipment will be provided by the University and some, you will be asked to provide yourself. Your course information includes a list of what you need to bring with you along with an estimated cost. Your course tutor will discuss other relevant equipment and materials with you during your week.

Your Week of StudyArriving at eca on the first day of your course

Monday only, 9.00 – 9.30am (registration)All enrolled students, who have had their place confirmed, arrive at the main building where they will be directed to the registration session. Please arrive with all of the essential art materials and equipment listed for your course by 9.30am to the Main Building at ECA Lauriston Place.

Studio WorkingThe general studios will be open from 9.30am each day to give you time to set up and prepare and will also be open until 5.30pm each evening (except Fridays) to allow time to work on your own. Where courses are held in workshops which require technical supervision, an alternative studio will be available at these times.

Tea, Coffee and LunchThe newly refurbished ecaƒé will be open each day from 8.00am until 4.30pm for the sale of teas, coffees, cold drinks and hot and cold lunches. Students may also bring their own refreshments if they prefer.

Disruptive BehaviourThe University of Edinburgh reserves the right to suspend the attendance and refund the balance of fees of any student whose behaviour proves to be disruptive to the development of a constructive teaching and learning environment. Art & Design Studies Summer Courses 2012Throughout this brochure you will see that courses are described as ‘Portfolio Preparation’, ‘Foundation’ or ‘Intermediate’.

Portfolio Preparation courses are designed to support students who are interested in applying for a place on a degree programme at Edinburgh College of Art and are also appropriate for any students who wishes to undertake a general course focussing on either art or design.

Foundation courses are not credit bearing and are intended to enable you to acquire the basic skills you need to undertake further study in a range of art or design disciplines.

Intermediate courses are credit bearing and each course carries 10 credits. These courses range in nature from the first steps in a specific subject through to those requiring more developed skills. The pre-requisites described for each course will give you an idea of what kind of experience you may need in order to get the most out of a course.

{i} All Art and Design Studies Summer 2012 courses are ‘intensive’ courses and bear this symbol. This means that they are distinct versions of Art and Design Studies courses offered throughout the year.

Aspiring artists and designers need good sketchbooks to record visual ideas and thoughts for later development. An individual and original sketchbook collects research, helps to process images and demonstrates the imagination and creativity to study art and design at Art College. It provides a place to record ideas quickly, make drawings and notes, and discover over time where personal interests lie. In this course, students will collect images from both primary and secondary sources, using a mixture of location based observations, drawing, mixed media, collage and annotations and develop visual ideas beyond the sketchbook.

Portfolio Preparation: design {i} {ila}Tutor: Joanna Hill



Pre-requisites for enrolment: Suitable for students with some art or design experience who are interested in applying for degree study in design.

This course will provide practical support for students considering applying for degree courses in a ‘Design’ subject, such as fashion, graphic design, product design, illustration, jewellery or animation. Students will undertake a range of practical projects which will encourage using drawing and research to expand and develop personal ideas exploring a range of techniques and skills. The course will look at ways to integrate design practices, research and contextual awareness using a sketchbook and through a series of development works suitable for presentation for the online ‘mini-portfolio’ as well as preparation of a portfolio to take to interview. Advice will be given on strategies for recording and evidencing work digitally to reveal strengths and main interests. This course will provide practical support for students considering applying for degree courses in an ‘Art’ subject, such as drawing and painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography or intermedia. Students will undertake practical projects which will encourage using drawing and research to expand and develop personal ideas exploring a range of techniques and skills, which students would be encouraged to follow up in their own time.

The course will look at ways to integrate art practices, research and contextual awareness using a sketchbook and through a series of development works suitable for presentation for the online ‘mini-portfolio’ as well as preparation of a portfolio to take to interview. Pre-requisites for enrolment: No previous art or design experience required. Suitable for complete beginners or those with limited experience.

The main goal in this course is to build confidence for students with little experience in art and design. Students will be guided through approaches and processes with tutor demonstrations and ‘hands-on’ individual practice. Over the week, students will be given a range of introductory exercises working from still life, the life model and secondary sources covering the uses of drawing and painting materials and techniques ‘step-by-step’. The course is designed to engender skills which can unleash the imagination to enable students to make their own distinctive images.

Introduction to Screen Printing {i}FoundationTutor: Daisy Richardson



Pre-requisites for enrolment: Some previous drawing experience is desirable.

An enjoyable and accessible starting point to this popular printmaking technique, this course is for those who have never tried screen-printing. Working from their own source material, which may include sketchbooks, drawings or photographs, the student will learn how to create a set of prints which exploit the unique properties of screen-printing in a way that is individual to them.

Wood Sculpture {i}FoundationTutor: Arran Ross



Pre-requisites for enrolment: No previous sculpture experience required.

