*******UPCOMING CHANGES*******

NEW WORSHIP TIMES

On May 11, the Church Council approved the joint recommendation of the Worship and Education Committees for summer worship times. Our hope is that over the summer these unified services will promote unity in our congregation and encourage more to be able to attend worship before continuing the day with their summer activities. In addition, after several months of discussion, deliberation and discernment, the Church Council approved the joint recommendation of the Worship and Education Committees for a new fall schedule effective September 11, 2016. The new schedule will allow for time to move between worship and Sunday School and reduce the need for folks to leave worship and/or Sunday School early to meet their obligations. We hope this will enhance both worship and Sunday School. In addition, we will be having a long Fellowship Time each 5th Sunday to build relationships and connections between those in different Sunday School classes and worship services. Your prayerful support is appreciated and we’ll continue to evaluate these changes and make adjustments as needed.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL This year at Vacation Bible School, children will discover that God Creates, God Helps, God Loves, God Calms and God Sends. AMAZING! This fun and interactive Bible-based program will help children discover how to surf through life with God and others! The adventure includes music that will energize your ears, interactive Bible fun, super science projects, cool crafts, delicious snacks, great games and more. The dates of VBS are June 20th - June 24th from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. We will conclude on Friday with a closing program and pizza lunch. Registration forms are enclosed in the Pine Needle, in the church office or can be found on the website: www.pinestreetumc.org. Please invite your neighbors, friends and family members ages 3 through Grade 5. Pre-registration is helpful but not necessary.

VBS DECORATION ITEMS NEEDED The following items are needed for VBS decorations: child-size beach chairs, swim rings (tubes) and boogie boards. If you would be willing to share any of these items with us, please bring them to the church no later than Sunday, June 19. Be sure your name is marked on each item. Items may be placed in the Deep Blue room or the K-1st grade Sunday School room. Items may be picked up after June 24th. THANKS

VBS CLOSING PROGRAM All members of the congregation are invited to attend the pizza lunch and closing program for VBS. Our program will begin at 12:00 on Friday, June 24th in Wesley Hall followed by lunch in Fellowship Hall. Please let the office know if you plan on staying for lunch.

BELIEVERS SHARE On Sunday, April 24, the lesson for Deep Blue Sunday School classes was Believers Share. The Deep Blue Choir shared their music with both services. Mrs. Cook’s 4th, 5th & 6th grade class shared refreshments and hospitality with the Seeker’s class. They gave out ‘Random Acts of Sharing’ cards and challenged them to share in the coming week. Mrs. Cook got Munchkins (donut holes) for the class as her Random Act of Sharing but……she forgot the munchkins and left them in the car with Harley, the 11 year yellow Lab. When Mr. Cook returned to the car……you guessed it….Harley ate the whole box of munchkins! When the class began they found an empty box on the table with an explanation. What started as a Random Act of Sharing for the Sunday school class ended as a Random Act of Sharing for Harley! A special thank you to Wilma for making the cards. If you would like to do a Random Act of Sharing, just ask Wilma for a card. No more munchkins for Harley!

SECOND AND THIRD GRADE SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS HAPPENINGS We have a prayer wall in our room. We make a list each week for the Children and teachers to pray throughout the week. We list prayers for our church family. Our family & friends in our lives. We pray for all the children in school each week. We pray for all the animals. We pray for our college students, especially during finals week. We pray for safe travel. The children are great at sharing blessings & joys in their lives on our prayer wall. Stop by our room and look sometime. We love to read the lesson each week. We have great readers in our room. We talk about how the lesson applies to their lives. Encouraging the children to spread God’s word throughout the week to all their friends & family. They are great at encouraging! They all make me humble & bless my life. Most important for us all to remember! Each child born in this world is a gift from God. We as a Church family are blessed with amazing children in this world.

SPECIAL OFFERING FOR JUNE

In our envelope packet for this quarter is an envelope for PEACE WITH JUSTICE SUNDAY. What does this mean? This is a denomination-wide offering that supports ministries in the United States and around the world that focus on overcoming violence, human rights, social and economic justice, interreligious dialogue, ecumenical training, ecological justice, and HIV/AIDS. Your offering will be sent through our conference treasurer to fund United Methodist efforts to encourage the gospel of peace.

DO YOU KNOW HOW OUR MONEY IS USED? We look around our beautiful building that was new only a short time ago, actually 35 years ago, and we must realize that just like home, things need to be repaired and updated. Some are minor and some quite major. Our Trustees are responsible for the care and maintenance of our church building, property, and parsonage. You will notice that we have recently repaired the front sidewalks, and volunteers replaced heaved bricks around the trees with small stones like the ones in the parking lot. We have done similar work with parsonage sidewalks. This is required by the city and the township, all in the interest of safety of the public using our walks. This project cost just under $5,000. The Trustees are diligent in seeking bids and doing their best to be good stewards of our funds and our property.

FOUNDATION AND FINANCE UPDATES At the May Council meeting our first Foundation grants for 2016 were approved. They are $500 for West End Community Center toward a request for $1500 for a kitchenette in their community room (this completes their total request); $1,000 for Sojourner Truth Ministries who requested $2,000.; and $1,000 for Scott Koser, our ministerial son for his seminary expenses. We can make grants only as our investment income is received so this was our limit at this time. We have been blessed with generous gifts from some members, and we were able to grant Scott Koser an additional $1,000 from Ken and Helen Sterrett’s gift for special education projects. Our Lenten Offering was to be divided between our budget and West End Community Center. Because of your generosity we were able to send over $1,100 for this mission outreach.

SOCIAL SERVICE MINISTRY Thank you, thank you… thank you to all who have donated to this ministry. We have averaged $400 a month for January through April. We have helped 217 adults and 53 children with $5563. You have helped keep electric, water and gas turned on for these needy clients in our immediate community. We have also provided transportation, food, work clothes and boots, a bike, helped a family move from Family Promise into their own apartment, minor eye surgery and more. These families also receive counselling, prayers, budgeting help and common sense advice. Continuing assistance for these families is based upon their progress and information from the interview process. Thank you again from all of our team members and clients. We could use two more volunteers to serve as substitutes and/or team members. You would observe a team in action and be trained before you serve. Al Cook, Social Services Ministry chair.

“Giving is not just about making a donation. It’s about making a difference. -Kathy Calvin, CEO and President of United Nations Foundation
