NEWS of the PEWS GOES ELECTRONIC By Joy Hutchins In her last edition as editor of News of the Pews, Ruthie Stalker told of how forty years ago she typed each edition of the newsletter. Anyone who has used a typewriter, whether manual or electric, knows how difficult and cumbersome this task must have been. Ruthie then moved into the age of computers and keyboarding. Whiteout was replaced with a delete key, and start-over’s with a “cut and paste” option. Recent editions were linked to the PCBC website. With this current edition, News of the Pews is making another transition. Electronic copy is being sent to members and friends whose e-mail addresses are known. CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS SUPPER By Loretta Weitzel

The Plainfield Community Church Christmas Traditions Supper was held on December 12, 2016 at the Plainfield Fire House. We served dinner to over sixty neighbors and friends in our community. We enjoyed turkey with cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, ham with raisin sauce, squash, meat pies and lasagna. We had scrumptious homemade pies for dessert! All the food was generously donated. We especially enjoyed Hubbard squash donated by

Edgewater Farm and Eggnog donated by McNamara Farm. Our Church suppers continue to be a very important part of our community outreach. We packaged and donated the leftovers to families in Plainfield, through Stephanie Schell, Community Resource Director. Please save the date of April 8, 2017 for PCBC’s Ham and Bean Supper to be held in Pierce Hall. Millie and Henry Ingham are chairing this wonderful evening. We hope you will join us.

MID-WINTER WOMEN’S MINISTRIES GATHERING On Saturday February 4th the American Baptist Women’s Ministries is sponsoring a mid-winter gathering at Trinity Church in West Lebanon. Registration begins at 9:00 am and the program with its focus on “prayer” runs from 9:30am to 3:00pm. Attendees should bring a bag lunch. Beverage will be supplied. “Prayer - No Ocean can hold it back. No river can overtake it. No whirlwind can go faster. No army can defeat it. No law can stop it. No distance can slow it. ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR MONDAY QUILTERS By Betty Ann Heisted

The Monday Quilters gathered at Annamay's home on Wednesday December 7th. Over the last year Annamay [Chapman] has been gathering finished quilts at her house filling closets and more! Folks including Bev Morse and Deb Ryan, both active long time members of this dedicated quilt group, unfolded piles of quilts and each one was laid out on the couch and individually photographed. Lots of "Oh I remember that one" and joy at seeing them. After tea and cookies, the quilts were loaded into Deb's car taking up the whole backspace and taken to Turning Points and Claremont Soup Kitchen. 40 adults and 42 children will surely feel the love and caring and feel nice and warm this winter. Special thanks goes to Annamay.

HISTORICAL HOLIDAY TRIVIA

Three martyrs are recognized as “Saint Valentine.” Their “love” is celebrated on February 14. One was a priest at Rome; one was a bishop of Interamna (modern-day Terni); one suffered with others in Africa. This became the basis for our present day secular celebration. (Source: Thurston, Herbert. "St. Valentine." The Catholic Encyclopedia. Vol. 15. New York: Robert Appleton Company, 1912.) February 28th is “Mardi Gras.” In Christianity Mardi Gras (French for "Fat Tuesday") is celebrated on the last day before the beginning of Lent (the period of fasting and repentance between Ash Wednesday and Easter). Traditionally, rich foods such as eggs, meat, oils and butter were strictly prohibited during the 40 days of Lent. It thus became customary to have a feast on the day before the 40-day fast in order to empty the house of any of these foods. (Source: http://www.religionfacts.com/mardi-gras)

WILL YOU BE MY VALENTINE? By Joy Hutchins (with input from Doris Mercier)

Carefully cut out construction paper hearts adorned with white lace doilies and my best handwriting were carefully placed in my lunch box so as not to fold them. A valentine was waiting for each of my classmates. I knew there would be just as many coming home with me. The joys of childhood Valentine’s Day friendship and card swap seem so far away. Thanks to Doris Mercier’s creative thinking I will be able to once again share in the valentine tradition. This time I will be basting turkey instead of cutting paper hearts. I understand that Millie Ingham is bringing ham! Hopefully you will join in the Valentine potluck meal on Saturday February 11th at 5:00 pm in Pierce Fellowship Hall. Bring some yummy food to share and a cordial attitude for an evening of fellowship... and don’t be surprised if I ask, “will you be my valentine?” Any questions?????????? Ask Doris 675-5436

OUT OF LOVE From Hickory Grove Service Bulletin in Auburn, Nebraska – original source unknown

When people came to be baptized by John in the Jordan River, they did it because they knew their lives and actions had fallen short of God’s commandments, so they came to have their sins forgiven by John through a traditional Jewish custom of ritual washing. It was “a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins” (Luke 3:3). So when Jesus shows up at the river to be baptized, John is understandably surprised. Jesus has not committed any sin, so John refuses to baptize him. But Jesus insists. Jesus gets baptized not because he has to, but because he wants to show us that his life is not separated from ours. He does it out of love. For the same reason, Jesus goes to eat and live with those regarded as public sinners: prostitutes, tax collectors, and criminals. For the same reason, Jesus touches lepers and those considered by society as unclean. For the same reason, Jesus submits to crucifixion. He does it not because he has to, but out of love. This pattern of voluntary humility and solidarity is the pattern for our life as well. We share in his baptism, in his love, and in his cross. When we gather together in worship, it is not because we have to, but out of love for God and for each other. When we serve our neighbors in volunteering, when we share in the pain of others, when we open our resources and lives to strangers in need, we do all of this not because we have to, but out of love. In Jesus we embrace a faith that is free: Our sins are already forgiven; there is nothing left to prove; there is nothing left to lose; there is a whole world to gain … out of love.

CAMP SENTINEL SUMMER 2017 Submitted by Kevin Van Brunt

Register online at www.campsentinel.org Weeks are filling up. This 68th summer season we will explore the All-Surpassing POWER of God and what it looks like to store up this POWER in humble earthenware jars of clay. Each day we will unpack a different aspect of how we are to live for God by standing for TRUTH, shining light out of darkness, storing up this treasure in jars of clay, and His life at work within us. “We have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” 2 Corinthians 4:7 For over 60 years our camp has provided a safe, fun, Christian summer camp experience. Daily activities include: swimming, boating, arts & crafts, teambuilding games, ropes course with zip line, rock wall, archery, hiking, large group team sports, and many other great adventures. Each evening

FROM MY MIND’S EYE – Thoughts from Joy Hutchins, News of the Pews Editor

Ruthie Stalker has done a wonderful job serving as editor for News of the Pews for the past forty years. She has helped transition me to this responsibility by forwarding templates, databases, and thoughts about how she had done things. Though many things about News of the Pews will remain the same, I am sure that there will be changes as it evolves under a new editor. Some changes may go unnoticed. Some noticed changes might be liked; others may be met with resistance. This got me thinking about how we handle change. Why is it that some changes seem to be no big deal while others seem almost overwhelming? Is there a “coping with change” gene in our DNA that researchers have yet to find? Does change mean we might need to bring the vulnerability of our weaknesses to the surface as scary as that might feel? We have lots of change going on at PCBC right now. I hope you ponder these questions during the month – and be reminded that with God ALL things (even change) are possible.