This course allows students to develop the basic skills of wood carving and some elements of construction and assemblage. During the first 2 days students will learn various techniques of carving with both hand tools and with basic power tools and establish a necessary level of basic skills. The course will consider both traditional and contemporary wood sculpture practice, basic cutting and joining techniques, treatment of wood surfaces, interior and exterior installation, wood colouring, relief and 3D carving techniques, the use and inclusion of found objects and materials, such as metal, plastics, driftwood etc. Thereafter the emphasis is very much on giving each individual student a chance to develop in a direction which is suitable for their own abilities and aspirations and also allows for the input/development of more personal and creative ideas.

Life Drawing with Anatomy {i} {ila}IntermediateTutor: Paul Mowat

Pre-requisites for enrolment: Some experience of figure drawing required.

This course enables students to explore the human form as an art practice in relation to the study of human anatomy. Students will have access to the life model as well as the eca historic collections of skeletons, anatomical casts and photographic slides and diagrams used over the last century to teach anatomy. Students will focus on the structure, form and movement of the human body using on-site work at Surgeons’ Hall to enhance the teaching and learning experience.

The course will provide a concentrated examination of the head, torso and hands exploring expressive drawing and mixed media approaches.

Working directly from models, the self-portrait and casts, students will undertake detailed study of the anatomy, proportion and character of the head and will be encouraged to develop a personal approach and expand their skills to produce dynamic and arresting head studies. Students will be introduced to a range of historical and contemporary artists whose work focuses on head study.

This course enables students to develop their own personal and expressive language negotiating the creative territory between representation and abstraction. In this course students will be encouraged to develop a visual language which encompasses a variety of materials in both two and three dimensions. Through the exploration of creative themes through observational drawing and experimentation with mark making and materials, students will create studies and images, which aspire to the development of a distinctive personal visual language. Students will be challenged on the boundaries between 2 and 3 dimensions to create a series of related and resolved artworks. The emphasis will be on individuality and innovation.

Relief Printmaking {i} {ila}IntermediateTutor: Susie Wilson

Pre-requisites for enrolment: No previous printmaking experience required. Some experience in drawing desirable.

This course introduces students to techniques such as woodcut, collagraph and other relief printing techniques to develop, design and print a series of richly textured works. The course will enable students to experiment with colour, texture and compositional design through the safe use of tools, presses and historical and contemporary techniques which consider context and content.

Pre-requisites for enrolment: Suitable both for those who are new to photography and those with previous experience of analogue or digital photography.

The course will explore digital camera creative controls, as well as digital image enhancements, adjustments and processing for photography. Students will be introduced to the elements of a photographic visual language and how concepts, ideas, and mood, can be communicated through photography. The course will include both a range of creative photography project work and computer-based work, using Photoshop. After introductory photography assignments, students will research, photograph, print, edit and present a personal digitally-based photography project. The course will also enable students to consider the work of a range of contemporary photographers, artists and designers working with photography.

Students are required to provide their own digital camera.

Life Drawing {i}FoundationTutor: Graham Flack




This course is designed to develop and extend student skills and approaches in drawing directly from the life model. Students will be given a range of strategies to develop their understanding of the structure and proportion of the human form, while also developing and considering the mood and character of the pose related to the uses of a range of materials and techniques.

Introduction to Analogue Photography {i}FoundationTutor: Caroline Douglas



Pre-requisites for enrolment: No previous photography experience required.

This course will introduce students to the basics of black and white photography using a 35mm analogue camera. Focusing mainly on technical processes in the dark room, students will be encouraged to consider aesthetic issues of composition, lighting and mood. Tuition will be one-to-one within the group, supported occasionally by illustrated talks and demonstrations as relevant.

Students are required to provide their own 35mm camera.

This course enables students to develop a personal approach to all aspects of portraiture through drawing and painting techniques. Working directly from models students will use a range of approaches to expand skills and techniques to produce dynamic and arresting portraits and head studies. A range of materials may be used incorporating drawing, oil-based and water-based media and students will consider the historical and contemporary context of the portrait in visual culture.

Plein Air Painting {i} {ila}IntermediateTutor: Catharine Davison

Pre-requisites for enrolment: Some previous painting experience is desirable.

This course enables students to make a series of studies and paintings made entirely from panoramic locations in and around Edinburgh. Students will learn a range of approaches to preparing grounds and painting surfaces, to plan and consider how they will record vast spaces within specific timeframes, and how to respond to the impact of the ever-changing elements. Through drawing and painting, with acrylics and/or oil paints, students will learn how to layer paint quickly to discover the light, mood and compositional framework of a particular viewpoint.

Pre-requisites for enrolment: No previous digital video experience necessary. Some experience in any art discipline will be useful.

This course introduces the moving image for students and artists interested in developing creative ideas with video. The focus will be on the fundamentals of the moving image and time-based media, together with digital video editing. The course covers developing concepts for moving image work using storyboarding, capturing and importing video, creating a rough-cut edit, fine-tuning the edit, working with effects and transitions, working with sound, and exporting a short video piece for DVD. Students will also have the opportunity to view and discuss a range of contemporary artists’ video and short films.

Students are required to provide a basic means of shooting digital video.

Pastels on a Large Scale {i}FoundationTutor: Callum Niven



Pre-requisites for enrolment: Basic drawing skills desirable.

Working from still life, models or visual research and sketchbooks, students will produce at least 5 large pastel drawings with a heavily-worked surface, concentrating on one very large drawing per day. Students will discover the possibilities of Conté pastels, oil pastels and oil bars. The emphasis throughout this course will be on patiently and gradually building up well-worked surfaces. Students will ‘layer’ and merge materials, employing effective mark-making techniques using erasers, sponges, and blades.

Painting: image and composition {i} {ila}IntermediateTutor: Olivia Irvine

This course provides the opportunity to extend students’ skills and visual vocabulary to make a series of paintings, which explore a more personal use of images and illusion using a range of traditional as well as experimental techniques. Visual ideas will be stimulated through a range of ‘point of reference’ observed set ups as well as exploring students’ own particular visual ideas and circumstances as subject matter. This may include working from still life, the figure, interiors, cityscapes, narratives. Students will develop personal research to explore compositional and pictorial devices, uses of tone and colour and the application of paint and mixed media.

Painting: landscape in the studio {i} {ila}IntermediateTutor: Paul Mowat

This course enables students to develop a series of exploratory and resolved landscape paintings from source material such as sketches, outdoors drawings, paintings and photographs in the studio environment. Students will be encouraged to find and develop their own interests using landscape as a subject in its own right and as a backdrop for other subjects. Students will examine landscape painting techniques and characteristics in works by other artists.

This course is intended to enable students to build on their personal drawing language and expression, gathering research material based on a specific theme, subject or idea. The course will allow students to develop a sustained and focused body of work through discussions with the tutor and carrying out work in their own time beyond the classes. Students will be encouraged to create drawings that engage in a dialogue with their work, questioning what drawing can be, challenging their own thoughts and approaches and pushing the boundaries of expression.

Intaglio Printmaking {i} {ila}IntermediateTutor: Daisy Richardson

Pre-requisites for enrolment: No previous experience in printmaking is required. A selection of previously completed artworks or visual ideas, reference and compositions is desirable.

This course will introduce and consolidate intaglio methods of printmaking to develop a series of ambitious and relevant images for print. Using and combining a range of direct intaglio techniques, multiple plate colour etching, photo etching and chine collé, students will develop their own coherent themes and learn about editioning and presentation of a portfolio suite of artists’ prints.

Introduction to Artists’ Books {i} {ila}IntermediateTutor: Jane Hyslop

Pre-requisites for enrolment: No previous experience of making artists’ books required. A selection of previously completed artworks or visual ideas, reference and compositions is desirable.

This course will introduce students to the diverse ways artists use the book as a form by considering work from William Blake and Matisse through to Ed Ruscha and on to more contemporary artists such as Tom Philips and Damien Hirst. Practical demonstrations will be given. Students will make books using a range of binding techniques, explore the qualities of paper and other materials, then progress to a more resolved personal project. Students may construct blank books or incorporate photographs, drawings, paintings made previously or use a selection ‘found’ materials.

Students will learn a range of basic binding techniques such as pamphlet sewing, Japanese binding, hardbound books, concertina folds and will make sample books. Students will be encouraged to make at least one finished piece to demonstrate their individual choices and visual aesthetic.

Developing Analogue Photography {i} IntermediateTutor: Caroline Douglas

Pre-requisites for enrolment: Suitable both for those with little experience in photography and those with more experience of analogue photography.

Intended for students with some existing experience and knowledge in taking, developing and printing photographs, this course aims to consolidate existing skills and develop new ones. The structure of the course is based around the interests of individual participants but also follows a clear programme. By the end of the course students will have completed projects designed to broaden their interest and skills in photography.

Students are required to provide their own 35mm camera.

Clay Figure Modelling {i} {ila}IntermediateTutor: Kevin Dagg

Pre-requisites for enrolment: No previous experience of clay sculpture required. Basic drawing skills desirable.

In this course, students will be encouraged to explore the technical and expressive potential of this ancient medium in a contemporary context investigating the concept, design and tactile and malleable qualities of clay. Working directly from the life model, students will make a series of modelled heads, torsos and figures. Students will be required to keep a sketchbook and journal documenting progress and relating the work to artists who have used the figure as a sculptural form.

Pre-requisites for enrolment: No previous experience in Photoshop required. Some basic computer experience desirable.

Adobe Photoshop, established as the industry standard image manipulation software, has an immense range of applications right across the visual arts. This course provides the basic skills needed to exploit the potential of this technology. The course will offer both group work and individual tuition. Through an introduction to work by a range of artists and designers, students will be encouraged to explore the versatility of Photoshop as a creative application.

This course introduces students to the basic skills of working with stained glass including cutting, leading, soldering, fusing and painting on glass with enamels. In this course, students will experiment with non-traditional tools and materials such as beads, fabrics and found objects to deploy new techniques such as assemblage and construction to design pieces of jewellery. This course will introduce the uses of basic feltmaking, laminating plastic bags and incorporating textiles and found objects to make a series of tests and samples leading to more independent and personal developed pieces supported by research and contextual awareness.

The course will explore the creative language of textiles and stitch focussing on the use of a wide range of traditional and experimental textile techniques. Students will experiment with hand and machine stitch, fabric manipulation, bonding and fusing with a range of fabrics, paper and plastic. Students will be encouraged to push the boundaries of textile and fibres techniques, producing a range of samples before working on a personal project reflecting their own interests.

Pre-requisites for enrolment: No previous jewellery experience required.

In this introductory course students will be taught basic jewellery making techniques to enable them to create a unique piece of jewellery of their own design. Students will use various construction methods and be introduced to a variety of materials, such as copper, brass and silver. During this week students will gain experience of saw-piercing, texturing, roll-printing and soldering sheet metal and apply these techniques to make a finished piece of jewellery.

This course offers students who have knowledge of stained glass the chance to explore more advanced techniques and develop an individual approach to working with the medium. Students will begin by visiting locations around Edinburgh to research creative uses of glass in architecture, design and art, examining techniques, trends and impact to inform ideas for creating work for specific locations.

This course develops skills in working with and designing stained glass including cutting, leading, soldering and painting on glass with enamels. Attention will be paid to how technical skills and an awareness and understanding of the use of light can inform the development of related ideas to make a series of samples and finished works. Students will be encouraged to develop increasingly innovative and experimental approaches to the medium supported by research and development of visual ideas.

This course will introduce students to direct and indirect methods of laying mosaics. Students will gain a good grounding in basic mosaic making techniques.

This course introduces students to the visual interpretation of themes and texts through drawing and mixed media. During the course students will have the opportunity to explore narrative illustration and, based on literary sources, investigate how to tell a story through images. Students will be taken through a series of illustration briefs which explore the planning and development stages of illustration as well as the context. This will lead to the students’ own visual interpretation to a given or chosen text to create a more ambitious outcome.

This course will allow students to explore different and innovative ways of using wire as a medium for making jewellery. Students will learn basic wire techniques including making jump rings, annealing and soldering wire, texturing and drawing wire into different gauges and sections. Students will consider the design process by creating forms which could include the use of soldering, twisting wire, shaping and making simple chains. The outcome will use selected wire techniques to create a piece or pieces of jewellery.

This course introduces students to the basic technical skills necessary to design and print furnishing or fashion fabric. Using a contemporary colour palette, students will become familiar with various screen-printing techniques and consider the creative process from initial research and drawings through to a printed fabric. Students will prepare a screen and expose a selection of their own patterns and images onto it.

Pre-requisites for enrolment: No previous animation experience required.

From the Lumière Brothers to Tim Burton, Stop Motion animation has as long a history as cinema itself and continues to thrive in the digital age. In this course, students will learn how to manipulate wire-frame armatures, make effective use of lighting and discover the principles of timing and weight. Working in teams of two, students will be introduced to and develop basic and traditional techniques, creating a collaborative short animated sequence which will be recorded as a DVD or a video file.

This course is designed for students who wish to create an ambitious personal illustration project. Students can adapt a written a story or series of poems to develop these into an involved illustration project or a non-narrative series of images and ideas which can be visualized further into a series or a book. This course will provide the support for students to discuss and test out ideas using a range of traditional and non-traditional techniques, methods and concepts.

This course introduces basic jewellery techniques to enable students to explore the use of precious metals and traditional uses of sand casting techniques. Focusing on small-scale castings, students will create unique contemporary items using individually hand-made two part moulds which can incorporate found objects. The designs will be cast using sterling silver.

Fees and How to EnrolFeesThe fee published for each course covers professional tuition, the use of studios and workshops, access to University libraries, certain lectures and talks related to aspects of professional practice, as well as the end of week exhibition and reception. The course fees reflect the costs of running a dynamic and supportive teaching and learning experience within highly specialised art and design disciplines.

You can enrol and pay course fees online, by post or in person. Please note we do not take enrolments or payment over the phone. ILA funds can only be used for specified courses and your account must be active at the time you enrol. ILA will write to you to confirm this (for more details on ILA go to page 33). Please note you cannot enrol for a course at ECA in Lauriston Place.
